Landauer, Lou -- Photogram of oat grass. 1942. Vintage gelatin silver print. 24 x 18 cm. Photographer's estate stamp on the verso.Born in 1897 in Cologne, Lou Levi married Georg Landauer, a prominent Zionist politician, in 1923 after attending the Commercial Academy in Cologne. Her passion for photography led her to the Staatliche Fotoschule in Munich in 1928/29. She continued her photographic studies in Berlin, at the Lette Verein, and in 1934, she immigrated to Palestine with her husband and parents. Lou Landauer worked as a press photographer for the Jüdische Rundschau, still published in Berlin at the time, and later as a photography teacher at the Bezalel Hechadash, the new arts and crafts school in Jerusalem. In 1949, she relocated to the USA, where she pursued a career as an advertising photographer and experimented with the Carbro process before transitioning to an assistant librarian position at the Leo Baeck Institute in New York. – Some light handling marks, corners slightly bumped, light spot in upper right, otherwise in very good condition. Man Ray -- Rayographs. 1924/1928. 2 gelatin silver prints, printed 1980s. 27,8 x 20,8 cm (30,6 x 23,8 cm). Both prints annotated in pencil on verso, one print annotated Man Ray in pencil and with the photographer's studio stamp and one with A.D.A.G.P. Paris stamp, both with Tirage original réalisé par Pierre Gassmann stamp and Foto von einem Fotogramm stamp on the verso . Man Ray's rayographs involved placing objects directly onto photosensitive paper and exposing them to light, resulting in ethereal and often abstract compositions. This technique allowed him to explore the interplay of light and shadow, shape and form, in a way that challenged conventional photography. Offered here are two photographs of Man Ray's photograms made by Pierre Gassmann. The original prints of these works are in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. – Minimal buckling along edges of prints, a few handling marks, otherwise in excellent condition.

Hedda Reidt trained in photography in Munich from 1917 to 1919, studying alongside future cinematographer Willy Zielke and fellow photographer Lotte Jacobi. During her development as a photographer she transitioned from Pictorialism to embracing the New Objectivity style. By 1928, she had established herself as an independent photographer, and her assignments included product photography for diverse clients, such as designers, educational institutions, and the Deutsche Werkstätten. Renowned German photographer and painter Holger Trülzsch collaborated with the internationally celebrated supermodel Vera "Veruschka" Lehndorff to produce a diverse and compelling body of work during the 1970s and 80s. The highlighted pieces are drawn from their collaborative body-art project titled "Trans:figurations." World War II/Displaced Persons -- Photographer: Wolf Schärf. Jewish Displaced Persons camps in Vienna. Circa 1946-1948. 33 vintage ferrotyped gelatin silver prints. Each circa 8,5 x 13,5 cm. Each with photographer's stamp in lower left/right corner.Following World War II, Jewish Displaced Persons (DPs) in Austria and Germany mainly consisted of Holocaust survivors who had been left homeless and stateless due to the war's destructive impact. These individuals were initially accommodated in DP camps, which played a crucial role in offering them essential support, including food, medical care, and educational services. Various organizations, including Jewish relief agencies, worked tirelessly to help DPs recover from the trauma of the Holocaust, reunite with surviving family members, and find a path to a better future. Their ultimate objective was to facilitate the emigration of these survivors to countries like Israel and the United States, where they could rebuild their lives, form new communities, and make valuable contributions to their adopted societies. This transition marked a significant step in their journey towards recovery and resilience. – In very good condition.

They had met through their mutual friend John Linnell who also introduced them to William Blake, a formative influence in the artistic group they were to create with Frederick Calvert, Frederick Tatham and others which became known as the Ancients. Their visionary paintings ran counter-current to the mainstream artistic style of the day and drew much from the Italian primitives. Palmer embraced the sentiments of the group in his personal life as well, wearing his hair long, growing a beard and adopting flowing, 'archaic' clothing. In contrast Richmond, whose career as a fashionable portraitist was gaining ground in London, is shown in Palmer's portrait dressed in the high collar, silk tie and tailored coat of the day, the same attire we see in his self-portrait miniature of 1830 now in the National Portrait Gallery, London (no. 6586). The identification of the present portrait was first put forward by Raymond Lister presumably with that miniature in mind, and it serves as a record both of a friendship and of a particularly productive period in the life of both artists. Richmond was the son of a miniature painter and showed precocious talent which won him a place at the RA schools at the age of 15. He made a number of trips to stay with Palmer at Shoreham in the later 1820s and they formed a close and enduring friendship. He fell in love with Julia Tatham, but having failed to get her father's approval to marry the two eloped to Gretna Green and married the year the present portrait was taken. Later in the 1830s Palmer married Hannah Linnell, John Linnell's daughter and the Palmers and Richmonds travelled to Italy together on a two year painting tour. Although the Ancients disbanded and the artists' painting styles took different directions, Palmer and Richmond remained close friends for life.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A very rare Thomas Bowles South Sea Bubble Stock-jobbing Cards or The Humours of Change Alley playing cards circa 1720, complete set of fifty-two cards with red tax stamp on Ace of Spades, engraved cards with hand coloured hearts and diamonds, plain verso —just over 3 1/2in. (9cm.) height of card (some with worn corners, mainly square, possibly from two sets, Queen of Hearts with staining and fading to speech bubbles, some red pips discoloured) - The South Sea Bubble was the financial collapse of the South Sea Company in 1720. The company was formed to supply slaves to Spanish America.The South Sea Company was formed in 1711 in London and its purpose was to supply 4800 slaves each year for 30 years to the Spanish plantations in Central and Southern America.Britain had secured the rights to supply slaves to Spanish America at the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. The South Sea Company bought the contract from the British government for £9,500,000, a large proportion of Britain’s national debt. The sum was so huge because it was hoped that more lucrative trading rights with South America could be won once Britain got a toehold in the market. It was also assumed that the profits from slave trading would be enormous, which proved not to be the case.Speculators paid inflated prices for the stock, leading eventually to the company’s spectacular financial collapse in 1720. A large number of people were ruined by the share collapse, and the national economy greatly reduced as a result. A parliamentary inquiry held afterwards, found that many had profited unlawfully from the company and had their assets confiscated.
