1870 4d Vermilion plate 12 (SG 94), very fine used cancelled by a Salisbury "683/E" punching obliterator without pins. Usually bearing four dots in the center section made by perforating pins however these pins needed constant attention to keep them sharp, more often than not the pins did not achieve their desired affect of punching a hole through the adhesive or worked too well and punched through the stamp, envelope and contents within. Although the trials had been deemed a failure the obliterator was retained and used without the four central pins. A scarce & attractive trial cancellation

Al frontespizio la nota di mano coeva 'Dono del Sig. S. M.', e il timbro 'Fabroni', ripetuto anche al recto della carta A2. Quattro edizioni che ben documentano il fiorire degli studi agronomici nella Firenze del Settecento, e pubblicati da alcuni membri della celebre Accademia dei Georgofili. Di particolare interesse la rara prima edizione del trattato Della Robbia di Giovanni Mariti (1736-1806), che durante un suo viaggio a Cipro aveva avuto modo di studiare la pianta della rubbia, ricca di pigmento rosso, introducendone poi la coltivazione in Toscana. L'opera è dedicata da Mariti al Granduca Pietro Leopoldo, che è dedicatario di un'altra opera offerta in questo lotto, la memoria Metodo sicuro per distruggere i succiameli di Giovanni Lapi. I. Esemplare in buono stato di conservazione, alcuni fascicoli uniformemente bruniti. Aloni e gore marginali, più evidenti al frontespizio e alle ultime carte. Forellino al margine superiore bianco, senza alcuna perdita di testo. Piccolissimo foro di tarlo ai fascicoli L-O, a ledere leggermente un'unica lettera di testo. Legatura moderna in mezza pergamena, piatti in carta decorata. Dorso liscio, con titolo e data di stampa impressi longitudinalmente in nero. Al frontespizio e al verso della carta O3 antico timbro in rosso della 'Libreria Colonna'. Edizione di grande rarità stampata a Digione di questa opera dell'antiquario francese Claude Saumaise (1588-1653), professore all'Università di Leida, e apparsa originariamente nel 1629. Il volume comprende un compendio dei nomi greci di piante, con notizie sul loro uso medicinale, e un interessante saggio su Plinio il Vecchio. Manca a Krivatsy e Wellcome. Large 8° (240x165 mm). [8], 110, [2] pages. Complete with the last blank leaf. Title-page in red and black, with woodcut vignette likewise in red and black. Woodcut decorated initials, head- and tail-pieces. Copy in good conditions, some quires uniformly browned. Marginal spots and waterstains, more prominent to title-page and last leaves. Small hole to the blank upper margin, without any loss; very tiny wormhole to the quires L-O, slightly affecting an unique letter. Moderm half-vellum, smooth spine with title and date of publication stamped in black. Early red stamp 'Libreria Colonna' on the title-page and on the verso of fol. O3. Very rare edition issued in Dijon of these two essays by the French scholar and antiquarian Claude Saumaise (1588-1653), professor at the University of Leide, and first appeared in 1629. The volume contains a philological study on Greek plant names, supplemented with detailed information on their medicinal use, and an interesting essay on Pliny the Elder. Not in Krivatsy, and Wellcome.

Due illustrazioni a piena pagina incise su legno, impresse alle carte G6v e L2v. Esemplare in ottimo stato di conservazione, lievi fioriture. Cartonato settecentesco, abrasioni al piatto anteriore, distaccamento della carta al dorso. Al frontespizio nota di possesso manoscritta 'Chisola', al recto della carta di guardia anteriore timbro 'Nob. Silvio Ghidini Ottonelli di Gadignano', da riferirsi al colonnello di cavalleria Silvio Pecino Ghidini Ottonelli, nato a Pavia l'11 ottobre 1900. Seconda edizione in seconda emissione del primo trattato a stampa di equitazione, tipograficamente identica all'emissione con la data di stampa 1551 al frontespizio. L'opera, redatta dal fondatore della scuola napoletana di equitazione Federico Grisone, pose le basi della moderna equitazione al maneggio e all'esterno ed ebbe grande diffusione: solo nel Cinquecento venne ristampata ben diciotto volte dalla sua prima edizione, licenziata a Napoli nel 1550. Second edition, second issue of the first printed book on horsemanship, typographically equal to the one with printing date 1551 on the title-page. The work was written by the founder of the Neapolitan riding school Federico Grisone, and it laid the foundation for the modern horsemanship. The first edition was printed in Naples in 1550, and it was reprinted eighteen times during the Sixteenth Century.

First edition of this encyclopedic work divided into two parts: the first one includes Buffon's Natural history of the horse, while the second part includes La Guerinière's School of horsemanship followed by two treatises by Giovanni Pozzi about horsemanship for women and hippiatrics, conceived as supplementary to La Guarinière's work. The second volume is composed of 77 plates: 34 hand-coloured softground etchings, 34 plates of softground etchings (not coloured but many with aquatint shading), 1 plate of a hand-colored etching, 8 plates of etchings (not coloured). The plares were engraved by the editor of the work Antonio Locatelli and by Gallo Gallina after Pelagio Pelagi and Carle Vernet.

An interesting work showing the different horse brands of the noble Italian families, exhibited during the fair of Rovigo, established in 1482 by the Republic of Venice. The second bound work is a Venetian edition of the veterinary treatise by Pietro Francesco Canavese, stable master for the Count Giuseppe Maria Arconati, and first printed in Milan in 1698. The volume opens with a rare edition of the Italian poet and librettist Paolo Antonio Rolli's poems, first printed in London in 1717.
