Quarto, first edition, second state, with imprint altered and errata on ***4 verso, bound in later full calf, gilt-tooled, with decorative spine, ex libris Frederick Shum, Bibliotheca Bathoniensis, with his bookplate pasted inside the front board, University London College Library duplicate, with stamp on verso of title, contents good, 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 in. N.B. Histrio-Mastix is the most extensive and spirited Puritan attack on English Renaissance theater of its time. Prynne mentions Shakespeare by name. The book condemns almost every manifestation of dramatic performance of the period, including the use of young male actors representing women onstage, the "obscene lascivious love songs, most melodiously chanted out upon the stage," and even the celebration of Christmas (pagan, according to Prynne). Prynne was imprisoned for writing the book, had his ears cut off twice, and was branded on both cheeks with the letters S and L (for Seditious Libeller). Histrio-Mastix was banned and publicly burned. F" CONDITION REPORTS One chair has damage to the back left hand corner, another appears to have a replacement stretcher or at least repositioned. Three backs are loose and there are signs of old worm throughout on all chairs mainly on the seat, otherwise wear and tear, surface scratches etc all conducive with age and use. Lord Randolph Churchill (1849-1895), British statesman and father of Winston Churchill, autograph letter signed and dated January 9th 1885. Black ink on headed paper, 'Government House, Bombay', complete with original envelope ('Government of Bombay') bearing India postage stamp and postmarks for Lucknow. The letter refers to Colonel Murray.Provenance: The vendor's grandmother, a Mrs. Mordaunt, was a collector of signed letters and autographs; the letters that she amassed in her lifetime are being offered in this Library Auction.

San Juan" stamp in purple ink. (2)

Original Railway Information Poster / WW1 Interest: An original lithographic railway poster produced for the Railway Clearing House, London, June, 1920. Published by Jas. Truscott & Son Ltd, London. The poster gives notice to passengers that 'season and traders' tickets' issued during the period of the war will be withdrawn 'with certain exceptions' from July 1st 1920. The poster features a 'Midland Railway Authorised for Exhibition' stamp at upper-right. Some creasing/loss around fold-lines. 100cm x 62cm. Together with remnants of a Derby County football poster issued by Midland Railway and dated January, 1912. (2)
