Carrington (R.C.). Nine Draft Maps, (printed by the Anastatic process) containing all the stars above the eleventh magnitude situated within nine degrees of the North Pole, laid down for the year 1855, single sheet of explanation with the address of Redhill Observatory, plus all nine maps with handwritten notes contained in printed sleeve with presentation to M. Johnson, some spotting, ex-lib. with ink lib. stamps to sleeve and explanation leaf, together with ten loose charts being Mr. Carrington`s Circumpolar Charts for 1855, some soiling and marginal creasing and fraying, ink lib. stamp to upper margin of first map, oblong folio. Manuel John Johnson (1805-59) was the Radcliffe Observer (1839-59), was awarded the RAS gold medal and was president of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1857-58. (2)

Written after he settled in the United States the first work is a masterpiece and a classic of modern mathematics. `In this he proved that if an axiomatic system of set theory of the type proposed by Russell and Whitehead in Principia Mathematica is consistent, then it will remain so when the axiom of choice and the generalized continuum-hypothesis are added to the system`. * Owen (Richard, 1804-92). Autograph letter signed `Richard Owen`, British Museum, 20th September 1856, to James Wyatt (1816-78), `As to the paragraph relating to the generation & scales of eels which appeared in the biographical notice of my deeply lamented friend Mr. Yarrell, which was sent to the Times by my neighbour and friend Mr. Jesse, the only inaccuracy as I have pointed out to the latter, was his imagining Mr. Y. & himself to have been the discovers of the facts stated` and in the next paragraph continuing, `Mr Yarrell called attention to the parasitic worms in eels, as having probably given rise to the notion of there being oviparous; and, with his friend Dr. Roots of Kingston added many corroborative facts to Hunter`s statement`, with a postscript telling Wyatt that he is at liberty to use any of the above about eels, 4 pp., 8vo, together with envelope addressed and signed in Owen`s holograph, penny red stamp and strikes, the pair tipped on to an old album leaf and with a typed copy transcription of the letter by Wyatt`s grandson and a printed leaf of biographical text on Owen (3)
