Francis Davison, British 1919-1984 - Untitled (white buildings), c.1960-63; collaged paper on card, signed on the reverse 'Francis Davis', with artist' stamp no.A75', 59.5 x 49 cm (ARR) Exhibited: Hayward Gallery, 'Francis Davison: Paper collages', 10th February - 17th April 1983 (according to the exhibition label attached to the reverse of the frame) Note: at the invitation from who would be his lifelong friend Patrick Heron, Davison went to St Ives in 1946 where he met future wife, Margaret Mellis (see lot 181). After some years of painting, he turned to collage in 1952, using only found papers, which he more often tore than cut. He did not title his works, wanting the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the work. His work was largely overlooked in his lifetime, save for an exhibition in 1983 at the Hayward Gallery, in which the present lot was include.
Margaret Mellis, Scottish 1914-2009 - Small White Relief, 1970; painted wooden relief, signed, titled and dated on the reverse 'Margaret Mellis White Relief Nov 1970' and with hand-numbered artist's stamp 'M Mellis 7.0762', 37.8 x 37.7 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Austin Desmond Gallery, London; private collection Exhibited: Piers Art Centre, Orkney, 'Margaret Mellis: Constructions, Paintings, Reliefs', 8th May - 10th June 1982 (according to the label attached to the reverse, which states the date of the work as 1971) Note: Margaret Mellis was a pioneer of abstraction from the 1940s in Britain, creating a highly innovative body of work that pushed the boundaries between painting and sculpture, always utilising a unique approach to colour. In the present work from the 1970s, the artist plays with light and shadow, in her use of relief and brilliant white. While artists as diverse as Mary Martin and Ben Nicholson were exploring similar techniques during the same period, through her distinct curved forms Mellis managed create a distinctly sensitive response to abstraction. Mellis played an important role in the history of Modernism in St. Ives during the Second World War, her home with first husband Adrian Stokes providing a focal point for artists including Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. Mellis has been subject to major museum shows across the UK, including at City Art Centre, Edinburgh in 1997, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich in 2008 and more recently at Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne in 2022.

The present work is stylistically similar to a portrait made by Duncan Grant of Henrietta c.1960 that most recently sold at Christie's in 2018. Eileen Hose was Beaton's secretary and inherited many of his work upon his death. She bequeathed a large number of items to museums including the V & A, London.

An early 19th century (1802-1819) artillery gunner's perpendicular / spirit level by 'BERGE' (Matthew), London from the Napoleonic war era. Makers mark to body and broad arrow British army acceptance stamp to reverse and box. This new design was introduced as it incorporated a spirit level as a new feature which replaced the earlier use of a plumb line. Comes in its original mahogany brass hinged lidded box. Box measures 17cm x 13cm x 3.5cm.
