Vintage gelatin silver print. 12 x 16,5 cm. Photothek agency stamp and typed French press text label: Exposition d'art des "Dadaistes" à Berlin, vue generale de l'exposition on the verso.Only a few photographic documents exist today of the International Dada Fair, which opened in Berlin in June 1920. Nonetheless, they succeeded to etch their way into the historic cultural memory. The spectacular show took place at the Kunsthandlung Dr. Otto Burchard, Lützowufer 13. The photo offered here shows the following visitors: from left to right Raoul Hausmann, Hanna Höch, Dr. Burchard, Johannes Baader, Wieland Herzfelde and his wife, Dr. Oz, George Grosz, John Heartfield. On the far left the now missing painting "Kriegskrüppel" by Otto Dix is seen (see also lot 4264). A figure in military uniform with a pig mask dangles from the ceiling, which involved Otto Burchard in a lawsuit. A total of circa 200 exhibits hung on the walls, including printed Dada slogans such as "Nieder die Kunst!" (Down with art!) and "Dada ist die willentliche Zersetzung der bürgerlichen Begriffswelt" (Dada is the willful destruction of the bourgeois conceptual world). – Faded, some buckling from glue on verso, some mirroring in edges/corners, otherwise in good condition.

Only very few prints exist. The creator of this unusual installation was the eccentric Johannes Baader, who later also organized Dada exhibition tours with Richard Hülsenbeck. Some press photos, like this and the previous photo were sent to Paris at the time to promote the Berlin event there as well. Despite the French inscription on the verso of each photo, it is not known whether these photos were published in France at the time. – Faded, some buckling from glue on verso, some mirroring in edges/corners, otherwise in good condition.

Heyden, Bernd -- Old pallbearer at Mahlsdorf cemetery, Berlin. 1973. Vintage gelatin silver print. 29 x 20 cm. Signed and dated in green ink in lower right corner within the image; photographer's Berlin stamp on the verso.Bernd Heyden was closely connected to and integrated in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, where he spent most of his life. The autodidact initially trained as a woman's tailor and worked as an ironer, chauffeur and laboratory assistant, until he was admitted as a photographer in 1974. Since 1967, he worked in the Club junger Fotografen (Club of Young Photographers) founded by Arno Fischer and Sibylle Bergemann. His photographs were rejected by GDR officials as "trash can photography", nonetheless they were highly valued by many of his colleagues. – Some light handling marks, especially in right portion, corners slightly bumped, otherwise in very good condition.

Photographer's stamp, therein negative number on the verso.Hedrich-Blessing studio was founded in 1929 by Ken Hedrich and Henry Blessing. Hundreds of photographic assistants would learn their craft at the studio. Beginning in the 1950's Hedrich-Blessing Photography became associated with the modernist movement and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Mies collaborated with both Bill Hedrich and Bill Engdahl and the firm's archives contain the most extensive photographic record of Mies' works. With a staff of six photographers, Hedrich Blessing also photographed the works of Albert Kahn, Buckminster Fuller, Minoru Yamasaki, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Harry Weese. – A few handling marks, otherwise in very good condition. – With: Typed letter from the office of Mies van der Rohe on his stationery, referring to the signed photograph offered in this lot. - Fold marks.

National Socialist and Anti-Semitic Documents -- Proscription postcard showing Otto Dix' famous painting "Die Kriegskrüppel" (1920) as part of the "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art) exhibition, Munich. 1937. Vintage gelatin silver photo postcard (postally used and written in ink on verso). 9 x 14 cm. "Die Kriegskrüppel" (The War Cripples) was one of the main exhibition works shown in Otto Burchard's Kunsthandlung during the first large Dada Fair in Berlin in 1920. The Städtische Galerie Dresden has an inventory card of the painting with a photo, inventory number, title and stamp "Entartete Kunst", dated 1919 with a price notation of 3000,- MK. The first exhibition of "degenerate art" took place in September 1933, in Dresden city hall. This painting was one of the most hated by the National Socialists and was likely destroyed after the last "Entartete Kunst" exhibiton in the late 1930s. – Edges/corners slightly bumped, a few light indentation marks, otherwise in very good condition.

(3)Provenance:Marambat-Malafosse Atelier Rochegrosse, ToulouseGeorges Rochegrosse was a child prodigy and entered the Académie Julian at the age of twelve, followed by the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he was twice a finalist in the competition for the Prix de Rome. He made his debut at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français in 1882 and his entry the following year, Andromache, was purchased by the State for the Musée de Rouen. His early literary and historical genre was succeeded by more Symbolist works, exemplified by his large painting The Knight of the Flowers which is now in the Musée d'Orsay. From 1900 onwards he spent the winter months in Algeria and became one of the leading exponents of Orientalism in France, exhibiting his work at the annual Salons, as well as at the Salon des Peintures Orientalistes Français.

In his 1768, Essay on Prints he defined the picturesque as 'that kind of beauty which is agreeable in a picture', and during the following two decades he travelled extensively, committing his thoughts and spontaneous sketches to notebooks. He began to expound his "principles of picturesque beauty" and circulated the manuscripts of his tour journal to his friends including Thomas Gray, Horace Walpole and King George III. In 1782, he published Observations on the River Wye.. which was illustrated with aquatints of his sketches, similar to the present lot.
