Here, in this painting from 1959, the material and painting are at the centre of his creative work as their own, meaningful expression, entirely in the spirit of Informel. Nevertheless, the strongly graphic element allows some fascinating discoveries: the viewer cannot help but unite the black lines lying on the white surface and resembling a cipher into a figurative construct. The line construct evokes associations and reveals the contours of a human being. Is there a person standing on skis in a wintery white landscape? At the same time, Schumacher makes the artistic moment, the creative process, visible in the roughness of his partly broken and sublime surfaces. The artist shares testing and experimenting with new materials, processes and techniques throughout his entire oeuvre with the viewer. It is not unusual for him to choose titles for his works that are later invented, full of associations, that sometimes originate from his imagination or are based on real places or persons and names. So auch in seinem Gemälde "Pause" aus dem Jahr 2007. Der Raum bleibt nicht näher bestimmbar und wird dominiert von sowohl konkreten als auch sich auflösenden Formen und Farbsplittern. Durch die sich scheinbar verschiebende Perspektive, versucht der Betrachter die einzelnen Fragmente architektonisch zusammenzusetzen, scheitert jedoch, obwohl das Werk durch den im unteren Drittel definierten Horizont eine unleugbare Tiefe und Stabilität besitzt. Durch die Auflösung des Ganzen in einen irrealen Raum, erscheinen die Fragmente dieser eigenwilligen Konstruktion wie eine virtuelle Realität, die den Betrachter zwischen Raumauflösung und Gegenständlichkeit wanken lässt.Die Überlagerung von Architektur und Natur in explosionsartigen Farbsplittern lassen die Werke des Künstlers schnelllebig und instabil wirken. Durch die Kompositionen wird der Blick in unterschiedliche Richtungen gelenkt und kommt nicht zur Ruhe. Dies kann man als eine Kritik an unserer Gesellschaft und Hinterfragung der Zeitwahrnehmung des Betrachters verstehen. Gekonnt drapiert er den Körper, auf einem Stein in sich gekehrt, in die Landschaft und umgibt diesen mit Bäumen, Schilf und Wasser. Das am natürlichen Vorbild orientierte Kolorit macht Muellers Manier unvergleichlich gegenüber der expressiven Farbgebung seiner Malerkollegen. So lassen auch die klassische Komposition und die weichen Konturen vielmehr einen Vergleich zu den Zeichnern des 19 Jahrhunderts herstellen. Trotz der in schnellen Bögen geschwungenen Linien und dem immer wieder herausstechenden Blau, welches die Konturen verstärkt, entsteht eine wunderbare Ruhe in der gemalten Fläche. In Salvador Dalí findet er einen Gleichgesinnten und so hören die beiden oft während der "Signier-Stunden" im New Yorker oder Pariser Hotelzimmer die Musik des deutschen Komponisten. Wohl bei einer dieser Sitzungen entsteht die Idee zu einer Zusammenarbeit für den Radierzyklus "Tristan und Isolde". In der 21-teiligen Suite zu den Texten von André Mary gestaltet Dalí eine seiner vielen Interpretationen der populären Geschichte aus dem 12. Jahrhundert über Romantik und Tragödie. Reinz, der 1964 erstmals die Festspiele in Bayreuth besucht und dort die Familie Wagner kennenlernt, durfte zur Eröffnung der Eremitage 1969 eine Ausstellung mit Dalís Zyklus zeigen. Sie ist die erste Ausstellung von weiteren, die Reinz während der folgenden Festspiele einrichtet. Jahrhunderts und seine neusachlichen Werke aus den 1920er Jahren zu den begehrtesten auf dem internationalen Kunstmarkt. Neben George Grosz und Max Beckmann hat Dix die Stilrichtung der Neuen Sachlichkeit weitestgehend mitgeprägt. Die Kriegserlebnisse des Ersten Weltkriegs werden für Dix Auslöser für seine sozialkritischen Bilder. Die vorliegende Arbeit entstand 1922 - dem Jahr als Otto Dix sein Studium als Meisterschüler von Heinrich Nauen und Wilhelm Herberholz an der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie aufnahm und sich dort dem Kreis um die Förderin und Galeristin Johanna Ey ("Mutter Ey") anschließt.Das Aquarell zeigt deutlich eine um 1920 vollzogene Hinwendung zur zunehmend realistischen Malweise mit der Dix das Wahrhaftige widergeben möchte, schnörkellos und mit dem Mut zur Darstellung der hässlichen Seite des Menschen und des alltäglichen Lebens, ohne dabei in die Abstraktion zu verfallen, die er stets ablehnt. In schnellen und flüchtigen Strichen skizziert der Künstler eine dichte Kneipenszene. In einer engen Figurenstaffage sieht man links im Bild einen Mann am Tisch sitzend und daneben steht eine Frau. An der Theke sitzt ein Mann mit gesenktem Kopf. Im Hintergrund die Bardame und diverse nicht detailliert ausgeführte Figuren. Die Köpfe der Männer - hoch-rot akzentuiert - geben einen Hinweis darauf, schon länger hier zu sitzen. Obwohl eine Kneipe ein geselliger Ort sein sollte, wirken die Figuren hier im blau-braunen Dunst der Lokalität einsam und allein. Jeder für sich. Man scheint sich nicht für den anderen zu interessieren. Man ist beschäftigt mit sich und dem eigenen Leid. Die gewählte Farbpalette der wässrig ineinander verlaufenden Aquarellfarben verdichtet die Kneipen-Atmosphäre und verstärkt den Eindruck des individuellen Leids, dem man sich als Betrachter nicht entziehen kann.
