Revenues - Cardiff. 1899 (Apr. 7) Piece bearing perforated embossed 1d blue revenue tied by the red embossed cancel with arms of Cardiff, handstamped "INLAND REVENUE / STAMPS / 7 ARP 99 / CARDIFF" and endorsed "I hereby certify that the above is the first stamp which was over-embossed at Cardiff, P.J Congdon". A unique proof of the first revenue cancel used at the Stamp Office at Cardiff.
1938-41 First flight covers comprising 1938 (Apr. 2) Penang to Alor Star and May 2nd Singapore to Ipoh flights by Wearne Bros; 1940 (Apr. 3) Penang to Kota-Bharu and return flight from Kota-Bharu franked Kelantan 2c pair + 4c both with rare Kota Bharu three line datestamp (Proud D10, only recorded date); 1941 (May 10) first Pan Am Singapore Clipper to Manila franked 30c or to San Francisco franked $1.45, the rate date stamp only used this one flight, a few slight faults. (6).
India 4a, rejoined pair each with a fine 1890 (Oct. 6) Mombasa c.d.s, left stamp stained and with small corner fault, the right stamp fine. India stamps were used at Mombasa from July until October 1890 after stocks of the GB overprint issue were sold out (due to the purchase by Whitfield King) and prior to the first regular B.E.A Co. issue on October 13th. The 4a probably the scarcest of the India stamps recorded used in B.E.A. S.G. 25a, £2,200. Photo on Page 136.
1921-32 Multiple Script CA ½d, 1d carmine-red, 2d orange, 2½d dull blue, 6d dull purple (the five original values issued in 1921) overprinted "SPECIMEN", all in corner marginal plate number "2" strips of three, tiny thin on one 2½d stamp, otherwise fine mint. Probably unique in this form, just three complete sheets of each value overprinted Specimen, ex. Freeland and "Koh-i-Noor". (5 Strips). Photo on Page 80.
1896 (May 21) 1a on 1a6p Zanzibar overprint postcard used to Germany, bearing 2½ surcharge on 1a (S.G. 24, type 4 surcharge in black, first setting), the 2½ surcharge cancelled in transit by an Aden c.d.s, fine and very scarce on cover. S.G. £300 as a stamp (x25 on cover). Photo on Page 252.
First Day Cover. 1914 (Apr. 19) Cover from Belgium to W.T Wilson in Birmingham franked 15c, handstamped "T" and endorsed "2d to pay" with a 2d postage due stamp cancelled at Handsworth on the first day of issue (Apr. 20), a North Western T.P.O Day Down transit c.d.s alongside, a fine F.D.C with R.P.S Certificate (2011). Also a stampless cover posted from Manchester to Southport on April 20th, a 2d due applied the following day, the second day of issue. (2). Photo on Page 10.
Picture Postcards - Kemaman. 1933-39 Picture postcards with Kemaman cancels, a fine real Photo card of the old town at Kemaman sent to the USA franked 1c + 5c on the picture side, a card of a mosque with 4c on the picture side cancelled to order, and cards to USA franked 6c (2), also a real photo card of the Customs House at Kemaman (stamp removed). (4 cards).
Tasmania. 1899-1912 Pictorial Issue, the specialised mint and used collection in an album, and on stockcards or loose, with Specimen overprints, a range of compound perfs on all values (approx 78), double perfs on 1d pair, 2d (6, single + pair + block of six) and 3d, imperforate ½d, 1d (5) ad 2d (2), imperforate between stamp and margin varieties on ½d, 1d (2), 2d (4), plate varieties, shades, etc. Also cancellations with numerals and c.d.s cancels sorted in packets, and duplicates including Victoria and Australia. A good collection with some very scarce varieties. (1,000s). Photo on Pages 14, 30 & 104.
1842-53 Entire letters and covers bearing 1d reds (12, two with two singles or a pair) or 1841 2d blue, all selected stamps with four margins, including 1842 Greenock Maltese Cross, and 1845 entire letter with blue Leeds arrival datestamp struck across the stamp (cancelled by "255" numeral). (13).
Revenues. 1911 KGV Fees stamp, Master Die Proof in black on white glazed card, reduced to stamp size, applied to a piece cut from the De la Rue striking book endorsed "Oct. 60 leads & 6 extra" and "nov 4th 1913". Also QV (8), KEVII (5) and KGV (3) Fees stamps used. A unique proof. (17). Photo on Page 140.
½ Anna on 2a vermilion, manuscript surcharge with initials "A.D", original value not obliterated, upper marginal single used with Mombasa c.d.s, small defects at right and upper right corner and a few short perfs, still a good looking example of this rare stamp. S.G. 22, £5,500. Photo on Page 142.
1922 Malaya-Borneo Exhibition, first setting, 21c mint reconstructed block of thirty, rows 7-12, each row separated and rejoined with hinges, including varieties feather in hat (strangely unlisted by S.G. on this stamp), oval "O" (4) and raised stop (3); and 25c mint reconstructed block of 34, rows 5-8, 9/4-5, 10/4-5 and rows 11-12, comprising three blocks of ten and a block of four rejoined with hinges, including varieties feather in hat, oval "O" (4) and raised stop (3). S.G. 42/3, £3,855+. (64).
Philatelic Events. 1909-37 Cards, covers and labels including official cards for German Philatelic Day and Federation Day of German-Austrian Clubs in 1909 (5) or 1911 (5), Vienna Philatelic Exhibitions in 1911 (8, also labels), 1923 (4, also labels) or WIPA 1933 (21, various cancels including Melk-Wien Schiffpost and Schloss Laxenburg Surprise Journey), one cover with various WIPA labels and 50g+50g stamp (S.G. 703, £350, address cut out), International Stamp Dealers Day cancels, Austrian Philatelic Day cancels, etc. (153).
Kuala Krai. 1924 Covers to Penang with scarce barred type double ring c.d.s (Proud D2), one cover franked 1c pair + 3c (datestamps a little faint in places); the other "On Government Service" cover registered with 1c + 8c vertical pair tied by two fine datestamps, boxed registration handstamp and violet "W.A Ward / DISTRICT OFFICER / ULU KELANTAN", minor staining but scarce and attractive. Also similar cancels on stamp or piece. (2+). Photo on Page 168.
1899 ½d - 5/-, Mint and used selection including Specimen, mint and used sets, additional examples of all values with a further three used 5/- stamps, ½d mint corner block of six including both value errors, both ½d value errors used, ½d imperf between stamp and central margin mint, 1d imperforate between stamp and margin mint (2), 4d value error mint (also used with faults), etc. S.G. 43/50, £2,200. Postage Stamp Used as a Due. 1924 Cover posted within France franked at the 5c printed matter rate, redirected to England and charged 1½d (the minimum charge on mail from overseas), collected with a 1d postage due + ½d postage stamp tied by Denton, Harleston datestamps (Sep. 4). Flap missing and small tear at upper edge, otherwise fine and unusual. Photo on Page 32.
1882 Provisional Issue 1c black on magenta, variety missing cross at right, unused no gum, and used within a pair. This major variety occurred on stamp six of the fifth printing only. Strangely unlisted by Gibbons, who list similar varieties for the earlier 1862 provisional issue. S.G. 164var. (3). Photo on Page 78.
1926-33 Used and unused selection comprising 1926-30 15c and 18c on orange paper vertical pairs with "cent•s" variety on upper stamp used, cancels on the lower stamps only; 1926-30 9c and 18c on orange paper both used (18c with Mkoani c.d.s), 31c and 50c both with "cent•s" variety unused, and two unusual 1933 pieces cut from envelopes with combinations of the 1926-30 9c + 18c orange + 1930-33 2c, or 1926-30 21c + 1930-33 2c pair + 6c, the pieces a little creased. S.G. £1,000. (15).
Bisected Dues. 1932 Cover from Malta to Cornwall franked 1½d, endorsed "1d to pay" with a diagonally bisected 2d postage due tied by Perranwell Station c.d.s (Jan. 25), 45cm opening tear from the upper edge well clear of the stamp, otherwise fine and very scarce. A rare postage due bisect with a station cancel, and the only recorded bisected 1924-31 issue 2d (D24). Photo on Page 32.
2½ on 1a6p Sepia, red surcharges prepared for official purposes, mint block of four with margin at base, upper pair with type 3 surcharges, lower pair with type 5 surcharges, lower right stamp with small second "z", the others with normal "z", lower pair unmounted. 1875 1d Magenta, watermark Crown CC, with "SPECIMEN" overprint type D10, fine mint, possibly unique. This type D10 overprint only recorded by Samuel on the St. Christopher 1870 perf 12½ 1d rose and 6d, unlisted on this stamp with no example in the Brookes collection. Portugal. 1836-1972 Covers and lettersheets including 1908 letters on royal notepaper sent after the assassination of the King (2, with envelopes), crowned Congress cancels (2, one stampless, one bearing Congreso de los Dipitados stamp), 1872 cover to Sweden with imperf 100r + perforated 120r, also Cape Verde, etc., some with enclosed letters or cards. (55).
1891 Cover to Manchester with a 1d lilac and South Eastern Railway 2d letter stamp both pen cancelled and tied upon arrival by Manchester 498 duplexs (Aug. 30), violet "WATERLOO / PARCELS OFFICE" in lower left corner, the reverse unusually bearing a large label "South Eastern Railway, Charges To Pay, Booked Through, To Manchester via Wloo". A fine commercial railway letter sent in the first year of the service. Photo on Page 44.

1920-28 Wilson covers to Manchester, franked 1½d and bearing railway letter stamps with 3d surcharges, comprising 1920 Manchester, South Junc. & Altrincham Ry 2d stamp with violet "THREE / PENCE" handstruck surcharge cancelled by violet "STRETFORD", and 1928 manuscript "3" surcharge on Cheshire Lines Committee 4d letter stamp cancelled violet "CHESHIRE LINES RLY. / BAGULEY, PHONE: 459 SALE" and date. Two scarce stamps on cover. (2).
½ Anna on 2a vermilion, manuscript surcharge with initials "A.B", used with 1893 (June 19) Melindi squared circle, fine and unique with this cancel. This stamp is specifically mentioned in the Krieger/Minns handbook. With a 1998 letter from John Minns stating the stamp is genuine, and offering to buy it for £500. S.G. 23, £1,300+. Kishangarh. 1917-18 Blocks of four with "ON/K/D/S" handstamps used, comprising 1904-10 perf 13½ ½a chestnut with double overprint on upper right and lower left stamps, omitted from the other two stamps; and 1913-16 rouletted 1a red with overprints on the upper left stamp and centrally across the lower pair, omitted from the upper right stamp, unusual. S.G. O18a, O30ac, var., £575. (2 blocks).
1940 Stamp Centenary ½d - 3d set of six in vertical strips of three, all affixed to a piece cut from the Mauritania Post Office U.P.U Specimen collection, tied by violet "SPECIMEN / COLLECTION/ MAURITANIE" handstamps. A unique archival piece, that proves these stamps were sent as Specimens to the U.P.U for distribution to member countries. (6 strips). Photo on Page 22.
Lord Howe Island. 1930 (Sep. 4) Cover addressed within Lord Howe Island franked River Murray Tercentenary 1½d with manuscript surcharge "2d Paid PM LHI" tied by a Lord Howe Island c.d.s. When the Lord Howe Island Post Office ran out of 2d stamps the Postmaster was authorised to surcharge 1½d stamps in manuscript; 260 stamps were surcharged and used between August 23rd and October 17th 1930. A fine and scarce cover (S.G. £750 as a single stamp). Photo on Page 68.

The award winning collection superbly written up on 128 pages including signature of Nobel Laureate R.L.M Synge tying Swedish Nobel stamp to piece, Russia 1934 stamps with Specimen handstamps applied in Lisbon (4), Belgium 1966 3f ministerial proof, 1d black used, 1972 Ross Dependency 18c working die proof, 2002 North Korea artwork for the adopted Magnetite stamp, 1928 cover with U.S fancy cachet of Clarksdale depicting a copper smelter, 1928 Russia cover with 3k affixed to a label advertising the manufacture of laboratory glassware, 1935 cover from R.M.S "Alamanzora" with "DAMAGED BY / SALT WATER" cachets on both sides, G.B 1965 Lister Centenary 6d original artwork, 1893 Hammonia Local Post lettercard with Sunlight Soap advert used, adverts on the reverse of New Zealand QV stamps including mint 8d strip of three and coloured adverts (35), 1840 G.B 1d Mulready lettersheet "Envelope Select Advertiser" No.1 containing various adverts, France 1887 15c lettercard containing multiple adverts (and sold for 5c) used within Paris, Nigeria 1968 2/6 original artwork, De la Rue ink recipe bearing two labels in tyrian plum, Victoria 2d colour trial pairs with trial cancels showing various attempts to remove the cancel or ink lines (3), USA 1903 1c blue die proof, Australia 1932 10/- mint, New Zealand 1901 1d P.T.P.O postcard with Kempthorne, Prosser & Co advert for manures and fertilisers, USA 1865 patriotic envelope used, India 1949 Gandhi 10r unmounted, 1812 entire letter with "ANTIGUA" large fleuron, etc. Also four stockbooks with chemistry related stamps. This exhibit won a large Vermeil at Singapore 2015, Gold at Westpex 2017, and Large Gold at various national shows in Australia, New Zealand and USA. (100s). Photo on Page 54.
Manchester. 1905 (Dec. 18) Cover posted from Manchester to Leeds with QV 1d postcard cut-out tied by Manchester c.d.s, arrival backstamp, the stamp then tied by a superb strike of the violet oval "MANCHESTER / ADVANCE POSTED / CHRISTMAS 1905", presumably cancelled to order, nevertheless a scarce cancel and very unusual. 1840 (May 8) Small cover posted within London bearing 1d black TJ plate 1a, good to large margins, red Maltese Cross cancel and superb MY 8 datestamp on left flap (opened for display), also dated "8 May 1840" by the sender above the address, "Bond St. NO" handstamp alongside the stamp. Seal cut from the reverse and small closed file hole, an attractive use on just the third day of issue. S.G. £5,000. Photo on Page 6.
Straits Settlements Used in Perlis. KEVII 1c single and pair cancelled by Perlis double ring bilingual c.d.s, 1c pair (faults) and 3c with single ring Perlis c.d.s, the 1c pair single ring c.d.s dated 25.8.05 and the 1c pair double ring bilingual c.d.s dated 22.12.1908, both during the Siam stamp period, the 3c dated 13.6.11 when F.M.S stamps were in use.
