Everton FC's 1909 tour of South America: a compilation of loose pages from a photograph album, pages bearing the stamp of Edward Roberts believed to be the photographer, a total of seventeen photographic images, subjects comprising i) Everton Directors Messrs Bainbridge (chairman) and Wade (known as "Bang Bang") on board the ship "Asturias"; ii) palm tree on the Buenos Aires Football Ground El Palermo; iii) Fred's Argentina Signoretta; iv) children's race on the "Asturias" v) two footballers 'spar boxing' (2nd round), vi) the final of the spar boxing, Argentina De Marki beating Everton's legendary captain Jack Taylor; vii) Naked divers throw small boy penny; viii) "The Miracle" Estansia shoot near Abbott, Buenos Aires; ix & x) two: Open bird's nest in tree, Brown Argentina centre-forward on right; xi-xiv) a group of four relating to the catching and breaking of a wild horse; xv) the Everton team, passengers of the Araguaya, pictured in a stop over in Lisbon; xvi) further picture of Fred's signoretta; xvii) Home sweet home on the Araguaya, picture of Wade sleeping in a deck chair; sold together with an album by the same photographer Edward Roberts with further travel images but unrelated to Everton FC. Almost precisely 100 years ago in June 1909, Everton, together with Tottenham Hotspur, became the first English professional clubs to travel and play matches in South America, visiting the then fledgling football nations of Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. The two English clubs played each other twice, the first match ending in a 2-2 draw, the second in a 4-0 win by Everton. Everton were undefeated on the tour, and seemingly in their honour a Chilean football club based in Vina del Mar changed its name to Corporacion Deportiva Everton as a result of the tour. The two teams have kept a close association and a delegation from Chile recently attended a dinner at Goodison Park in this centenary year. These photographs are a remarkable discovery and an invaluable and rare documentary of this historic football tour.
