Gamgee (Joseph Sampson). Gamgee was surgeon to the Queen’s Hospital, Birmingham. He popularised absorbent cotton wool as a surgical dressing and invented Gamgee tissue and the disposable absorbent sanitary towel. He introducted plaster of Paris splinting into Britain in 1854, after previously introduced starched bandaging with pasteboard splinting for the treatment of fractures. Dr. Thomas Taylor practised in Bennetts Hill. (1)
