Speculatively, the present portrait might possibly represent one of the sons of the famed Haitian revolutionary leader, Toussaint L’Ouverture (1743-1803), who died in a French prison at the age of 59. His two sons, Isaac (born 1784) and Saint-Jean (born 1791)were sent to a school for sons of colonial officials in France around 1796, but repeatedly ran away so eventually were sent to the College de la Marche, part of the University of Paris, where they were taken up by Josephine Beauharnais around 1798 after Toussaint had intervened to rehabilatate the future Empress's sugar estates in Saint Domingo, following their decline following the French Revolution.
