PEDRO, D. (Conde de Barcelos).- NOBILIARIO | DE D. PEDRO | CONDE DE BARCELOS | HIJO DEL REY D. DIONIS | DE PORTVGAL. | ORDENADO Y ILVSTRADO | COM NOTAS Y INDICES | POR IVAN BAVTISTA LAVAÑA | CORONISTA MAYOR DEL REINO | DE PORTVGAL.- En Roma: Por Estevan Paolinio, 1640.- [14], 402, [36] p.: 1 gravura; 40 cm.- E., D. Pedro, Count of Barcelos (1287-1354), the natural son of King D. Dinis I, a prominent figure in the peninsular medieval culture. We owe him the compilation of songs by Galician-Portuguese troubadours, the «Crónica Geral de Espanha», from 1344 and the «Livro de linhagens», whose Livro Quatro or Nobiliário can be found here in its rare original edition (the second one was published in Madrid in 1646). The four parts of the «Livro de linhagens» (only fragments of the second and third books have survived) were only published in the 19th century, by Alexandre Herculano, in the collection «Portugaliae Monumenta Historica, série Scriptores». The structure of the copy is developed as follows: 1 - Half-Title(1 f.); 2 - Copperplate print allegorical title (missing, reproduced in photogravure); 3 - Title page (f. [+1]); 4 - Text «Al lector», signed by the printer Estevan Paolinio (f. +2);5 - Dedication to Manuel de Moura Corte-Real, 2nd marquis of Castel Rodrigo, signed by Juan Baptista Lavanha (f. +3 to +4 [blank verse]); 6 - Prologue by Count D. Pedro (f. +5); 7 - Index of Titles I, II and III (f. +6); 8 - Text, beginning with paragraph 16 of Title III (p. 1 to 402); 9 - Small note on the continuation of the Nobiliary (f. ll4 [blank verse]); 10 - Index of surnames [and titles] of this nobiliary (f. +1 to +4v); 11 - Index of the names of the men of this nobiliary (f. a1 to c1). Therefore, the copy does not include the «Notas del Marqves de Montebelo al Nobiliario del Conde D. Pedro» (p. 1 to 46) or the «Tablas» (4 f.) that are missing in most of the known copies. Slightly trimmed copy, with some wormholes: on the inner margin, next to the backbone, of f. 49/50 to f. 169/170, and of f. 327 /328 to the end, sometimes affecting the printed text. Title page with foreign ecclesiastical heraldic stamp and white Salema Garção seal. Recent binding, full natural sheepskin. Samodaes, 2366. Palau, 133210

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Iris - Manuscript Illumination" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board.Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Germany 80 + 40pf Medieval Manuscript Illumination stamp issued October 15, 1985. Although illumination is widely regarded as a medieval artform par excellence, it traces its origins back to ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. The classical artists illustrated text with a continuous chronological sequence of scenes, often filling an entire page. The subjects were idealized yet lifelike -- human forms painted against a background of classical architecture. The colors used were ever-so-delicate and the works showed a quite realistic perspective. The illuminated artform grew more popular as people used it to preserve and pass on their religious beliefs. Indeed, there came a time when the chief purpose of illumination was to glorify the Scriptures. At first, the artisans who created these illuminating works were monks working anonymously out of humble devotion to the Scriptures. Often rich princes and churchmen commissioned entire volumes of the Scriptures, theological works and other religious writings as an act of great piety. Later, as wealth and worldly interests increased, illuminating artists were often famous professional laymen who created both secular and religious illuminations. These illuminations were commissioned by private individuals, often moved as much by personal pleasure as by devotion to God. The Iris -- depicted on this original artwork -- was among the figures which were often hand-painted on manuscripts by devoted medieval monks. It symbolized the bridge between heaven and earth and the pact between God and Man. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B09826)
Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Lily - Manuscript Illumination" Signed lower right. In the Middle Ages, books were decorated with figures and ornaments which helped clarify their contents and also entertain the reader. For the medieval monk, the margins of a page often presented an excellent opportunity to bring to life the teachings of Christ. Furthermore, the miniature paintings were used to vividly tell the story of the life and suffering of Christ. Often, the pictures could help mentally underscore certain Christian teachings which the monk felt were particularly important and in need of special emphasis. Later, as the art of illumination became more widely used and the skill of the illuminators grew, private citizens of great wealth would commission a monk or other artist to embellish a book with tiny illuminations. These paintings would often focus on such topics as architecture and landscapes. In addition, artists began embuing the written word with a vast network of vines and wicker. Often, the flowers and creatures held special symbolic meanings for the artist. For example, the lily featured in this artwork has long been a symbol of the innocence and purity of the Virgin Mary. The butterfly was frequently used by medieval monks as a symbol of the virtues of the Virgin Mary. Indeed, by being familiar with symbols and their meaning, the reader in the Middle Ages could learn much about the book's subject. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B09829)
Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "United Nations in Africa" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic on Illustration Board.Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.N. 22c 40th Anniversary of the United Nations stamp issued June 26, 1985. Dedicated to making the world a better place for all peoples, the United Nations has established specialized agencies to deal with the specific problems faced by the nations of the world. These specialized agencies are self-governing within the United Nations and deal with such problems as agriculture, medicine, and living and working conditions. Each agency has its own membership rules and each has signed an agreement with the United Nations. Although all United Nations agencies strive to make the world a better place for all mankind, each has specific responsibilities. Some were established to improve communications and relations between nations ... others were created to help underdeveloped countries implement modern agricultural methods ... and still others provide loans, educational assistance and other types of aid. The nations of Africa are among the many countries around the world which benefit from the work of the UN agencies. Through the assistance of the agencies, the UN has helped combat the famines that often plague Africa and has educated the people on modern agricultural techniques. African nations have also benefited from the UN's economic programs which grant loans, provide training programs and other means of helping the nations develop their own resources. Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "U.S. Postal Service" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board.Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Proof Card for the U.S. 22c Stamp Collecting stamp issued January 23, 1986. Today, it is a simple matter to send a letter abroad. However, in the mid 1800s it was somewhat more troublesome. In countries like Germany, there were numerous sovereign states and many different routes through rough, mountainous terrain. One of the most romantic and interesting postal histories in the world belongs to Australia. Isolated from other nations by thousands of miles of ocean, Australia's early postal system relied on whaling ships to bring mail from the rest of the world. During the mid-1800s these great sailing ships were replaced with the faster and more powerful steamships. One of the most interesting areas of postal history concerns the different signs and symbols used through the ages to urge the postal carrier to hurry the mail to its destination. Sweden had the interesting tradition of attaching two small feathers to the letter by a wax seal. This indicated the need for speed in transit. If black and white feathers were combined, this implied "Very urgent. Travel night and day!" Canada's Post Office was established under the British crown in 1763. However, it was not until 1851 that Canada issued her first postage stamp. This beautiful red stamp depicted a beaver - the world's first pictorial stamp. The beaver was an appropriate subject, for Canada's early prosperity was founded on the profitability of beaver pelts. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B10029)
Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Tiger Swallowtail" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Wildlife of the 50 States 22c Tiger Swallowtail/Michigan stamp issued June 13, 1987. Probably no other butterfly is as familiar in North America as the yellow and black Tiger Swallowtail. Although primarily a resident of woodlands and prairies its preference for garden flowers often brings it into towns and even large cities. The various Tiger Swallowtail species are well distributed throughout the country. In the north it is small and pastel-colored with a brown base, while the Tiger Swallowtails of the deep south are larger and much more vibrant in color with a black base. Belying their delicate beauty, Tiger Swallowtails are strong flyers and can be frequently found visiting mud puddles and brackish waters. They are also apparently attracted to tobacco smoke. A wide variety of ornamental trees such as the wild cherry, birch, poplar, ash, and basswood, provide food for the hungry orange and black striped green larva. While in its pupal stage, the Tiger Swallowtail carefully constructs a one leaf nest by folding the leaf's edges. Then it emerges as a colorful adult once again ready to flutter over the fields and woods. Image Size: 11 x 11 in. Overall Size: 19.25 x 21 in. Unframed. (B10589)
