Catullum Veronensem Per baptistam Patrem Emendatum Expositiones cum Indice, collation: A10 B-P8 Q-R4, italic type, commentary surrounding text double column, title within woodcut ornamental border, initial spaces with guide-letters, Q4, 18th century red deer, gilt spine in compartments and with black morocco label, rubbed and scuffed, small 4to (199 x 129mm.), [Venice], [Giorgio de Rusconi], [11 May, 1521].⁂ A rare copy of the first edition of one of the most important printings of Catullus, with a superb provenance. Guarinus based his edition on the manuscript his father had worked on, along with the work of various Catullan scholars. His knowledge of variant readings and interpretations is reflected in his discussions of textual problems, to which he sometimes contributes his own solutions. Provenance: Bernard von Mallinckrodt (1591-1664), bibliophile and originator of the term 'incunabula' in his 1639 work De ortu et progressu artis typographicae (ink ownership inscription to title, dated Vienna 1631); Hopetoun (engraved armorial bookplate); Walter Ashburner (1834-1936), bibliophile and fellow of Merton College, Oxford, (ink stamp to title). China.- Staunton (Sir George) An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China, Atlas vol. only, 44 engraved maps and plates, some folding or double-page, foxing and soiling, mostly to margins, small ink stamp to verso of first and last plates, bookplate of John Stafford Reid Byers, later green half morocco, rubbed and repaired, rebacked, folio, [1797].⁂ Without the two accompanying text volumes, this atlas illustrates the official account of Lord Macartney's voyage and embassy to the Qianlong emperor in 1792-94, the failure of which led to the establishment of the British trading post at Hong Kong. The fine plates by Alexander include birds, views of palaces, temples, barges and a military post, and there is also a detailed map of Macao.

Shiels (George) Original typescript of unpublished novel A Yankee in the Irish Border Wars, 1 vol. in 10 parts, 195pp., some creasing and soiling, ink ownership stamp of George Shiels to upper cover, [early 20th century]; and the original typescript for Shiels' one act play Trooper's Lane, both preserved in custom folding chemise, 4to (2)⁂ George Shiels (1886-1949), wrote for the Abbey Theatre from around 1921 until 1948. Trooper's Lane was rejected by the Abbey Theatre in 1924 and appears to have remained subsequently unpublished.
Australasia.- Australia.- Giles (Ernest) Australia Twice Traversed..., 2 vol., first edition, 6 folding colour maps, 21 plates, with slip printed in red regarding the sale of secondhand copies of the book tipped in before text of vol.1, illustrations, occasional spotting, Ivo C.Hammet's copy with his ink stamp at head of half-titles, other small stamps of Alec P.Matheson, vol.1 hinges weak or repaired, original pictorial cloth, rubbed, spines faded, [Ferguson 9914; Wantrup 202a, "arguably the most handsomely produced of late nineteenth-century Australian books"], 8vo, 1889.⁂ Ivo Hammet (1895-1975), botanist and a pioneer of Australian native plant growing.

Botany.- Fern specimens.- Craig (Eric, compilor and retailer) New Zealand Ferns, 80 specimens on 40ff., each with letterpress label listing the Linnean binomial, ink stamp "New Zealand Ferns mounted by Eric Craig, Princes St., Auckland" to first and final ff., a few specimens loose or becoming so, a few with minor loss but most in excellent condition, first f. loose and a little chipped at margins, advertisement for Eric Craig loosely inserted, original decoratively carved wooden boards, lacking spine, upper cover detached, folio, Auckland, [c.1880].⁂ A good example of a professionally-produced fern album from the emporium of one of New Zealand's best known fern collectors and retailers. Eric Craig was a dealer in tribal artefacts, curios and natural history specimens.

Some discoloration and offset stains in the margins from the mount.
§ Laurence Stephen Lowry, RA (British, 1887-1976) The Family signed lower right in pen "L S Lowry" and with FATG blind stamp offset lithograph 29 x 22.50cm (11 x 9in) Glass scratched lower right corner and by the top edge. The image itself is good and clear. Very slight discolouration or offset staining visible especially along the bottom edge of the mount.

A Louis XVI style mahogany, parquetry and ormolu mounted bureau à cylindre, Paris, late 19th century/early 20th century, after a model by Jean-Henri Riesener, possibly by François Linke (model 100), the top applied with a three quarter gallery above a fall with a ribbon-tied oval marquetry musical trophy medallion, the interior with an arrangement of sixteen pigeonholes and an automatically activated writing panel, the frieze centred by a concealed drawer with an ormolu tablet of putti amongst clouds flanked by flower-filled basket mounts and scrolled handles to the lateral drawers with lock plate possibly stamped to the reverse CT LINKE/SERRURERIE/PARIS and numbered 100, the sides and back with further plaques emblematic of the arts, on tapered square legs ending in acanthus cast feet, bearing the stamp of Edwards & Roberts to the central door, 110cm high, 108cm wide, 62cm deep This secrétaire à cylindre in the Louis XVI style, is a version of another bureau featuring mother-of-pearl trellis marquetry, made by Riesener for Marie-Antoinette's boudoir at Fontainebleau in 1786. The trophy and putti tablet on the present lot were possibly based on the ormolu medallion accompanying a tablet of festive putti, on Marie-Antoinette's secrétaire à abattant, also by Riesener, in the Prince Demidoff Collection, sold San Donato, 22 March 1870, lot 282. An identical bureau à cylinder by François Linke sold Christie s London, 29 September 2005, lot 183 (aggregate price £16,800) and further very similar example by Alfred Beurdeley sold Christie s New York, 14 - 15 April 2011, lot 135 (aggregate price $38,500).
A German giltwood gilt side chair by Johann Valentin Raab , early 19th century, the anthemion decorated cresting above a padded back and bowed drop-in seat, on carved lion monopodia front legs, bearing the stamp I.V. Raab and a paper label fragment This chair is by the Frankfurt-based chair-maker Johann Valentin Raab (1777-1839). His principal commissions include furniture supplied for the Schloss in Würzburg between 1807 and 1809. A closely related armchair in the Frankfurter Historisches Museum, is illustrated in H. Kreisel/G. Himmelheber, Die Kunst des Deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1973, vol. III, p. 81 and p. 98, fig. 499. Provenance: Purchased Christie's London, 13th November 2003, lot 81
