LOWRY L. S.: (1887-1976) English Artist. Signed colour 6.5 x 4.5 postcard, being a reproduction of Lowry's painting entitled Coming out of School (1927). The card features a colour postage stamp, with a reproduction of the same painting, neatly affixed in the upper right corner and post marked at Worthing, Sussex, July 1967. Signed by Lowry with his name alone to the lower white border. The signature is a little light although legible. One slight corner crease, otherwise VG

DAHL ROALD: (1916-1990) British Novelist. T.L.S., Roald Dahl, one page, 4to, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, 4th November 1980, to Mr. Ruffell. Dahl thanks his correspondent for sending a postal order and remarks 'Hundreds of requests like yours come into this house, but only one in a thousand encloses a stamp. Here's your autograph.' Together with a second T.L.S., Roald Dahl, one page, 4to (large portion removed), Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, 24th May 1984, to Miss. Parish, stating that he doesn't send photographs 'but here are the two autographs you asked for'. Dahl evidently originally signed the letter twice, one signature remains and the other has since been removed, hence a large area of the paper missing. G to VG, 2

BYRON LORD: (1788-1824) British Poet, a leading figure in the Romantic Movement. D.S., Byron, being a signed cheque, Newstead Abbey, Nottingham, 10th January 1812. The holograph document is addressed to Byron's attorney, J. Hanson of 6 Chancery Lane, London, and requests that the sum of £50 be paid to Mr. Mealey. With blind embossed revenue stamp in the upper left corner and various countersignatures and notes to the verso. Some very light, minor age wear, VG Owen Mealey (d.1823) was employed by Byron as a Steward at Newstead Abbey. He lived in the gatehouse, known as the 'hut' and was dismissed in 1815. On 10th March 1812, exactly two months after Byron signed the present document, his second book, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, was published and sold out in five days, prompting Byron's observation 'I awoke one morning and found myself famous'.

RAY JAMES EARL: (1928-1998) American Criminal, assassin of Martin Luther King Jr., 1969. A.L.S., J. E. Ray, one page, 4to, n.p. (Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, Nashville, Tennessee), May 1996, to Stacey Johnson. Ray sends his correspondent a book, although explains 'This is not the main book re: the MLK case. It is out of print. The person who did the computer work made numerous errors. I assume on purpose.' Ray further adds that an international postage stamp can't be used at the prison and that 'some small towns don't know what it is' and concludes 'I don't have time to answer all mail.' Together with the book referred to, a paperback edition of Day of the Pathogen, published by Praetorian Press, Tennessee, 1993. Signed and inscribed by Ray to the title page, 'To: Stacey Johnson, best from James Earl Ray' and dated May 1996 in his hand. Accompanied by the original envelope. VG, 2

PICCARD AUGUSTE: (1884-1962) Swiss Physicist, Inventor and Explorer, made the first balloon flight into the stratosphere with an altitude of 51,775 feet on 18th August 1931. Interesting T.L.S., A Piccard, one page, 4to, Lausanne, 3rd January 1960, to Mr. H. Dyson, in French. Piccard thanks his correspondent for inviting him to participate in the research at Loch Ness and states that, before he gives a definite answer, he would like to receive some further information. Piccard continues to ask six questions including 'When was the famous monster last sighted?' and 'What is the maximum depth of Loch Ness?' With the stamp of the noted Rawlins Collection of Historical Documents in the lower right corner. Some very slight creasing, otherwise VG

COCHRANE THOMAS: (1775-1860) British Admiral, a daring and successful captain of the Napoleonic Wars. Rare L.S., Cochrane, one page, 4to, on board the Greek ship Ellas, 15th July 1827, to Mr. Schilher, Captain of the small transport ship Bavaria. Cochrane writes in his capacity as Admiral of the Greek Navy and asks his correspondent where he may find the best wood for his ships, further asking him to 'let him know if the small ship (under Captain Nash) that is at the Southern Straits of Euripo is turning around Karisto to the fortifications of Euripo'. In concluding he remarks 'Please catch the biggest number of ships passing without permission.' Originally from the noted collection of Ray Rawlins and bearing his small circular stamp in the lower left corner. A couple of very minor, small spots of foxing and very light age wear to one edge, otherwise VG

LIGONIER JOHN: (1680-1770) British Field Marshal. D.S., J L Ligonier, one page, small folio, Office of Ordnance, 14th October 1757. The attractive manuscript document is an order for various items, including paper cartridges, ladles & spunges, tackle hooks and aprons of lead, to be issued from His Majesty's stores and sent to Woolwich where they have been requested by the officers for supply of Naval stores. Signed by Ligonier at the foot and countersigned by Charles Frederick (1709-1785, Surveyor-General of the Ordnance 1750-82). Originally from the noted collection of Ray Rawlins and bearing his small circular stamp to the verso. One small area of paper loss in the lower left corner, not affecting the text or signatures. Together with George Wade (1673-1748) British Military Commander, Commander-in-Chief of the Forces, 1745. D.S., George Wade, one page, small folio, Office of Ordnance, 16th September 1742. The attractive manuscript document is an order for various items, including oyle and beeswax, to be supplied to the Gunners Stores on board His Majesty's Ship Royal Caroline commanded by Captain Charles Molloy. Signed at the foot by Wade and countersigned by Thomas Lascelles (1670-1751, Colonel) and one other. With blank integral leaf. Originally from the noted collection of Ray Rawlins and bearing his small circular stamp in the upper right corner. Some slight splitting at the folds, also including George Beauclerk (1704-1768) British General, Governor of Gibraltar. Son of the 1st Duke of St. Albans and grandson of King Charles II and his mistress Nell Gwynne. A.L.S., G Beauclerk, two pages, 4to, Edinburgh, 5th January 1764, to a gentleman. Beauclerk writes to his correspondent on military matters, referring to various individuals and officers and giving his reasons for not agreeing to allow Lieutenant Gordon to retire on full pay. Signed ('Montgomery of Alamein') in bold blue fountain pen ink across a light area at the centre of the image, and further annotated in his hand to the verso, 'Taken in Germany just before we crossed the Rhine in March 1945'. STUART CHARLES: (1720-1788) Jacobite Pretender to the thrones of England, Scotland & Ireland, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie or The Young Pretender. Fine A.L.S., Charles P, one page, 8vo, Paris, 1st January 1748, to Comte d'Argenson, in French. The Prince states that he has sought an audience with the King through the good offices of the Duc de Gesvres, and hopes that he can meet d'Argenson soon unless work prevents it. Professionally matted in gold and cream alongside a circular engraving of the Prince and framed and glazed in an ornate gilt frame to an overall size of 25 x 18. The small red circular stamp of the Archives d'Argenson at the University of Poitiers appears at the head of the letter, not affecting the text or signature. Rare. VG Marc-Pierre de Voyer de Paulmy d'Argenson (1696-1764) French Politician, Secretary of State for War 1743-57. Louis-Leon Marie Potier (1695-1774) Duc de Gesvres 1739-74.

[CHARLES & DIANA]: [CHARLES] (1948- ) Prince of Wales & DIANA (1961-1997) Princess of Wales. A good A.L.S., Diana, two pages, small 4to, Buckingham Palace, 30th June (1981), to Mrs. W. Lindsay. The Princess announces 'What a lovely surprise I got when Mummy arrived with a parcel' and continues 'Thank you so much for spoiling us with a particularly lovely piece of china - it will make any mantlepiece look smart & I picture it being at Highgrove.' Diana further remarks 'Only four weeks to go but there seems an awful lot to do & organise!' Accompanied by the original envelope (FR) hand addressed by Diana. Together with a presentation piece of wedding cake from the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, 29th July 1981. The piece of traditional wedding cake is contained in the original white and silver box printed with the initials of the Royal couple and the Prince of Wales feathers to the lid. The cake is wrapped in the original doyley and the original printed card (some light overall staining, FR) is also loosely inserted. Accompanied by the original envelope. Also including an unsigned colour 10 x 8 photograph of Prince Charles and Princess Diana on their wedding day, accompanied by their wedding party. With the official credit stamp of photographer Lord Lichfield to the verso. Contained in a presentation folder. Generally VG, 3 Princess Diana's letter, as she rightly states, is written a month before her wedding to the Prince of Wales at St Paul's Cathedral, London, on 29th July 1981. Their marriage was widely billed as 'the wedding of the century' Prince Charles and Lady Diana had no fewer than 27 wedding cakes made for their marriage, the official wedding cake being supplied by the Naval Armed Forces. Other suppliers included Classic Celebration Cakes of Cheshire who also supplied cakes for other Royal weddings. One of their wedding cakes was created by the Belgian pastry chef S. G. Sender, 'cake maker to the kings'.

Photograph by Vivienne and bearing her credit stamp to the verso. Signed ('Winston S. Churchill') in fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount. A very minor, light stain just touches the paraph beneath the signature. Together with a T.L.S. by Doreen Pugh, Churchill's Private Secretary, one page, 8vo, Chartwell, Westerham, Kent, 24th June 1957, to Trooper F. G. Gregory, sending thanks on behalf of Churchill for Gregory's letter and remarking that Churchill 'is happy to send you the enclosed photograph with his good wishes'. A good vintage signed and inscribed 6 x 8 photograph of Ho Chi Minh in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink to the lower white border and dated 1955 in his hand. A black ink calligraphic inscription in another hand, in French, appears in the upper white border. A small square red ink stamp appears in the lower white border, only very slightly touching the conclusion of the signature. Rare. EX

Signed First Day Cover featuring a colour design commemorating the Presidential Inauguration, 10th May 1994, with the caption Many Cultures - One Nation in English and Afrikaans. The cover features four different colour postage stamps, one with a portrait of Mandela, and is post marked at Pretoria, 10th May 1994. Signed by Mandela in ink with his name alone to a clear area, alongside an official black ink stamp of the Private Bag of the Office of the President, Cape Town, 22nd September 1997. Lightly mounted and professionally matted in beige beneath an attractive folio calligraphic copy of a speech, beginning 'Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate...', mis-attributed as Mandela's 1994 inaugural address. Framed and glazed in a plain silver coloured frame to an overall size of 15.5 x 24.5. VG

A Royal Crown Derby porcelain breakfast set comprising a plate, cup and saucer in cream, each featuring the gilt cipher of Edward VII, detailed in red, blue and white enamel and with an attractive gilt border. The cup and plate both bear the Royal Crown Derby date stamp of 1903 and the saucer 1909.
