Ascension. 1944 printing of the 1d black and yellow-orange, unmounted mint sheet of 60 with R1/6 ‘tree’, a couple of vertical folds but still fine. Also 1953 printing of the 1d ‘Three Sisters’ (white paper), unmounted mint sheet of 60 (showing the additional perf hole at the top of each stamp, making it easy to distinguish this from the common 1949 printing). Ceylon. Booklets. 1935 1r 80 Pictorial booklet, in very fine condition for these although the staple is broken and there is a little age-spotting on the reverse of the cover. The stamps (in panes of 10) are excellent and the tragedy is that someone used just one stamp from the booklet, leaving two intact panes and 9 stamps from the third pane! SG SB 13a (£900)
Egypt. British Forces. 1935 1p Silver Jubilee seal, an unmounted mint block of four with the lower right stamp showing the R2/2 or 4/2 short ‘U’ variety; some trifling offsetting of overprint. Left marginal, showing staple holes and the left margin being slightly foxed well clear of stamps. Pinhole (part of the production process) in LL stamp. SG A10 (£1100)

Small group of items including some Japanese Occupation with North Borneo 1943 4ct unmounted (8, with a block of 4), 8ct unmounted (4); Straits 1937 set blocks including 2ct Die 2 Plate block (slight separation, one stamp with small thin); 3ct green, 5ct Die 2, 8ct grey and $2 blocks of 4, and others including $5 but this with poor gum. South Africa. (1910 Opening of Union Parliament). 1910 Post Office publicity card (144 x 202mm) for ‘Commemoration Postage Stamp’, the 2½d affixed to centre with typical toning around the edges of the adhesive and a couple of light touches elsewhere, punch holes at the top of the card as usual. Scarce
South Africa (King’s Heads). 1920 1/3d violet with watermark inverted. Lower right corner block of four with Plate no. 1, slightly awkward mounting, the bottom right stamp with a mark beneath the hinge which has resulted in a very small thin. Nonetheless a rare piece. SG 13w (£560/SACC R9000 for a pair)
South Africa Airmails. 1925 1d imperforate, an unused example with portion of adjoining stamp, with serious faults as have all the 12 examples discovered (see the account in the Handbook). This example is cut into at right and stained at top but is a great rarity, especially with the validating portion of the adjoining stamp. SG 26 var.
South Africa 4d Triangular. 1926 4d colour trial in milky blue, perforated ‘SPECIMEN’ type B1, unused without gum. A trifle aged on reverse. Offered with Bradbury, Wilkinson decorative imprint in mauve (small part missing at left). Vendor states that this trial was ‘… rescued from Argentina, where the owner had soaked the backing card off and discarded all except the stamp and the separate logo….. That has to be a hanging offence.’

South Africa Bradbury Wilkinson Pictorials. 1927 Bradbury Wilkinson 5/- Die Proofs. The first of vignette only in black on wove paper in sunken format (76 x 75mm, overall 103 x 80mm) initialled and dated 9/11/26; the second of frames only in green, English and Afrikaans. The latter in reduced sunken format, the whole 110 x 85mm, initialled and dated 9/11/26, with a correction marked at base of Afrikaans stamp. A wonderful pair of proofs, ex De Villiers

South Africa Unhyphenated Pictorials. 1931 2d slate-grey and lilac (watermark upright) positional vertical strip of 5, R16-20/4, fine mint. Upper stamp with complete omission of frame and second stamp with all but total omission. A similar item from Patrick Williams’ collection offered in Grosvenor’s sale 5.10.12 realised £7200 (including premium). Interestingly, both this strip and the Williams strip can be clearly seen to have upright watermark; SG’s listing is currently for the omission to have inverted watermark.
