1964 Triumph 649cc T120 BonnevilleRegistration no. PRX 265BFrame no. T120DU 10409Engine no. T120DU 10409 RS (see text)Capitalising on its record-breaking success at the Utah salt flats, Triumph introduced a new twin-carburettor sports roadster in September 1958: the Bonneville. Unitary construction of engine and gearbox was already a feature of the 350 and 500 twins though, and this innovation duly appeared on the 650s in 1963. This collectible T120 Bonneville dates from 1964, by which time most of the handling problems associated with the earlier versions' twin down-tube frame had been rectified by the successor's single-tube design. This nice example was purchased by the vendor in May 1981. Imported and first registered in the UK in June 1976 it now displays a period correct 'B' number plate denoting its 1964 vintage. Last taxed for the road in 2018 the motorcycle will require recommissioning. The history file contains various old style V5's and a receipt for servicing work in the early 1990s. It should be noted, the engine is a post-1969 production replacement unit, with a non-factory stamp to match the frame number.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 481

1936 Harley-Davidson 74ci VLD 'Police'Registration no. 594 YUHFrame no. 36VLD4859 (See text)Engine no. 36VLD4859• First registered in the UK in 2012• Present family ownership since 2012• An older restoration• Requires recommissioningThe 'flat head' (sidevalve) Harley-Davidson VL 'Big Twin' was announced in July 1929 as a replacement for the inlet-over-exhaust 'pocket valve' twins that had been in production since 1911. The twin headlamps, round toolbox and Klaxon horn were carried over from its immediate predecessor, but nearly all of the rest of the bike was new. Harley's 1930 brochure described the new 74ci machine as 'standing head and shoulders above all comers, with such startling new features as a 20% more powerful motor with Ricardo removable heads, interchangeable wheels, bigger tires, drop-centre rims, lower riding position, greater road clearance, automatic increase of generator output, drop forged forks, 100% stronger frame, theft proof lock, dual front drive chain, improved clutch, and many other features making the 1930 Big Twin the greatest motorcycle value ever offered.' Despite its maker's evident enthusiasm, the model V was far from an instant success. More massively built and heavier than its predecessor, the V lacked top-end power to such an extent that the first examples were recalled for an extensive engine redesign. A larger crankcase accommodating heavier flywheels did the trick and, its problems solved, the 74ci 'flat head' went on to win the hearts of Harley enthusiasts everywhere. This example's 'VLD' nomenclature indicates that it left the factory as a generator-equipped model fitted with high-compression pistons. Imported by the previous owner (date unknown), the machine was first registered in the UK in 2012. It was in its current restored condition when purchased by the vendor's late relative that year, but has been unused for many years since. An older restoration, the Harley features painted cylinder heads; California Highway Patrol transfers to the tank; first aid box; fire extinguisher; crash bars; and a Corbyn 100mph speedometer, while there is some light surface corrosion to the brightwork. It is not known when the machine last ran, but it was last taxed to April 2013. Recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent will be required before it returns to the road (the engine turns over, with compression). Sold strictly as viewed, the machine is offered with a V5C document; expired MoT (2013); DVLA correspondence; and an AMCA 'Junior First' award (date unknown). It should be noted the frame number is not a factory Harley-Davidson stamp (Harleys of this period did not have frame numbers) and is believed to be a DVLA-issued VIN to facilitate its UK registration. Key in on/off switch.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 432

2020 Ducati 1,103cc Panigale V4Registration no. GV69 DJUFrame no. ZDMDA00AAKB008424Engine no. ZDM1100W4*009275*• Two owners from new• Present ownership since February 2023• Custom paintwork (applied 2023)By the dawn of the 21st Century, Ducati had been keeping faith with the v-twin engine for its sports roadsters for some 30 years, so it was more a question of 'when' rather 'if' they would move on from this type of power plant, despite its having formed the bedrock of the Italian firm's model range for so long. And it can have surprised nobody when that replacement turned out to be a 90-degree desmodromic V4, as that engine configuration had been used by Ducati's MotoGP bikes since the coming of the premier class's four-stroke era in 2002. Introduced in 2018, the Panigale V4 took its name from the Borgo Panigale district of Bologna, home to the Ducati factory. The Panigale was launched in two engine capacities: 1,103cc and 1,000cc, the latter being necessary to comply with Superbike racing regulations. The engine's architecture was closely based on that of the racer, even going so far as to retain the MotoGP bike's backwards-rotating crankshaft, while, unlike the preceding Panigale v-twins which employed the engine as a stressed chassis member, there was a partial aluminium perimeter frame. Ducati being Ducati, the electronics were, of course, state of the art. This Panigale V4 had only one owner before our vendor purchased it on 2nd February 2023. The machine was serviced by Moto Rapido before the first owner traded it in for a new Ducati (date and mileage in service book). The vendor rode the Ducati for only 4 miles before he decided to treat it to some custom paintwork in the Italian national colours of red, white and green, which was carried out by Carisma Custom Paint in Colchester. The repainted parts were ready in early June and the Panigale shows a total of 24,660 miles at the time of cataloguing/photography. The standard control levers, clear screen, pillion seat tail section, and footrests are included in the sale, and the machine also comes with a single-sided paddock stand. The engine has been started and run up to full operating temperature every 14 days, and the battery kept on a trickle charger at all times. However, at 69 years of age and having been riding for over 54 years, he finds the Panigale too much for him. There is also a video of the machine running, available to view on the Bonhams website.Accompanying documentation includes a V5C Registration Certificate; current MoT (expires 14.02.2024); original 2023 Moto Rapido Ltd sales invoice; motorcycle service sheets; and the black leather Ducati wallet containing the service booklet (last service stamp 3.10.22), owner's manual, and roadside assistance program. Two keys present.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 287

1961 BSA 499cc 'DBD34' Gold StarRegistration no. 730 KYBFrame no. CB.32.110291 (restamped, see text)Engine no. DBD.34.GS.5911This Gold Star has belonged to the same owner since 1975 when it was bought for £250 (bill of sale on file). The Goldie would have left the factory in Clubman's trim, and there is a copy of the engine brake test sheet on file annotated to the effect that the machine was despatched to J Difazio in Frome, Somerset on 3rd January 1961, 'J (Jack) Difazio' being the pioneering advocate of hub-centre steering. At some point the frame was changed and restamped (using a non-factory font) with the original number but with an additional '1' ahead of the actual number, which should read 'CB.32.10291' as recorded in the V5C. It should also be noted that the engine has a correct factory stamp but gearbox stamping is non-factory. The numbers on the documents (frame, engine and registration) all tie up. Kept as part of a private museum collection, and beautifully presented, the machine displays a tax disc that expired in September 1986 and will require recommissioning before returning to the road. It comes with a most extensive file of documentation to include an old-style continuation logbook (issued 1975); photocopies of previous V5s; a current V5C; restoration photographs; and a substantial quantity of bills for parts and services.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Asibi IdoFive Small Bowls all bear stamp 'A.I' and 'Abuja' in Arabic (to the bases)glazed stoneware 4.5 x 15 x 15cm (1 3/4 x 5 7/8 x 5 7/8in). (all measure the same)(5)Footnotes:Honoured by being selected to present President Azikiwe with one of her pots upon his visit to the Training Centre and further to her invitation to accompany Michael O'Brien (who worked at the Training Centre following Cardew) on a visitation to Britain in 1989, it is clear that Asibi Ido was a potter held in high regard within the Training Centre. Meticulously decorated with each dish possessing its own individuality, it appears that the 5 works were thrown, given Cardew's introduction to the centre of the pottery wheel, it could be argued that the sgraffito marks on the work were completed when the dishes were still spinning and clay still wet, given their precision. Made in the darker clay of Body 49 base and a black slip, the combination of the two along with the addition of the ridges enables a red-brown pigment to appear along the lines, sealed by what appears to be an Abuja Slip-Glaze. Given the shine of the five dishes, it can be concluded that these dishes were fired under a high heat.BibliographyJohn Edgeler, Michael Cardew and stoneware, continuity and change, (Winchcombe: Cotswolds living Publications, 2008)For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Ibrahim El-Salahi (Sudan, born 1930)I walk in the night with sleepy eyes closed signed 'Salahi' (lower right); inscribed '27' (crossed out)/ 'No, 22'/ 'Series F'' (verso)Indian ink on paper 19.5 x 41cm (7 11/16 x 16 1/8in).Accompanied by an exhibition catalogue, 'Drawings: Ibrahim El Salahi', (Mbari Publications Ibadan, 1962)Footnotes:ProvenanceBought directly from the artist 1963;A private collection.Calligraphic modernism is thematically central to Ibrahim El-Salahi's oeuvre, and indeed to this work. The artist uses text to bridge together his desire to create modern works and his heritage to draw the attention of traditionalists into his work. In the present work, the beautifully fluid lines displaying an abstracted almost animalistic figure are symptomatic of El-Salahi's most iconic works. Paired here with the Arabic sentence to the top of the work, translating to 'I walk in the night with sleepy eyes closed', we see the artist has conflated two forms of aestheticism.'I said to myself, 'Man, let us for a time forget about those archaic concepts of art for art's sake, and that unreal nonsense of the muse and the ivory tower recluse that we read about, and get down to work that might solve our problem.'...I worked like mad, introduced Arabic writing and decorative patters in a corner of my works like a stamp on an envelope, and exhibited some of those works. People recognizing something that they were a bit familiar with, took note and came a bit closer. I gradually spread the lettering with symbols, words from the Qur'an and Sufi poetry over the surface of the picture, mixing it with figurative work. They came closer, showing a greater degree of interest.'El-Salahi was committed to the idea of a wider Muslim aesthetic, acquiring universalism through transnational modernism. During the era of decolonization, the introduction of Islamic discursive inclusion attempts to appeal to the wider community; endeavouring to formulate a sense of unification in modernity.BibliographySalah M.
