Clayton (Thomas, 1673-1725). Arsinoe, Queen of Cyprus. An Opera, after the Italian Manner as it is PerformÂ’d at the Theatre Royal in Drury-Lane, by Her MajestyÂ’s Servants, first edition, printed for Jacob Tonson, 1705, texblock only, occasional spotting and offsetting, ownership ink stamp to title page verso, contained within marbled paper envelope box, 4to. The first full length opera in the Italian style to be performed in England. Thomas Clayton was appointed to the KingÂ’s Musick in July 1689; he spent some period of time in Italy at the turn of the century, and on his return produced Arsinoe, with a libretto translated (probably by Motteux) from an Italian text by Stanzani. A contemporary critic condemned the music, but it enjoyed considerable success and paved the way for the introduction of Italian opera to England. -1
* Rossini (Gioachino, 1792-1868). A portrait from life of the composer Rossini, circa 1828, fine and rare half-length life-size portrait, oil on canvas, depicting the composer seated at a damask covered table, holding a quill pen and with manuscript music beside him, relined by Francis Leedham (probably mid-19th century), with his blind stamp to verso of stretcher, 87 x 75cm (34.25 x 29.5ins), modern antique-style ebonised wood frame, with printed labels to verso of the Historical Portraits gallery, 31 Dover Street, London, inscribed with the number 2137 Provenance: Purchased by Anthony Gasson from Phillip Mould Historical Portraits, London, circa 2000 An important and rare unattributed portrait of Rossini in his mid-thirties, around the time of the composition of his most famous opera William Tell. In this portrait the composer appears just a little older than he does in the famous head and shoulders portrait with cap of 1820 in the collection of the International Museum and Library of Music, Bologna. The Museum also holds an oil portrait of Rossini by Pietro Bettelli from 1818 The pose in our portrait is similar to the photograph of Rossini by Leopold Ernest Mayer & Pierre-Louis Pierson, c. 1855 Francis Leedham (1794-1870) was a picture cleaner and liner active by 1831 from his premises on Little Edward Street, London. He was particularly productive for the art collector and antiquarian Lord Northwick, and later the National Gallery where he relined at least fifteen Turners. -1
* Baker (Janet, born 1933). A good group of six signed large vintage gelain silver prints by Ronald Gunn, appearing in ‘Les Troyens’ with Scottish Opera, 3 May 1969, all signed by Baker, one in black ballpoint pen and five in silver marker, photographer’s credit stamp to verso of each, 36.5 x 25.5cm (14.5 x 10ins), and one the reverse. Widely admired for her dramatic intensity, it was perhaps best represented in her famous portrayal as Dido, the tragic heroine of Berlioz’s Magnum Opus, ‘Les Troyens’, conducted by Alexander Gibson. -6
* Puccini (Giacomo, 1858-1924). Vintage signed postcard, c. 1905, head and shoulders real photo postcard, signed and dated vertically downwards either side of his face, ‘Giacomo Puccini, Torre del Lago, 3.1.09’, adhesion marks to verso affecting imprint details to left margin, addressed in Puccini’s holograh to ‘Mr Herbert Hugh Harvey, 41 Hugh A., Belgrave Road, London, S.W.’, without message, stamp or postmark, verso somewhat toned, 135 x 85mm. This card was signed by Puccini at a time of great tension, and operatic high drama, in the household he shared with his common-law wife Elvira. On 1st January the jealous Elvira had wrongly accused their maid Dora Manfredi of having an affair with the maestro. Further insults were publicly made and tragically the entirely innocent and virgin Dora committed suicide on 23 January. -1
