§ Laurence Stephen Lowry, RBA, RA (British, 1887-1976) Fever Van signed lower right in pen "L S Lowry" and with the Fine Art Trade Guild blind stamp offset lithograph 45 x 53cm (18 x 21in) The fever van was the colloquial term in the north of England for the ambulance that transported patients with infectious diseases, usually scarlet fever or diphtheria, to the local isolation or infectious diseases hospital. These vehicles were in existence throughout the country from around 1910 to the 1950s and had various nicknames. Condition: In a good condition, there are no visible faults. Margins seem clean and there are no signs of any offset stains from the mount. Not examined out of frame.

Two volumes bound in one, thick folio, titles in red and black with large woodcut printer's devices, leaves from another 16th century work bound in as endpapers, woodcut initial letters throughout, first title with manuscript annotations, bottom corner of first few leaves worn/dog-eared, bound in limp vellum with elaborate manuscript lettering to spine. Jansen (1510-1576) was the first Bishop of Ghent; TAMBURINI, TOMASSO - OPERA OMNIA Venetiis (Venice), Apud Antonium Giraldi, 1689. Two volumes bound as one, folio, half-title with early manuscript annotation, title pages in red and black with large woodcut printer's devices, full vellum, spine worn and upper joint cracked. Tamburini (1591-1675) was an Italian Jesuit moral theologian who entered the Society of Jesus when fifteen years old. He was professor of philosophy for four years, of dogmatic theology seven years, of moral theology seventeen years, and was rector of various colleges; plus another 17th century folio theological work (3)++JANSEN - bottom corner of first few leaves frayed and dog-eared, vellum worn at corners with loss, spine dulled TAMBURINI - spine worn, joints cracked. from the library of St Augustine, Ramsgate, with their book-label and stamp to title All three folios with some browning of text, typical of European paper of this period

Elephant folio, engraved frontispiece, 62 fine lithographed plates (all hand-coloured), text with spotting in parts, plates which face text affected by some offsetting/foxing whilst those which are bound consecutively are mostly clean. Reference: Garrison-Morton #3986-7 and other entries - "Contains Alibert's 'family tree' of dermatoses, a classification later discarded for Willan's scheme...the book is also notable for its illustrations, the first on its subject in a French book [for the edition of 1806], and for its original description of mycosis fungoides"++Later cloth, corners a bit bumped and a little worn, text is variously affected by spotting , noticeably at the front and end of the book, although the margins are wide, some of the plates towards the end of the book have been slightly cropped by the binder with the loss of the occasional plate number (situated at the top edge of the leaves) or the first few letters of the legend (likewise printed at the top edge), plates which face text affected by offsetting/foxing whilst those which are bound consecutively are mostly clean, very small library stamp on both free end-papers only

[ELIOT, GEORGE pseudonym of EVANS, MARY ANNE] - A FAMILY ARCHIVE OF MATERIAL RELATING TO THE EVANS FAMILY, INCLUDING 3 ITEMS SIGNED BY MARY ANNE EVANS comprising: I) An undated letter written by Mary Ann Evans to 'Fanny' (Evans, her half-sister by their common father, Robert Evans Senior), and signed "Marian Evans"; II) A small book (Isaac Watts, Psalms Hymns etc., published 1828) presented by Mary Anne Evans to Mrs Houghton (Fanny Houghton nee Evans), with inscription on front free end-paper "Mrs Houghton with the love of her affectionate sister Mary Anne" and dated March 31 1836, with a further written quotation by Mary Anne below (taken from The Psalms), the book in a fine 'cathedral' binding by Remnant & Edmonds of London, with their stamp at bottom of both boards; III) A small book (The Book of Psalms, published in London by Hamilton, Adams, and Co, early 19th century) presented by Mary Anne Evans with inscription on front free end-paper "Mrs Houghton with the love of her sister Mary Ann May 1838", the book bound in a red leather wallet-style binding; IV) A copy of the 'George Eliot Birthday Book' (title page missing but circa 1879/1880), in green publisher's cloth (missing spine), with numerous entries, 19th century and later, of birthdays and deaths of many members of the Evans family and others, some entries signed in person; V) Correspondence between various family members and Gordon S Height, the American publisher of the 7-volume 'George Eliot Letters', with several references to the letter mentioned above; VI) An undated mid-19th century letter from Sarah Ann Evans, wife of Mary Anne Evans' half-brother (Robert Evans, by their common father, Robert Evans Senior) to "Eva"; VII) Several dozen other related/unrelated items including: 19th century photographs of members of the Evans family; an 'Army & Navy Birthday Book' circa 1890 with m/s entries for the Evans family and others; an 1859 letter to Mary Anne's half-brother Robert Evans signed "Newcastle" (5th Duke of Newcastle); various family trees, indenture documents, printed material, etc. Provenance: by descent, from members of the Evans family and related families of Allen and others, much of the material having been passed down through several generations, and worthy of further research.
