Gregory X (Pope) Summons to the Abbot of Cluny to manuscript in Latin on vellum 10 lines one large and 4 small initials with pen-and-ink decoration later docket on verso some soiling stamp of both sides 205 x 255 mm. 27th April 1271. *** Pope Gregory X (1210-1276) elected in 1271 after a three year vacancy of the papacy immediately summoned the Second Council of Lyons to consider most importantly the union of the Western and Eastern Churches and the re-conquest of the Holy Land. Cluny abbey in France with its dependent houses was the most influential in Western monasticism in the 10th and 11th centuries although later eclipsed by the rise of the Cistercian and Mendicant orders.

We have been unable to trace any copies at auction in the last 25 years and have located only one copy in a library (Folger). The work was withdrawn from circulation and placed on the Index of Prohibited books in December 1622; being re-issued in 1624 and then subsequent parts later. Bronzini celebrates the abilities and skills of women and in doing so provides much detailed biographical information on the female writers and artists of the time. Provenace: Pietro Odescalchi (ink stamp to title).
