Rare Hardy Japanese Peonies, Iris, Maples, Magnolias &c [so titled on upper cover], circa 1890, a sample catalogue containing 93 leaves of fine colour lithograph plates with magnificent hand-coloured blooms on Japanese tissue paper, arranged in eight sections with printed paper label mounted as section title before each part, comprising tree peonies (10), hardy Japanese flowering cherries (6 illustrations on 3 leaves), Gauntlett's Japanese herbaceous peonies (27), hardy Japanese maples (31 illustrations on 4 leaves), hydrangeas (9), hardy magnolias (9 illustrations on 5 leaves) and new hardy Japanese irises (35), many with printed and numbered title and price slip pasted to inner or lower margins, a few touching illustrations, versos blank, small typed ticket 'Set 27' to inside front cover, near-contemporary limp morocco with stab-stitched cloth spine tie, gilt-titled upper cover and with importer's stamp in gilt at lower margin, 'V.N. Gauntlett & Co. Japanese Nurseries, Chiddingfold, Surrey', small printed adhesive label at upper margin, 'When returning, kindly see that the Book of Lilies in included', heavily rubbed and some wear to extremities, oblong folio (28 x 37 cm) The Yokohama Nursery Company was founded in 1890 and though Gauntlett's Japanese Nurseries moved to Chiddingfold in 1907 this catalogue must be of an earlier date as from 1900 the Yokohama Nursery catalogues contained chromolithographed illustrations. Nunc primum collecti simulque editi, Frankfurt, in Bibliopolio Cambieriano, 1600, title with woodcut device, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, text in double-column, 6 copper engraved plates (of which 4 are folding), including a view of the Bay of Naples, a bird's-eye view of the town of Nola, and a map of the island of Malta, some pale browning with associated marginal spotting, light waterstain to upper outer corners to first half of volume, contemporary full-calf stamped in black, with the letters IBULGS, and the date 1601 to upper cover, rear cover with central oval gilt blindstamp decoration, with remains of ties, spine with raised bands, joints discreetly restrengthened with split to head of rear joint and foot of upper joint, rubbed and some marked to edges, folio Adams I252. Fine copy in contemporary binding of this compilation of texts on the history of Italy, including Sabellicus on Venice, Paulo Giovio on Lake Como, Ambrosio Leoni on Nola, Claudio Maria Arezzo on Sicily, and a description of the island of Malta from Jean Quintin's Insulae Melitae descriptio amongst others. Provenance: Formerly Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington D.C. (with small ink withdrawal stamp to rear pastedown). (1)

Avec l'explication des C‚r‚monies de l'Eglise, Et des Instructions, Prieres & courtes R‚flexions sur les Myst‚res & Offices que l'on c‚l‚bre dans cette Sainte Semaine, Par Monsieur l'Abe‚ de Bellegarde, Paris: Jacques Collombat, 1732, engraved frontispiece (with blind stamp to lower margin), additional engraved title, four engraved plates, woodcut head & tailpieces, decorative initials, lower outer corner of b1 torn, red ruled margins throughout volume, marbled endpapers with 20th century bookplate of Karl Lachmann to upper pastedown, all edges gilt, contemporary full red morocco (in the manner of Antoine Michel Padeloup le Jeune, fl. 1712-1758), decorated with gilt pointille, floral & foliage decoration, within interlaced fanfare ribbon strapwork design, centre of each board with gilt arms of Louis XIV, discreet repairs at head & foot of spine and to board corners, 8vo The central decorative design appears to occur exactly on other examples of bindings from the period. It appears the design may have been applied via a block or plate, thus enabling the decoration to be applied relatively quickly, whilst mantaining quality and accuracy. A similar example of this design can be found on a 1743 edition of the same work at the British Library (shelf C47g5). (1)
