A 50-BORE LOW COUNTRIES FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN WITH SOCKET-BAYONET, EARLY 18TH CENTURY with blued Ripoll barrel formed in three stages with turned girdle, a raised brass moulding over the base of the breech, the brass-lined stamp "Coma " (Neue Støckel 189) and swamped muzzle with bayonet lug and the fore-sight set on an engraved brass oval, the barrel tang overlaid with brass and engraved with acanthus leaves, with bevelled lock also overlaid with brass and finely engraved with foliage and a monster`s head scroll within beaded borders (the sear-spring broken), walnut half-stock carved with a series of pronounced raised mouldings (modified from the original full-length within its early period of use), the butt formed with a trap housing the original socket-bayonet, full brass mounts, comprising butt-plate engraved en suite with the lock and fitted with engraved hinged trap-cover released by a spring-stud at the heel, side-plate cast in low relief with a pierced design of acanthus scrolls involving a bust medallion supported by half-figures, bevelled moulded trigger-guard stamped "10" in miniscules on the finial, three faceted baluster ramrod-pipes, escutcheon cast in low relief and centring on a warrior bust medallion, plain brass fore-end cap, original ramrod, and complete with its socket-bayonet made entirely of steel. 109.2 cm; 43 in barrel

A RARE SENIOR OFFICER`S DE-LUXE QUALITY DRESS SABRE WITH HILT AND SCABBARD MOUNTS OF PARCEL-GILT SILVER, BADEN OR WÜRTTEMBERG, THIRD QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY with curved single-edged flat blade etched over its length in imitation of a damascus pattern, etched with laurel branches and gilt trophies-of-war on both sides, enclosing the figures of Mars and Venus etched and gilt on respective sides, and etched and gilt with a striped pattern along the back-edge, silver stirrup-hilt cast in relief, formed of a knuckle-guard with two oval bars branched diagonally across the outer face, with the quillon terminal formed as a dog`s head cast in the round, a pair of langets, the outer langet decorated with a silver-gilt lion mask in high relief, back-piece also of silver-gilt and rising to an eagle`s head pommel, and ebony grip carved with a scale pattern, in its original leather-covered wooden scabbard with parcel-gilt silver mounts cast in relief with subjects en suite with the blade, the locket involving the figure of Victory, and the middle-band applied with a fluted plaque carrying the cipher WR crowned, silver maker`s stamp of Sick of Stuttgart; complete with its portepee incorporating the black, white and red Federal colours 74.5 cm; 29¼ in blade The cypher on the middle-band of the scabbard is possibly that of the 2. Badisches Grenadier Regiment, Kaiser Wilhelm I. The depiction of the head and crown of the king on this seal is as seen on the English silver coinage issued from 1279 AD; the king depicted here is likely to be of the period Edward I to Edward III. A `chess piece` type stamp seal with hexagonal-section shank and trefoil loop above; intaglio design of a robed standing female figure holding a cross with head inclined towards a robed kneeling figure praying in a field of trefoils; to the border the Lombardic script legend `*SC HELENA.PRO.ME.ORA` (Saint Helena pray for me); accompanied by an impression and collector`s relevant data cards. 11 grams, 26mm (1"). An important London collection of ecclesiastical seals, acquired since the 1970s; found Firle, East Sussex, UK. Saint Helena (circa 250-330 AD) was first wife to Constantius Chlorus (Constantius I, emperor 305-306 AD) and mother of Constantine the Great (Constantine I, the first Christian emperor, 307-337 AD); she was a native of Bithynia. She became a Christian after the Edict of Milan in 313 AD and was prominent in the building of several basilicas and many churches in the Holy Land; she is chiefly associated with the `discovery` of the True Cross near Mount Calvary and is usually depicted in imperial garb, holding a cross to commemorate this; her sarcophagus remains to this day in the Vatican Museum; her day of commemoration is 18th August. Very fine condition.

An important London collection of ecclesiastical seals, acquired since the 1970s; found Blyth, Northumberland, UK. Saint Peter the Apostle (died circa 64 AD) was born Simon, son of John and, with his brother Andrew, became a disciple; the seal inscription refers to Matthew 16:18-19 Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam, `You are Peter (the rock) and on this rock I shall build my church`; his commemoration day is 29th June. Extremely fine condition.

A stamp seal with strap and loop to the reverse; intaglio design of St. Andrew facing, tied to a saltire cross; to the border the Lombardic script legend `S` WILI`.CADELLANI+ANDREA:PIE` (seal of William Cadellan, Andrew [the pious?]); accompanied by an impression and collector`s relevant data cards. 11 grams, 26mm (1"). An important London collection of ecclesiastical seals, acquired since the 1970s; found Dalton-le-Dale, County Durham, UK. Saint Andrew (died 1st century AD), brother of St Peter, was a disciple of St John the Baptist before folowing Christ; his relics were stolen from Constantinople in 1210 and now rest at Amalfi; he is the patron saint of Scotland, Russia and Greece and he is usually depicted on or with the saltire cross of his martyrdom (sometimes holding a fish), said to have been at Patras in Achaia; his commemoration day is 30th November.
