Shannon Stirnweis (American, B. 1931) "German Settlers" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Concord stamp issued April 29, 1983. After a long and tedious voyage from the shores of Germany, the Concord ... a rugged sailing vessel that carried the first German immigrants to America ... arrived in late 1683, in the vicinity of Pennsylvania. As soon as these German immigrants arrived by way of Philadelphia, almost all spread quickly into the country just outside the periphery of early English and Quaker settlement and control. The first real German settlement was at Germantown, founded by Francis Daniel Pastorius, the leader of this first group of German Settlers. Pastorius had purchased the land for the settlement from William Penn ... from whence Pennsylvania was named. According to Pastorius, "We named the place Germantown, which means the Brother City of the Germans." Pastorius' group included mainly people that had experienced religious oppression in their homeland ... German Quakers and a scattering of Mennonites, all in search of freedom and opportunity. All of these people brought their own special talents with them to their new home -- thus, making their living from their many trades and crafts. During the next forty years, several thousand more German and Dutch immigrants swarmed into Pennsylvania. A few found work either in or around Germantown, but most moved into the surrounding country and became successful farmers. Image Size: 17.75 x 15 in. Overall Size: 21.5 x 18.75 in. Unframed. Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "EC-121 Constellation" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Constellation Classic Collection Series stamp issued July 19, 1997. The C-121 Constellation evolved from Lockheed's Super Constellation Model 1049 -- the last piston-engined aircraft to be built by Lockheed, with production ending in 1958. Equipped with four Wright turbo compound engines, the plane was supplied to a variety of civil airlines around the world, including America's Eastern Airlines. The long-range, military transport version shown on this painting carried additional fuel in two wing-tip tanks and one fuselage tank, for a total fuel capacity of 8,750 gallons -- enough for 24 hours of continuous flying time. The transport could be quickly converted to carry 75 passengers, 47 litter patients and attendants, or 14 tons of freight. Image Size: 16.25 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 20 x 14.75 in. Unframed. Tom McNeely (Canadian, B. 1935) "Otis Redding" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 29c Otis Redding American Music Series stamp issued June 16, 1993. As a high school student in Macon, Georgia, Otis Redding was so impressed by local blues-shouting singer Little Richard that he decided to pursue a full-time career as a professional musician himself. In 1959, at just 18, Redding was already on his way toward achieving that goal, cutting his first record, She's Alright. He continued to doggedly follow his dream for the next three years but with little success, until fate took a hand and propelled him to stardom. Visiting his friend Johnny Jenkins during a recording session in Memphis, Redding used Jenkins' left-over studio time to quickly cut These Arms of Mine, his first record to break into the Hot 100. Over the following four years, Redding charted with a number of other hits, including Try a Little Tenderness, Mr. Pitiful, and That's How Strong My Love Is. Redding's rendition of Jerry Butler's I've Been Loving You Too Long hit Number 21 in 1965. The up-tempo Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa also climbed the charts, reaching Number 29 in early 1967. But Redding's career was to be all too short. Eight years after rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper died in an airplane crash, history repeated itself. Redding and several members of his band were killed when their plane smashed into a frozen lake in Wisconsin on December 10, 1967. Ironically, the ballad Dock of the Bay, released a month later, became Redding's biggest hit. It reached the Top 10 in both the United States and Britain, ensuring his status as a Rock 'n' Roll legend. Image Size: 22 x 17 in. Overall Size: 29.5 x 24 in. Unframed. (B14287)

Chuck Ripper (American, B. 1929) "Humboldt's Penguins" Signed lower right. Original Gouache Water Color on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the United Nations s7 Humboldt's Penguin stamp issued March 3, 1993. Also called the Peruvian Penguin, the Humboldt's Penguin is a rare bird indeed. Unlike most penguins -- which are residents of bitterly cold Antarctic regions -- the Humboldt's Penguin is found almost solely along the coast of South America, as its other name would suggest. Interestingly, the Humboldt's Penguin has evolved unique methods of adapting to tropical heat. Compared to Antarctic penguins, it has very sparse plumage and even completely bare spots to permit heat loss. The thick layer of subcutaneous fat found in other penguins is far thinner in the Humboldt's Penguin, which also has increased blood supply to certain areas of the skin, enhancing heat radiation. This fascinating bird formerly thrived in the cold waters of the Humboldt Current off the coast of South America. Nutrient-rich, these waters support large quantities of fish -- including the anchovies and pilchards which are the Humboldt's Penguin's favorite food. But despite the ability to breed all year, Humboldt's Penguin populations have been declining at an alarming rate. Human interference with nest sites, egg removal and habitat reduction caused by guano collection have all taken their toll. Today this bird faces yet another human threat. Commercial fisheries are removing anchovies and pilchards in large numbers, reducing the food supply and adding stress to the penguin's already tenuous grip on survival. Image Size: 14.75 x 12.25 in. Overall Size: 17.75 x 14.75 in. Unframed. (B14188)

Lot 478

Chuck Ripper (American, B. 1929) "Brown Pelican" Signed lower right. Original Gouache/Watercolor painting board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Brown Pelican stamp issued October 2, 1996. The Brown Pelican is a large coastal bird that weighs eight pounds and has a seven-foot wingspan. During the breeding season, this waterfowl is characterized by a large gray bill, featherless black throat patch, white head, gray-brown body, and cinnamon-brown hindneck and nape. A colony nester, this bird often lays three eggs in a nest of dead vegetation or directly on the ground. When feeding, the young pelican practically crawls into its parent's beak to eat the partially digested food its parent produces. With its large beak, short tail and waddling walk, the Brown Pelican appears awkward and clumsy on land. When airborne, however, this bird is a graceful flier. The pelican launches into flight with several rapid wingbeats. Once aloft, it glides occasionally, flapping its wings to maintain altitude. Brown Pelicans often fly quite close to the water's surface while hunting for fish, but even 20 to 50 feet above the water a pelican can easily spot its prey. Although graceful in the air, the Brown Pelican appears to make a crash landing as it swoops down to catch a fish. This impressive bird will emerge from the water with a fish held crosswise in its beak, then effortlessly flip the prey into its pouch. Over the past few decades Brown Pelican populations have drastically declined. This is due to pesticide use that has contaminated rivers and coastal waters. The Brown Pelican absorbs the chemical through food that causes thinning of its egg shells, decreasing successful reproduction rates. Image Size: 14.5 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 17.75 x 15 in. Unframed. (B15509)

Lot 479

Chuck Ripper (American, B. 1929) "Female Stoplight Parrotfish Among Coral" Signed lower right. Original Gouache/Watercolor painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Mint Stamps of the World Collectors Panel for the Nevis Fish stamp issue of September 1, 1993. The males of the species known as Parrotfish, the Blue Thum is distinguishable from its mate by its blue body color and the yellow hue of its tail base and gill cover. Occasionally, it attains larger size and more brilliant shades than the female, becoming a terminal-phase or "supermale." The flesh of the Blue Thum spoils quickly discouraging human predators. In contrast, the striking red body, brown head and multicolored scales of the Red Thum make it a highly visible fish. Reaching up to 20 inches in size, it is one of the reef's most magnificent residents. So meticulous is the Red Thum in its search for food that in the process of grazing for algae on coral and rock, it turns them into fine sand. Except in special cases, this female outshines her partner, the Blue Thum in appearance and size. Image Size: 20.5 x 16.25 in. Overall Size: 22.75 x 18.75 in. Unframed. (B14485)

Dean Ellis (New York, 1920 - 2009) "Life of John F. Kennedy - Nuclear Test Ban" Signed lower right. Original oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the First Day Cover for the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c Nuclear Test Ban stamp issued May 29, 1995. In August 1963, the United States and the Soviet Union signed a treaty that eliminated all above-ground atomic bomb testing in a diplomatic coup, Kennedy knew that his Soviet adversary, Nikita Krushchev, would welcome an olive branch after testing America's will to fight less than one year earlier. On October 22, 1962, Kennedy had placed a brief "quarantine of shipping to the island of Cuba after learning Soviet missiles were being based there. Thus, on June 10, 1963, Kennedy suggested a limited nuclear testing ban in a speech at the American University in which he stated, "If we cannot now end our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity." Khrushchev later said it was "the best speech by any President since Roosevelt." On September 24,1963, the treaty was ratified by the U.S. Senate. Image Size: 11.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 14 x 15.25 in. Unframed. (B15042)

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Cardinal" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 30c Cardinal Flora and Fauna Series stamp issued June 22, 1991. A flash of red streaking through densely wooded park land accompanied by a sweet, clear trill indicates the presence of one of North America's most popular songbirds -- the cardinal. Often referred to as a cardinal grosbeak or redbird, the cardinal is common to North and South America but maintains a decided preference for the temperate regions of the Midwestern and eastern United States. While both the male and female possess a distinctive crest, the male outshines its mate in brilliant plumage. He jauntily sports the deep crimson feathers and black-ringed beak associated with the species, while her dun-colored mantle provides camouflage for brooding. Cardinals begin to mate in April and frequently breed until mid-September. The female often takes three to five days to build her cup-shaped nest in bushes or hedges close to houses, and lays from two to five eggs. Two weeks later the downy young hatch, and within nine days they are on their own. Within a year the juveniles are able to sing, warbling the flute-like, descending song which characterizes the species. Image Size: 14.5 x 17.75 in. Overall Size: 14.25 x 17.75 in. Unframed. Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Ruby-throated Hummingbird Taking Nectar" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Ruby-throated Hummingbird stamp issued June 15, 1992. "No sooner has the returned sun again introduced the vernal season, and caused millions of plants to expand their leaves and blossoms to the genial beams, than the little Hummingbird is seen advancing of fairy wings, carefully visiting every opening flower cup. Its gorgeous throat in beauty and brilliance baffles all competition. Now it goes to a fiery hue, and again is changed to the deepest velvety black." Thus wrote the great naturalist, John James Audubon, of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Audubon -- like many before and since -- was entranced by the little flying jewel. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the best known of North America's Hummingbirds, for it is found regularly in eastern North America. Ranging from Panama to Nova Scotia, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird also has one of the most impressive migrations of the hummingbirds, although not quite as great as that of the Rufous Hummingbird. However, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird must cross the vast expanse of the Gulf of Mexico in one shot, an astounding accomplishment for such a small bird. Yet, with enough fat reserves, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is able to make the journey without mishap. Image Size: 19.75 x 17.5 in. Overall Size: 21 x 18.75 in. Unframed. (B13682)

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Elf Owl Perched in Saguaro" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.S. 33c Elf Owl Perched in Saguaro stamp issued April 6, 1999. One of the world's smallest owls, the Elf Owl is five to six inches high and weighs less than two ounces. Denizen of deserts, and woodlands and canyons of the American Southwest, this tiny bird is identified by its large yellow eyes, short tail, and streaked and spotted grayish-brown plumage. Being nocturnal, the Elf Owl is most often seen at dawn or dusk. Because of its small size, it isn't equipped to hunt large rabbits or rodents, and thus feeds primarily on moths, beetles, grasshoppers and small reptiles. Scorpions are also an important food source. Not called a "wise owl" for nothing, before eating a scorpion, this diminutive bird first removes the poisonous stinger. When feeding on flying insects, it simply snatches them in midair with its clawed feet. One of the most abundant birds in the desert Southwest, the Elf Owl roosts and nests in abandoned woodpecker holes in trees or saguaro cacti, where it is protected from the oppressive desert heat. Like other owl species, the Elf Owl does not build a genuine nest, but lays an average of 3 to 5 white eggs on the floor of the cavity or tree hole. When the eggs hatch, the young emerge blind and covered with whitish down. Both parents share in rearing the young. The male brings food to the female until the hatchlings are half grown, then feeds them directly. Image Size: 12 x 10.5 in. Overall Size: 13 x 12 in. Unframed. (B16360)

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Three Legs of Man Sculpture" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Isle of Man Europa 1987 Modern Art - Architecture stamp issued April 29, 1987. On the pastoral southeastern shore of the Isle of Man lies one of the Isle's main ports of entry, the modern Ronaldsway Airport. Set amid pastures reminiscent of the English Lake District, Ronaldsway welcomes thousands of tourists to the Isle. Proud of their Manx heritage, the Isle's citizens felt some unique symbol of their heritage should welcome visitors to Man especially during the Isle's Millennium Year which took place in 1979. After holding a design competition, artist Bryan Kneale was commissioned to complete his winning entry, a free-standing sculpture entitled Three Legs of Man, which now stands just outside the airport. The sculpture depicts the traditional emblem of the Isle of Man which symbolizes the Manx spirit of independence and determination. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. Faith Jaques (British, B. 1923) "Boys on Bicycles" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Cover for the International Year of the Child stamp issued in 1979 by countries all around the world. The bicycle is a unique and grand invention -- one of the most efficient means ever created to convert human energy into propulsion. First devised in France in the 19th century, the bicycle today is an important means of transportation and a worldwide sport and industry. Kirkpatrick Macmillan is credited with inventing the first modern bike, after he developed the drivetrain in 1839. Shortly thereafter, the first recorded bicycle race in the world occurred when Macmillan wagered a coach driver he could win a race from Glasgow, Scotland, to the nearby town of Sanquhar. Macmillan's confidence in his abilities was well-founded, as he won decisively, an admirable feat considering his bicycle weighed over 80 pounds and had awkward wooden wheels rimmed with iron. Today, bicycles are the most prolific road vehicles in many countries. Bicycle touring and racing are two popular European sports, which are also practiced in the United States to a lesser degree. Touring is often organized into clubs. The Pickwick Bicycle Club of London, founded in 1870, is the world's oldest touring club. Early cycle clubs played an important role in their outspoken and fearless support of the sport of cycling, against the prevailing mood of the day. Today, over 50 million people around the world cycle regularly, enjoying the benefits of good health and vigor that come naturally with cycling. Image Size: 6.25 x 7 in. Overall Size: 9.75 x 10.5 in. Unframed. (B05518)

Gordon Beningfield (British, 1936 - 1998) "Standing Cypress" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.S. 29c Standing Cypress stamp issued July 24, 1992. A showy flower of early to midsummer, standing cypress blooms from May to August. The plume of tubular orange-red flowers is borne on a tall, straight stalk. The inside of the flower is dappled with yellow streaks or splotches. The leaves are pinnately divided into almost threadlike segments, creating an airy, feathery look. Standing cypress prefer well-drained soils of sandy, open areas and gravel-strewn river banks. Although native to the southeast, standing cypress has escaped cultivation and become naturalized in some areas of the northeast. A biennial, standing cypress has a two year growth cycle; the first year it develops a good root system and the second year it produces foliage and flowers. A favorite addition to gardens, standing cypress readily reseeds itself. Attracted by the scarlet flowers, hummingbirds feed on the sweet nectar. Because of their close similarities, the genus Ipomopsis often is used synonymously with Gilia -- a genus of more western species. Image Size: 7 x 6 in. Overall Size: 11.5 x 10.5 in. Unframed. Gordon Beningfield (British, 1936 - 1998) "Dutchman's Breeches" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.S. 29c Dutchman's Breeches stamp issued July 24, 1992. Found in rich woods and ravines, the dainty flowers of Dutchman's breeches blooms from April to May. The flowers have four petals united in two pairs. Two larger white or pinkish petals form the "breeches," while a smaller pair of yellowtinged petals encloses the stigma. The genus name, derived from the Greek words dis -- twice -- and centron -- spur -- describes the form of the flower. The species epithet, cucullaria -- which means hoodlike -- refers to the smaller pair of petals. Bumblebees pollinate the flowers as they sip the nectar inside the spurs with their long proboscises. Unable to reach the nectar, other bees with shorter proboscises can only collect the pollen. The highly dissected, bluish green foliage of Dutchman's breeches makes a pleasing contrast to the delicate flowers. The leaves have been used in folk medicine as a poultice to treat skin ailments. Dutchman's breeches is closely related to the garden favorite, bleeding hearts. Image Size: 7 x 6 in. Overall Size: 11.5 x 10.5 in. Unframed. (B13820)

H. Douglas Pratt (American, B. 1944) "Masked Booby" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Water Color Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c Masked Booby stamp issued February 26, 1996. The largest of the three species of boobies found on the Marshall Islands, the Masked Booby restricts itself to the northern atolls of Bikar and Taongi. All boobies are large seabirds that capture fish by aerial diving. Boobies feed in large flocks, and often prey on fish driven to the surface by larger underwater predators such as tuna. Consequently, boobies are important to local fishermen, as a circling flock usually means good fishing is at hand. The Masked Booby is predominantly white with black flight feathers and tail. It has a distinct black mask that gives this seabird its name. The Masked Booby seldom wanders far from the islands where it nests. Although occasionally found on beaches, the nests are usually built in vegetated areas where the birds clear circles and build up low mounds of dead plant material. This painting depicts a Masked Booby in a typical nest setting. Image Size: 5.75 x 6.75 in. Overall Size: 7.25 x 9 in. Unframed. (B15279)

Ivan Kozlov (Russian, B. 1937) "Smew" Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the 1992 USSR Conservation of Waterfowl stamp issued July 1, 1992. In both Russia and the United States, the stately migration of colorful and abundant waterfowl is a seasonal rite of passage which captures the hearts and imaginations of wildlife enthusiasts in both nations. To help conserve its rich waterfowl heritage, the All Russia Society for the Conservation of Nature -- inspired by the success of America's waterfowl conservation stamp program -- issued the 1992 First of Nation Russia Duck Stamp, selecting acclaimed Russian artist Ivan Koslov's painting of the black and white Smew. A European species of the genus Merganser, the diminutive Smew is common to the vast reaches of Siberia. This beautiful waterbird has also been found during fall and winter in very small numbers on islands off western Alaska. In nuptial plumage, the male is a spectacular portrait of black-on-white. The hen is also quite striking with its vivid, russet-brown head and dark gray body. Like the Common Goldeneye and the Hooded Merganser, the Smew broods in tree cavities along flowing streams or small ponds. Image Size: 7.75 x 11.25 in. Overall Size: 8.25 x 12.25 in. Unframed. Ivan Kozlov (Russian, B. 1937) "Ruddy Duck" Signed and dated ('90) lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the First Day Cover for the USSR 1991 20k Oxyura leucocephala Duck conservation stamp issued July 1, 1991. The small, stocky Ruddy Duck is one of the most common of the diving ducks and is best described in human-like terms. Lovely, frolicsome and somewhat impish, a flock of Ruddy Ducks brings to mind a school ground full of young children. The Ruddy Duck is certainly not as agile as a child, however. When a Ruddy is disturbed, it takes to wing with great difficulty, splashing across the water's surface as it flaps its wings. Finally, with enough momentum gained, the Ruddy Duck takes to the air. Perhaps because of its clumsiness when taking off, it most often is seen paddling about the water and diving for food. The Ruddy Duck is found throughout much of the world and although it is a diving duck, it prefers small waters. Other diving ducks can be found on large reservoirs and lakes, but not the Ruddy. The little, chunky duck nests near small ponds and lakes. During the off-season, some of the birds can be found on larger bodies of water. In the breeding grounds on the prairies of the United States and the steppes of the Soviet Union, the hen Ruddy will lay as many as ten eggs on a tightly-woven platform of grass and twigs near the water. The eggs themselves are unusual, for they are much larger than eggs of other species. For three weeks, the eggs are carefully incubated and when hatched, the hen teaches her young to swim and dive. And when they are able, they will launch into the skies in their distinctive style. Image Size: 14 x 11.75 in. Overall Size: 18.75 x 14.75 in. Unframed. (B12916)

John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "Best Friend of Charleston Locomotive" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Best Friend of Charleston stamp issued October 1, 1987. As railroads came to be built, American ingenuity and spirit took over, and the design and production of locomotives in this country soon became reality. While sail cars and horse drawn entities were not unknown, it was the experimental steam engine which quickly fired the imagination of the nation's mechanically-minded entrepreneurs. The Charleston & Hamburg Line had as its chief engineer Horatio Allen, who in 1829 had designed the "Stourbridge Lion" -- America's first operational locomotive. The success of the imported Lion gave Allen the encouragement he needed to attempt an American-made version. Thus, the first American-built steam locomotive was produced at the West Point Foundry and was named, "Best Friend of Charleston." In December of 1830, it became the first locomotive ever to pull a train of cars by steam power along American railroad tracks. And one month later, the six-mile railroad began formal operation hauling some two hundred guest passengers, most of whom were shareholders and their families, at a speed of twenty-one miles per hour, and marking its progress by intermittent explosions from a small Army field gun, specially requisitioned for the trip. Later, the two hundred guests were replaced by a much more realistic number -- forty to fifty -- of paying customers who traveled the Charleston & Hamburg Line. Image Size: 13.75 x 12 in. Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "China Scenes" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.N. 20c China Flags of the U.N. Series stamp issued September 23, 1983. Stretching from the snowy-white peaks of Tibet, across the wide Central Plains of the Gobi Desert and concluding at the shores of the Pacific Ocean, the People's Republic of China is an expansive nation...in fact, the third largest in the world. It is also a country of proud heritage, and...with a written history that stretches over three thousand years into the past...it ranks as the world's oldest surviving civilization. It is this ancestry which is recalled in what some people term the world's greatest architectural achievement -- the Great Wall. Completed about 200 b.c. to protect China, the Wall lies like a fossilized dragon slithering across two thousand miles over the peaks and gorges of China's vast terrain. In Chinese custom, another dragon is kept very much alive -- the mythical dragon of the Chinese New Year, which is an ancient symbol of power, fertility and well-being. The nation's crowded, narrow streets are alive with the activity of daily trade. In fact, ever since the times of Marco Polo, China has been active in international trade and famous for her spices, teas, silk and porcelain. Although modern China has changed tremendously, the life of the peasant has changed little over the centuries. Farmers still plant crops the same way their ancestors did, using buffalo to ready the flooded rice paddies. China is also world-renowned as the only remaining natural refuge for the lovable Panda. A nation proud of its ancient heritage, China has grown to become a respected world power. Image Size: 14.25 x 12.25 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 15 in. Unframed. (B08040)

Chris Calle (B. 1961) "1920s - Babe Ruth" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Celebrate the Century Series 32c Babe Ruth stamp issued May 28, 1998. One of the greatest athletes of the 20th century, Babe Ruth bombarded the world of baseball, breaking and setting many records in his career. Ruth was instrumental in changing the game's playing style from the one-base-at-a-time tactic of bunting, stealing and short-hitting, to the get-it-all-in-one-swing thrill of the long ball. Born on February 6, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland, George Herman Ruth learned to play baseball while living at St. Mary's Industrial School. He became the school's star catcher and pitcher, while also playing for local amateur and semi-pro teams. In 1914, Ruth began his professional career with the Baltimore Orioles, a member of the International League. It was with the Orioles that Ruth acquired his nickname "Babe" and immediately established himself as a skillful pitcher. Later that season, he joined the Boston Red Sox of the American League. Although he was one of the League's best left-handed pitchers, Ruth was soon moved to the outfield because of his power hitting. Between 1920 and 1934, the "Sultan of Swat" played for the New York Yankees, breaking the major-league home run record in three consecutive years (1919-1921) and walloping an amazing 60 home runs in the 1927 season. Ruth led the American League in home runs for 12 years, hitting a lifetime total of 714, a major league record that remained unbroken until 1974. Image Size: 18.25 x 12.25 in. Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "1900s - Immigration, Statue of Liberty" Signed lower right. Original Painting/Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Celebrate the Century Series 32c Immigrants Arrive stamp issued February 3, 1998. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." The poignant words of American poet Emma Lazarus' sublime poem, The New Colossus, inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, reflect America's attitude toward the millions of immigrants that landed on Ellis Island during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the nation's largest port of entry, the island received nearly three-fourths of all immigrants during its 40 years of full operation. Ellis Island received as many as 5,000 people a day, with the peak year for immigration occurring in 1907 when 1.3 million immigrants arrived. Most of America's immigrants between 1905 and 1907 were Russian Jews, Italians and people from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Ellis Island's facilities included dormitories to accommodate 1,500 people, kitchens, a laundry, recreation rooms and a special ferry service to the mainland. Most immigrants remained at Ellis Island for a short time, while waiting for their papers to be approved and until their families' arrival on later ships. Some were detained in quarantine for health checks. The massive immigration during the early 20th century helped to establish America as a melting pot of many cultures, providing people from all over the world with a new beginning. Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "1960s - The Vietnam War" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Celebrate the Century Series 33c The Vietnam War stamp issued September 17, 1999. What would become America's most unpopular war began with a seemingly small and muddled incident in the Gulf of Tonkin on the afternoon of August 2, 1964. The U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet destroyer Maddox was patrolling the South China sea off Vietnam when three North Vietnamese PT boats appeared to launch an attack. Crusader jets from the carrier Ticonderoga came to the Maddox's aid, sinking one North Vietnamese boat and crippling another. After a second alleged attack on the Maddox two nights later, President Lyndon Johnson pressed Congress for the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, allowing punitive air strikes against North Vietnam. The resolution was quickly passed, beginning a war that ultimately would cost over one million lives -- including more than 58,000 Americans. Although the U.S. Government constantly assured its citizens that America was winning, the 1968 Tet offensive led by communist general Vo Nguyen Giap proved otherwise. Despite the fact that the Vietcong suffered heavy casualties and were driven out of Saigon and other cities by the U.S. Army, the Johnson administration was dealt a fatal blow in an election year. One month after the Tet offensive, Johnson stopped bombing most of North Vietnam, called for the opening of peace negotiations, and announced that he would not run for re-election. R.G. Finney (Wyoming, B. 1941) "Bengal Tiger" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c Bengal Tiger mint stamp issued March 8, 1997. The tiger is the largest member of the cat family, with a mature male standing over three feet tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 500 pounds. Despite its size, formidable strength and ferocity, the tiger is a wary creature that lives a solitary existence in jungles or forests. This caution is justified since six of the eight tiger subspecies are today either extinct or endangered. Once extending from Turkey to China, the tiger's range is now reduced to parts of India, Manchuria and Southeast Asia. Of all big cats, the tiger seems to have taken the strongest hold on mans imagination. This is demonstrated in such disparate expressions as the famous poem by William Blake that wonders at the creature's "fearful symmetry," and in the language of mountain people in northeastern China for whom the terms for tiger and God are synonymous. Overall Size: 12 x 12 in. Unframed. (B15292)

Robert Seabeck (Wyoming, B. 1945) "1929 Model a Station Wagon" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60c 1929 Model A Station Wagon stamp issued June 4, 1996. By the beginning of 1929, Ford Motor Company was producing enough Model A's to meet the high customer demand. External door handles were available for the first time, and brighter colors and trim were available. America was prosperous and set a record-breaking year in its demand for cars. One million Model A's were built by February 1929; and two million by July 1929. Like the Model T, the Model A varied in type and body style, and included pickups, mail trucks, ambulances and fire engines. Prior to introducing its own station wagon in 1929, Ford Motor Company had supplied the Model A chassis to aftermarket manufacturers to install a station wagon body type. In January 1929, using the Model A platform, Ford manufactured the first mass produced station wagon. These partially wooden Model A's were built by Murray Corporation of America from maple/birch subassemblies supplied by Ford's northern Michigan lumbermills. These unique vehicles were also known as "woody wagons" and sold for $650. Image Size: 6.5 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 15 x 22.25 in. Unframed. (B15417)

Skip Whitcomb (American, B. 1946) "Summer Garden Flowers - Lily" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 29c Lily stamp issued April 28, 1994. Included in the Liliaceae family are about 250 genera and more than 3,700 species. In addition to a bevy of beautiful flowers, this group also contains onions, asparagus and yams. However, the true, garden-variety Lilies are from the genus Lilium. This category is typified by bulbous plants with leafy stems and large blooms, such as the Tiger Lily. A lovely species characterized by fiery-gold petals flecked with deep purple, this plant has been grown for centuries in China, Korea and Japan for its edible roots. In America, Tiger Lilies fill gardens throughout the summer months. Another cultivated species is the popular Easter Lily. A native of Japan, this variety bears fragrant, trumpet-shaped blooms of pure white. Lilium speciosum, also indigenous to Japan, is distinguished by white blossoms speckled with crimson. This stunning species emits a heavy perfume as well. Since the 1830s, when English nurseryman Henry Groom began hybridizing Lilies, gardeners have had a wealth of varieties from which to choose. Today, by producing these flowers under carefully-controlled conditions, hybridizers can now offer the public a wide array of high-quality, virus-free bulbs. Image Size: 15.25 x 13 in. Skip Whitcomb (American, B. 1946) "Summer Garden Flowers - Rose" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 29c Rose stamp issued April 28, 1994. "When the sea created the beautiful, dew-sparkling Venus . . . the earth, in its part, gave birth to this lovely plant, a new masterpiece of nature . . . majestic on her thorny column, this immortal flower." One of the earliest known descriptions of the Rose was given in this ode written by the Greek poet Anacreon during the 5th century B.C. And fossilized specimens formed millions of years ago further attest to this flower's lengthy existence. It has been theorized that the Rose originated in central Asia and eventually spread eastward to North America and west to Asia Minor and Europe. In fact, a number of species that were grown centuries ago continue to appear in modern gardens. In America, as well as in many other countries worldwide, Rose exhibitions and competitions give amateur rosarians ample opportunities to learn more about their favorite flower and perfect their growing skills. One estimate revealed that more than 50 million Americans enjoy cultivating Roses and that these gardeners purchase 100 million Rose plants annually. In addition to their beauty, these popular blooms are also used to decorate windbreaks. Climbing varieties are known to quickly cover walls and thrive in conditions where more delicate plants cannot. Regardless of its use, the time-honored Rose continues to be the centerpiece in gardens all over the world. Image Size: 15.25 x 13 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14713)

Stanley Paine (British, B. 1934) "Edinburgh Mail Coach" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 16p Edinburgh Mail Coach stamp issued July 31, 1984. From the start, the watchword of the Royal Mail has always been the same: that the post must get through. And perhaps this has never been realized so well as in the fateful winter of 1831. It was February, and snow and cold raged as the Edinburgh Mail Coach left on its route. At Moffat, the Coach and horses became stuck in a drift. All efforts at freeing the snowbound vehicle seemd futile. In accordance with their duties as servants of the Royal Post, the coachman and guard mounted the horses, the all-important mails flung over their shoulders in letter bags. They took with them two postboys and headed across the bleak, snow-covered country, hoping to reach the next stage safely. The passengers were left behind to fend for themselves. But, as the little mounted band went on, they realized the snow was too deep even for their horses. They decided to send them back with the postboys, the two men continuing on, on foot, carrying the heavy mail bags with them. They never reached their destination. The next day, the bags were found lashed to a post beside the road, the men's bodies were dug out of a snowdrift some time later. The two, James MacGeorge and John Goodfellow, exemplify the honor felt by Britain's early postal employees and the sacrifice and devotion they were willing to impart to the sacred trust of delivering mail in their beloved homeland. Tim O'Toole (American, B. 1949) "Tanzania Wildlife" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Tanzania Mint Stamp of the World Panel in 1987. Tanzania is an African nation found on the eastern coast of the continent ... and the country exhibits a remarkable array of cultures which today live and work side by side. The earliest clue of man in Tanzania dates back into history one and a fourth million years -- rock paintings, mounds and other prehistoric evidence can be found in the Olduvai Gorge of a manlike creature called australopithecus. In recent history, Arab traders -- intent on profiting from the slave trade -- settled on the coast of Tanzania. Later, Asians came to Tanzania ... and today these groups live alongside the natives of the nation. Most of the natives of Tanzania speak Swahili ... the national language and perhaps the most useful language in all of Africa. Settlers coming to Tanzania brought with them their religions and customs ... and although a majority of the tribal peoples practice animism -- a belief that all things in nature have spirits there are some Christians. Sunni Muslems live on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar. Zanzibar has been famous through the ages for its spices, especially cloves -- and it remains so today. Both the islands and mainland of Tanzania have some of Africa's most exciting wildlife. Mount Kilimanjaro -- the tallest mountain on the African continent -- towers over the famous Serengeti plains of northern Tanzania, where a multitude of African wildlife thrives. Gazelles, elephants and crocodiles are just a few of the animals to be found in the rivers and plains of Tanzania. Image Size: 27 x 21.75 in. Overall Size: 30 x 24 in. Unframed. (B10828)

Tom Lydon (American, B. 1944) "Timberline Lodge" Signed lower left. Original Chalk drawing on Construction Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This piece is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 25c Francis Ouimet stamp issued June 13, 1988. Francis Ouimet was one of the best amateur golfers of his time. At 20, he won the U.S. Open, the first amateur ever to do so. The game was an exciting one, as Ouimet tied with two leading English professionals. And, in the playoff, it was Ouimet who won the game. Interestingly, he never went professional, but made his living as a stockbroker. In his spare time, Ouimet gathered trophies in the U.S. Amateur Championship, the French Amateur Golf Championship, the Western Golf Association Amateur Championship, and in the American-versus-England Walker Cup matches. His skill was so impressive that he was also elected to the Golf Hall of Fame and became the first American elected captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews, Scotland. Ouimet also founded a caddie scholarship fund, which awarded some $400,000 in scholarships before his death in 1967. In addition to golfing, Francis Ouimet also enjoyed stamp collecting. 1995 Jaguar XJS Celebration Convertible Transmission: automaticMileage:105671975 saw the launch of the Jaguar XJS. In a year that Margaret Thatcher was made the leader of the Conservative Party and petrol was 70p per gallon, the new grand tourer from Jaguar was introduced as the replacement for the iconic E-Type. During an astonishing build run of 21 years, 115,413 units were produced by the Coventry manufacturer at their world famous Browns Lane factory. The final, more aerodynamic version of the XJS was introduced in 1991. At the same time, the car benefitted from a revision to the rear brakes; they were now fitted with outboard rear disc brakes, instead of the more complicated inboard items on previous models. With a more efficient engine and subtle design changes, this version was available until production ceased in 1996.Originally registered on 1st June 1995, this XJS convertible is finished in Turquoise with Cream leather interior. The first registered keeper was the supplying dealer and when the car changed hands, she was lovingly looked after by the second owner before changing hands within the same family. Only one service stamp is in the service book in May 2004 when the mileage was 10,083 although clearly this Jaguar has been maintained to a high standard, she is unmarked and appears to be in totally original condition. Shortly after the service in 2004, the car was taken off the road and put into a professional storage facility. The current owner and vendor lightly recommissioned the XJS in 2016 and has covered some 500 miles during his stewardship. Supplied with a V5C registration document and a full years MoT test certificate, the Jaguar XJS Celebration signalled the end of an era. Low mileage original examples are becoming increasingly rare and highly sought after.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

A SPARE ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL RUGBY UNION JERSEY BADGE CIRCA 1908 with embroidered English rose from the archive John Guy Gilberne Birkett (1884-1967)Of rectangular form, 13 x 11cms and with fine cotton embroidery in seven colours. Superb condition. On the reverse there appears to be a faded red stamp with a broad-arrow and a number ‘2’ with script in a banner below within an impressed outline of a heart. We are unsure of the purpose of this ‘spare’ rose and have discussed various theories such as whether the broad-arrow on the back has military connotations or whether the heart may have a connection with the heart-shaped design on his Colvin-House School rugby jersey. Or whether simply it was sent to John as a replacement or spare badge from the RFU. We do know that during the first part of the twentieth century England badges were sent to players to stitch on themselves. However, this badge does not appear to have been stitched to a jersey. Regardless, it is a rare and splendid object, and the embroidery is of high quality.Provenance: the vendors of the Birkett Sporting Archive are the great grandsons of J G G Birkett (1884-1967), and the great-great-grandsons of Reg BirkettSee our digital catalogue for this collection with further images here https://bit.ly/2PixOMn
