Flegel, Georg1563 Olmütz - 1638 Frankfurt/Main Breakfast of Grapes, Nuts, Chestnuts and Bread. Oil on oak. 38,7 x 48,6cm. Framed. Verso: panel maker`s stamp. Provenance: Private estate, Stuttgart. Assessment from Dr. Hana Seifertová on November 12th, 2004. Assessment from Dr. Anne-Dore Ketelsen-Volkhardt on January 24th, 2011. "This image of a laid table of snacks belongs to the much admired themes of Georg Flegel, who belongs to the first specialists in still lifes of the 17th Century. He varied the so-called breakfasts or snacks (Dutch Ontbijtje) throughout his oeuvre in different ways and often in many of his editions. It is in this realm that our image of Breakfast with Grapes, Nuts, Chestnuts and Bread belongs to. It represents a small snack, one which only the well-to-do society could enjoy: beside bread and butter on a white and blue decorated plate are the secretly depicted grapes in a silver bowl; white wine in a pitcher, a glass cup produced in Germany, and finally the hazelnuts displayed in an expensive Chinese bowl. Chestnuts and medlars, as well as half of a lemon (an expensive fruit at the time) are displayed in two simple tin cans. Beside the lemon is a knife with an ornamental handle. This entire image can be seen as a representation of the dining at the time." (Dr. Seifertová)."After first glance regarding the painting, the motifs and the composition, as well as the format, the image has large similarities with two other Breakfast still lifes from Georg Flegel 1566 - 1638: Breakfast with Grapes, Crayfish and Bread, oil on wood, 39 x 47cm, Monogrammed on the blade of the knife, Brotmuseum, Ulm; Large Breakfast with Fruit, oil on canvas, 40 x 48cm, private collection. Due to these similarities, it is in my opinion that "Breakfast with Grapes, Nutes and Bread" can be attributed to Georg Flegel." (Dr. Ketelsen-Volkhardt).

WWII – Hitler – Mein Kampf the excessively rare English translation produced by the Nazis. This copy bearing the stamp of the Stalag 357 Prisoner of War Camp. We have been unable to trace another copy of this version of Mein Kampf on the market at the present time. The fact that it has been stamped with the mark of a POW camp could indicate that it was intended as a means of propaganda to turn gullible British POWs towards the Nazi cause. Stalag 357 was famous for the ‘long march’ when in March 1945 after the allies have crossed the Rhine 12 000 POWs were forced to march to a ‘destination unknown’ in columns of 2 000 strong. The men were hungry cold and tired out and Warrant Officer James ‘Dixie’ Deans who had been elected as the POWs leader finally persuaded the German command to let him go to find the allied advancing troops – he eventually reached the allied lines and thus Stalag 357 became one of the first to be liberated – though not before the RAF thinking the columns of men were German troops had opened fire on them killing 60. This particularly edition of Mein Kampf is considered of such rarity that only one other copy is known to exist. Please refer to : www.hitler-library.org/Mein-Kampf-Collectors-Guide.pdf

Helen Madeline McKie (1889-2004) was educated at Tiffin Girls School, Kingston on Thames, and Lambeth School of Art, where she studied composition and painting under Philip Connard. She then became an illustrator and permanent member of staff to `Bystander` Magazine from 1915 to 1929. She was also a contributing artist to The Graphic, Sphere, Autocar and Queen publications. McKie became well known for her drawings of military figures during World War One and corresponded with soldiers in active service across the world. In 1931, she paid a visit to the Brown House, Munich, when on the strength of a letter of introduction to Hitler, she was allowed to sketch Nazi officials. During World War II, she was commissioned by Lord Lloyd to make sketches of Navy personnel and warships. In 1943, she painted `The Upper War Room` at Admiralty, Whitehall for presentation to Sir Winston Churchill, who was in the picture. She produced commissioned work for the Southern Railway, mural designs for amongst others, the Ritz Hotel in London, several Butlins holiday camps, Ford motorcars, the French government Tourist Office and Selfridges. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds an archive of her papers, drawings, photographs, and ephemera, the gift of John Fraser, her nephew. Among the papers is an illustrated article from The Graphic, concerning McKie`s sketches of Nazi officials (1931) and it seems likely that the two signed drawings here present with Graphic stamps to verso were used for that article. Nonetheless, this remains an extraordinary and unique artistic record of Hitler`s Nazi Party Headquarters by a British woman artist. Provenance: Mark Dineley, well-known arms and armour collector and bibliophile, by descent. (1)
