Miller, Arthur.: Focus. New York, Book Find Club, 1945. Tipped in are a copy of Miller's funeral card along with a TLs from Orson Welles. Miller's only published novel, Focus was hailed in the Chicago Sun as a work which "could very well be to the virus of American anti-Semitism what Uncle Tom's Cabin was to the institution of slavery..." Prominent amongst those who endorsed its sentiments was Orson Welles who, at his own expense, bought numerous copies which he sent to like-minded friends and colleagues. Furthermore, he sent a copy to every Member of Congress, as evidenced on the front free endpaper stamp, along with a copy of the letter here enclosed. Welles opens by reminding his readers that "This nation was founded on principles of equality and freedom for all men, regardless of race or national origin..." before questioning their response to "the sorry spectacle of a Representative on the floor of the Congress of the United States, making complete mockery of his office and his fellow Congressmen by vicious, crude, and debasing attacks on American minorities." He goes on to commend Miller's "wonderful novel about the cancer of race-hate" and concludes by urging Members "... to speak out for your constituents now against demagoguery, slander, and race hatred; REAL un-Americanism".
