EXCEPTIONALLY RARE FIRST EDITION of this milestone in the history of biology in which the author comes to the “revolutionary conclusion that all green land plants undergo a regular alternation of dissimilar generations in their complete life histories” (Norman) and which significantly contributed to the growth of phylogenetic and evolutionary ideas. "The amount of new information presented is immense; the errors are minor and do not affect the overall picture ... With this single publication, the core of botany passed from its Middle Ages to the modern period" (DSB). QUASIMODO SALVATORE: (1901-1968) Italian Novelist and Poet. Nobel Prize in Literature in 1959. The Sicilian writer is widely considered one of the foremost Italian poets of the 20th century. A good A.L.S., `Quasimodo´, one page, folio, Milan, 11th February 1943, to Bonetti, in Italian. A cleanly written letter, Quasimodo stating `Dear Bonetti, thank you. A book about my work will soon be issued, edited by Cedam from Padova; the author is Mario Stefanilo. A useful volume for consultation for your work is Lirici nuovi by Luciano Anceschi…´, further and before concluding states `For 1943 I do not prepare anything.´ With a small partial trace of a purple ink stamp at the base, not affecting the text or signature. PIUS XI: (1857-1939) Pope of the Roman Catholic Church 1922-39. A large vintage signed 13.5 x 20 photograph, incorporating am Apostolic Blessing, the circular image depicting the Pope seated in a half length pose wearing a cassock, mozetta and zucchetto. Photograph by Guiseppe Felici of Rome and bearing their credit stamp to the mount. Immediately beneath the image appears an attractive neat calligraphic text in black and red inks and with a decorative initial letter M, in full, 'Most Foly Father, John Jermann and family, humbly prostrate at the feet of Your Holiness, beg the Apostolic Benediction and a Plenary Indulgence to be gained at the hour of death, on condition that, being truly sorry for their sins, even though unable to confess them and to receive the holy Viaticum, they shall at least invoke with their lips, or heart, the Holy Name of Jesus'. Signed ('Pius PP. XI') by the Pope immediately beneath the text and alongside a blind embossed seal. Some light chipping to the edges of the image and with some large, extensive tears and areas of paper loss to the edges of the mount. NIGHTINGALE FLORENCE: (1820-1910) English Pioneer of modern Nursing. A.L.S., Florence Nightingale, two pages, 8vo, South Street, Park Lane, London, 3rd May 1874, to Dr. [Charles Wager] Ryalls, Secretary of the Social Science Association. Nightingale writes in bold pencil and announces 'I propose republishing in the form of a pamphlet my paper on “Life or Death in India”, read at the meeting of the Social Science at Norwich in Sept. 1873' and continues to seek the permission of the Council for so doing, further remarking 'The appendix constituting two thirds of the publication is entirely new: & the paper itself enlarged & partly re-written. Under these circumstances I propose also to register the copyright in my own name'. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope (heavy dust staining to the recto) hand addressed and dated in ink by Nightingale and bearing a Penny Red postage stamp. One small, neat tear to the right edge of the central fold, not affecting the text or signature, VG Nightingale concerned herself with the health of the British Army in India and demonstrated that bad drainage, contaminated water, overcrowding and poor ventilation were causing a high death rate. Following the report The Royal Commission on India (1858-1963) Nightingale concluded that the health of the army and the people of India had to go hand in hand and so campaigned to improve the sanitary conditions of the country as a whole. Nightingale made a comprehensive statistical study of sanitation in Indian rural life and was the leading figure in the introduction of improved medical care and public health service in India. In 1858 and 1859 she successfully lobbied for the establishment of a Royal Commission into the Indian situation, providing her own report to the commission, which completed its own study in 1863. In 1873, following a decade of sanitary reform, Nightingale reported that mortality among the soldiers in India had declined.

Balbo served as Minister of the Air Force 1929-33 and did much towards popularising aviation in Italy and promoting Italian aviation to the world. Signed commemorative cover issued by the Lakewood Stamp Society of New Jersey and featuring an affixed original sepia photograph of the U.S.S. Macon airship leaving Lakehurst to greet Balbo's air armada over New York City. Postmarked at Lakehurst, New Jersey, 18th July 1933. Signed ('Balbo') by Balbo in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area. Accompanied by a typed letter of provenance from the Belham Exchange of Brooklyn, dated 9th May 1966. VG, 2

Signed 12mo piece `Gille´, the clipped piece, being part of a larger document, bears the typed text beneath the signature `SS-Oberfuhrer und Rgt. Kommandeur”. The neatly clipped piece, being part of a larger document, stating `An den Reichsfuhrer SS, Personlicher Stab, Berlin SW.11, Prinz Albrechtstr. 8”, bears a large green ink stamp, stating “Genehmigt - Der Reichsfuhrer - SS”, (“Approved - The SS Reichsfuhrer”), dated 25th August 1938, and signed beneath by Himmler in bold green pencil. REDIESS FRIEDRICH: (1900-1945) German Nazi SS Commander and Chief of Police of Norway during the German occupation in WWII 1940-45. Rediess committed suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound upon the collapse of the Third Reich in Norway on 8th May 1945. Signed 12mo clipped piece, being part of a larger document, bearing the typed text above the signature `Der SS-Standartenfuhrer". Signed by Rediess in bold black ink alongside an SS green ink stamp with the Nazi eagle and swastika. Neatly affixed to the lower white border of an 8 x 10 printed photograph of Rediess. G

Executed in 1952. Signed 12mo clipped piece `Sporrenberg´, being part of a larger document, bearing the printed text `Der Fuhrer des SS - Abschnitts XX - SS- Oberfuhrer´. HIMMLER HEINRICH: (1900-1945) Nazi German Politician, Reichsfuhrer of the Schutzstaffel (SS) 1929-45. An important war-time D.S., H. Himmler, in bold lack ink, two pages, folio, Berlin, 16th January 1939. The partially printed typed document, in German, bears the printed heading “Der Reichsfuhrer - SS - Chef der Deutschen Polizei in Reichsministerium des Innern”, (“Reichsfuhrer SS, Chief of the German Police in the Ministry of the Interior”, and is addressed to the Reich Commissioner in Vienna for the Reunification of Austria with the German Reich. The document refers to the order of taking over the budget of the Austrian federal police and gendarmerie, stating in part `Mr. Reich Commissioner, Mr. Klausner informed you of these questions, and….informed the Inspector of the Office in Vienna about this order, obliging you to take over the Austrian Federal Police and Gendarmerie budget. With regard to such urgent regulation, which I consider..´ Bearing alongside Himmler´s signature a Nazi ink stamp with the eagle and swastika. With few official ink stamps and contemporary hand registry annotations to both pages. Four binder holes to the left border, not affecting the text or signatures. G to VG

BORMANN MARTIN: (1900-1945) Nazi Official, head of the Party Chancellery and Private Secretary to Adolf Hitler. T.L.S., Bormann, one page, 4to, Obersalzberg (Eagle´s nest), 22nd June 1939, to Gauleiter Franz Hofer, Innsbruck, in German. Bormann responds to his correspondent´s letter, stating `I was delighted to receive your good wishes for my birthday; I am sending you my warm regards. "Heil Hitler!"´ Accompanied by Gauleiter Hofer´s letter to Bormann, dated 16th June 1939, bearing an ink stamp from the Fuhrer´s office and a blind embossed seal with the eagle and swastika to the upper left corner. Both with four file holes to the left borders and very small trace of a former staple not affecting the texts or signatures. About VG, 2 Franz Hofer (1902-1975) Nazi Gauleiter of the Tyrol. As the area's supreme Nazi, Hofer dealt directly with Hitler or with the Führer's deputy, Martin Bormann. Hofer is often considered the father of the Redoubt.

[HITLER ADOLF]: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. SOKHEY LEILA: (1899-1947) Indian kathak dancer known as Madame Menaka who spent much of her career travelling across India and Europe with her dance troupe. An interesting T.L.S., Menaka Deri, also in Gujarati, one page, 4to, Berlin, n.d. (April 1937), to Adolf Hitler ('Your Excellency'). Menaka states that she is writing on behalf of herself and members of her ballet 'to ask you if you will honour us and our country by coming to our dance recital at the Beethoven Saal Berlin on the 26th instant at 8-15 p.m.', further explaining that they have been touring Germany and 'were fortunate enough to gain 3 honours prizes in the International Tanzwettspiele Olympiade 1936' and that they are now making their last performance in Germany before returning to India, further remarking 'We should feel highly honoured if you would grace our recital with your presence and we would be most disappointed if we had to leave Germany, a country where we have been treated with so much appreciation, honour and hospitality without having performed before her universally respected leader'. With the black ink stamp of Hitler's private chancellery to the head of the page, bearing the date 19th April 1937. Accompanied by a contemporary typed German translation of the letter. Together with a T.L.S., Augst, by Martin Augst, an employee of the Chancellery, one page, oblong 8vo, Berlin, 21st April 1937, to the office of the Fuhrer's Adjutant, in German, forwarding Menaka's letter and adding that no acknowledgement has been sent. With a pencil annotation by Otto Meissner (1880-1953, German civil servant, Chief of the Presidential Chancellery 1920-45) at the head, signed with his initial ('M'), indicating that Menaka's request should be met with a definite refusal on the grounds of absence. Also including an original unsigned carbon typed copy of a formal reply from Meissner, one page, 4to, Berlin, 23rd April 1937, to Menaka, in German. Further including a few loose pages from a programme for Menaka's European tour of 1936-37 and a related newspaper article. All with file holes to the left edges and a few other minor faults, generally about VG, 9

MARAT JEAN-PAUL: (1743-1793) French Political Theorist, Scientist and radical Journalist during the French Revolution, advocating for basic human rights for the poorest, and publishing on his periodical L´Ami du Peuple (“The People´s Friend”). Marat was assassinated in 1793 and became a revolutionary martyr to the Jacobins. Extremely rare Autograph Manuscript in the hand of Marat, one page, clipped 6.5 x 1.5 piece, n.p.[Paris], n.d.[1792], in French. The document being part of the text for a pamphlet article by Marat, entitled “Tres humble suppliques aux Pères bonscrits qui n´ont rien contre ceux qui ont tout”, (“Very humble pleas addressed to the Peers who have nothing against those who have everything”), with one word crossed by Marat. The autograph manuscript states in part `On voit que nous regardons la constitution comme l´ouvrage des représentans(sic) vendus.. d´autre role a l´assemblée nationale que de lutter contre leur destruction et d´appuyer sottement les vues du cabinet.´, (“We can see that we look at the constitution as the work of corrupt representatives ... which is the exact truth; because the plan of the court to which they are sold to .. no other role in the national assembly than to fight against their destruction and to support foolishly the views of the cabinet.´ The clipped piece has been neatly and carefully affixed to a an oblong 4to page, and the document bears a small ink stamp, being the prestigious collection Crawford stamp provenance. FOUCHÉ JOSEPH: (1759-1820) Convention Deputy and Minister of Police. Multiple signed D.S., Fouché, two pages, 4to, Chaumont & Paris, 15th May and 3rd October 1799, to Nicolas Brugnon & Marie Saunois, on the Haute-Marne administration department printed stationery, in French. The partially printed document being a certificate issued by Haute-Marne department as requested by Brugnon & Saunois, stating that they have never been included in the emigrants list in order to `..grant an inheritance at the Saint-Domingue island..´ Signed by Fouché to the second page, in his capacity as Minister of the Police. Also signed to the second page by Pierre-Laurent Forfait (1752-1807) Navy Minister under Consulate. Signed Forfait in his capacity as Navy and colonies Minister. Countersigned by several administrators of the Haute-Marne department. The document bears a red ink stamp of the Police Ministry alongside Fouché´s signature, as well as a Navy ministry ink stamp, and a vignette of the Haute-Marne department at the heading. Very small overall minor age wear and two extremely small tears to the left edge, otherwise G

Bernadotte´, two pages, folio, Paris, 16th August 1799, to the administrators of supplies, in French. The partially printed document shows the heading of the war ministry, and Bernadotte requests  `..the maximum order in the way we have control of the use of funds which will be given to us for the purchase of the equipments and goods for the military convoys..´ With blank address leaf, bearing an ink stamp of the Minister of war, and with very small area of paper loss due to the opening. G

GOUVION SAINT-CYR LAURENT DE: (1764-1830) Marshal of France, Marquis de Gouvion Saint-Cyr. L.S., `Le M.al Gouvion St Cyr´, two pages, folio, Paris, 12th February 1819, on the Ministry of War printed stationery, to Baron Dubreton, Lieutenant General and Commandant of the 5th military division, in French. Gouvion refers to his predecessor´s order to all Lieutenant Generals of the military divisions, indicating that it was forbidden to add anything to the published proclamations unless it was authorized by the war ministry, and further states in part `The King has been informed that several officers or chiefs of corps have allowed themselves to publish daily orders which were not related to the service…´ Gouvion Saint-Cyr further reports on the King´s orders related to these proclamations. The letter bears a very small ink collection stamp at the base. VG

Unusual A.L.S., `C[itoy]enne Beauharnais´, to the heading, very rare in this form, in the third person, signed twice, one page, 12mo, n.p., n.d., to Citizen Pelet, in French. A good, large D.S., Marie Louise, as Regent Empress on behalf of Napoleon, one page (vellum), large oblong folio, Imperial Palace, St. Cloud, 3rd July 1813, in French. The partially printed document relates to Louis Pierre de Sainson, Lieutenant Colonel serving the King of Westphalia in his engineer topographic cabine, who is authorized to remain under the service of the King, having consulted a report given by the Minister of Justice, he `..Swears the oath to H.M. the King of Westphalia..´ under the rules given according to Imperial decree of the 6th April 1809 and 26th August 1811. Signed by the Empress at the foot, also bearing several countersignatures. A document in very fine condition. With the reputed Crawford collection ink stamp provenance to the bottom right corner. DE CAUMONT ANTOINE NOMPAR: (1632-1723) Duke of Lauzun. French Courtier and Soldier, the only love interest of 'the greatest heiress in Europe', Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans, Duchess of Montpensier. D.S., Antonein Nompar de Caumont, duc de Lauzun, one page (vellum), oblong 8vo, n.p., 4th June n.y. (1662?), in French. The manuscript document is a receipt in which the Duke of Lauzun acknowledges a payment of 3750 livres in relation to a rental. Countersigned by two individuals and with an official circular blank ink stamp to the upper edge featuring a coat of arms. Some very minor age wear and light creasing, otherwise VG Antoine Nompar de Caumont, whose ugliness seems to have exercised a certain fascination over many women, was due to marry the Duchess of Montpensier on 21st December 1670, however just days before her cousin, King Louis XIV, forbade the union.

MORNY CHARLES DE: (1811-1865) French Statesman. Duke of Morny. Half-brother of Emperor Napoleon III, and grandson of Talleyrand, he assisted to engineer the coupof 2nd December 1851. He also played an important role in the development of thoroughbred horse racing in France. In 1862 Morny built the Deauville- La Torques Race course. The Prix Mornay is named in his honour. A good A.L.S., 'Morny', one page, 4to, Paris, 10th December 1851, on the Office of the Ministry of the Interior printed stationery, in his capacity as Minister of the Interior, in French. Morny states in full, `The Minister of the Interior authorises Publication for the newspaper “Le Corsaire”, under reserve of the laws prescribed for other newspapers'. A very early autograph document, two pages, 8vo, lined paper, Brussels, n.d., in French. Prince Charles, being a child, has very carefully penned a series of words, as part of his spelling school exercises. To the first page Prince Charles cleanly copies a number of personal pronouns `tu, je, il, tu, il, je, tu, je, il….´, and to the second page two words as part of his plural lesson `pluriel. Pluriel´. To the upper part of both pages, affixed by his teacher, a small clipped printed page being the grammatical lesson. Proudhon confirms a diner appointment, stating in part `..I know that this day is not easy for you, but it is impossible on my side to sort this out differently; and also I calculate that freeing you at 9h you will still have time to see your world.´ At the base and to a post-scriptum, Proudhon states `I hope that Ferrari will be with us´ With blank address leaf, bearing a stamp affixed. The document being the commemorative presentation of an 8 cents U.S. postage stamp showing a portrait of John J. Pershing. SIKORSKI WLADYSLAW: (1881-1943) Polish military and political leading figure who promoted the cause of the independence of Poland from the Russian Empire. He served as Prime Minister of Poland 1922-23, and of the Polish government in exile during WWII. Sikorski died in a plane crash, the circumstances of the accident still remaining unclear. A very good signed and inscribed 5 x 7 photograph, the Vandyk image showing Sikorski in a head and shoulders pose, wearing his military uniform and decorations. Signed in bold blue ink to the lower white border `Sikorski´, in Polish, and dated beneath `London 22nd July 1942´ in his hand. Bearing to the verso an ink stamp of the London Photographer Vandyk, 41, Buckingham Palace Road. Signed portraits of Sikorsky are rare in any form. Very small age ear and toning, otherwise G Sikorski visited the England and the United States in 1942 looking for the allies support and pleading in favour of his invaded homeland. In his speeches he would say `The Polish Armed Forces have been fighting, are fighting and shall continue to fight on land, on sea and in the air, wherever the military forces of Germany can be destroyed.´

Gladstone commences his letter 'You will have wondered that the proofs of the Victoria Coins have not reached you' and continues to explain that some are ready to be sent at once, adding 'but unfortunately the die of the crown piece has been broken which has caused the delay that has occurred' and assuring Neumann that the completion will be made as expeditiously as possible. The attractive partially printed document, bearing to the heading a very large and impressive vignette showing an eagle, snake, drums and flags, is the appointment of Alfredo Chavero as Controller of the Bank of London and Mexico. Beneath the vignette, the document shows the printed title “Porfirio Diaz, Constitutional President of the Mexican United States”. To the front lower left border the document bears a very attractive blind embossed paper seal affixed. Countersigned at the base, with ink stamp over a post-stamp affixed to the upper corner. Assassinated. A rare T.L.S., `Che´, two pages, folio, La Habana, 14th June 1963, in Spanish. The document bears to the upper left corner the printed heading “Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara - Minister”, and refers to a declaration of heirs, to the Party prosecutor report and to the testimonies of witnesses obtained, all related to the belongings of Serafin Yet or Yec, a Chinese-born citizen who obtained the Cuban nationality since 1946 and died in 1956, but had not registered his will. Che Guevara, in his capacity as Minister of Industry, approves seven years after, the inheritance in favour of the spouse Pilar Fuentes. Neatly mounted to a stiff card page removed from a Victorian album, with a portion of the verso included and featuring a good red wax seal. With a newspaper obituary of Liszt neatly mounted beneath and with two photographs relating to Bisley, near Stroud, and the Keble family laid down to the verso. The partially printed document, completed in an unidentified hand, is a receipt issued by the Royal Italian Opera in which Maurel acknowledges receipt of a payment of £200 from Frederick Gye. NO RESERVE Music.- Devienne (François) Méthode pour la Flûte dediée à Monsieur Roslin d'Ivry, Nouvelle Édition, engraved throughout, title with vignette of classical figure playing the flute by Aubert and 113pp. of text, fingering charts and musical notation by Richomme printed on both sides of sheet, all with number "402" at foot, title with old ink stamp at foot and reinforced at fore-margin, light foxing and soiling, contemporary half mottled calf, a little worn, spine frayed at head, 4to, Paris, Janet et Cotelle, [?1820].⁂ Later edition of Nouvelle Méthode... published by Imbault in Paris in 1794, by the most influential tutor of the classical (pre-Boehm) flute. It contains information on technique and articulation, and whereas the first edition was just for the single-keyed flute this edition includes instruction for a four-keyed instrument. Devienne played bassoon at the Paris Opera and was professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire from its foundation in 1793.WorldCat lists only one copy of this edition, in the Netherlands Music Institute library in The Hague.

A copy of the exhibition catalogue accompanies the lot. The four melodies, dedicated to Madeleine Lemaire, with poem and portrait, were originally published as separate fascicules by Heugel in 1896 and also offered in this combined format, price 5fr. The poems were then published in Les Plaisirs et les Jours later the same year.

16th century Almanac.- Erra Pater (pseudonym) The Prognosticacion for ever of Erra Pater, manuscript in Tudor English, in a cursive hand, on paper, 56pp., wormholes in text with some loss of words particularly affecting 15ff. along inner margins, last three ff. with holes and some loss of text, very small fragment of an early medieval manuscript "[do]minus cum potenti[a]" laid down on inner wooden board, bound with 5 vellum ff. at beginning and 7 vellum ff. at end (some with 19th century juvenile scribbling), bound in a 14th century medieval blind-stamped vellum over wooden boards, extensively worn but still durable, upper cover wooden board split in two, later circular ink stamp on lower cover of a library at Ulm, remains of brass clasps, 110 x 83mm., [England], [c. 1580s].⁂ An extremely rare survival. No other 16 century manuscript of this work has been traced. First printed as "The pronostycacyon for euer of Errer Pater: A Jewe borne in Jewery, a Doctour in Astronomye and Physicke. Profytable to kepe the bodye in helth...", Robert Wyer, [?1540]. Text starting: "As I find in Astronomie ther bee four manner of cholours in mans boddie complections", and ending with the section, "The saying of [Erra Pate]r to the Husband[man]", and without the last two sections published in other versions, "Heerafter followeth the Reignes of the Kings of England...", and, "A rule to know when the Termes begin and end, with their Returnes... " Perhaps the above manuscript is copied from the "after 1582" edition. The Prognostication is a compilation of astrological medical advice "that hath dominion of the bodie of man" and a predictor of the weather during the various seasons. This fictional author was extremely popular during the Tudor period and continued to be published, with additions, into the 18th century."Here hee sheweth of all the dismall or perilous daies that cometh in the yeare... Masters of Astronomie and visick that this crafte first found telleth the most perilous and most dangerous daies in the yeare - In which if ann mann or woman bee let bloud of wounde or vein they shall die wthin xvi daies following... ."Provenance: Found by the present vendor in the walls of an old house.

Ward, 1778; an ms. insurance document for Samuel Munckley relating to a voyage to Barbados and surrounding ports, including a list of names of subscribers and their shares, 1p., 1757; a printed booklet with ms. insertions to 1p. listing the crew of the Blaze Castle for a 1769 voyage to Madeira and Barbados, along with respective wages, 290 x 219mm., 1769; a printed document with ms. insertions 'Instructions for the better keeping company with His Majesty's ship Preston, Captain William Truscott', single sheet, 445 x 290mm., printed both sides, a few holes within text, creased and soiled, no printer, [18th century]; and a copy letter of June, 1794 relating to the cessation of compensation to British merchants through the American courts after the War of Independence, together c.120 pieces, some tears and holes with occasional loss, some staining and soiling, all mounted in a later board and paper album, worn, Bristol and other places, c.1750-1850. ⁂ A superb record of life in and around one of Britain's major trading ports. With much relating to the operations of Samuel Munckley (1720-1802), Bristol slave trader, merchant, and ship owner, including a good group of promissory notes, receipts and insurance documents. Also, details of individual vessels, along with their owners, cargoes and routes, including America, the West Indies and Europe. Finally, a selection of documents relating to ancillary businesses highlights the benefits of the port to the city of Bristol and other British towns. We see gunpowder, cork and tea & coffee suppliers, glove makers, and the Great Western Railway.

Mansfield (Katherine) In A German Pension, first edition, half-title, 4pp. advertisements and 22pp. publisher's catalogue at end, embossed presentation stamp to title, contemporary ink name to front pastedown, original cloth, gilt lettering very slightly dulled, small nick head of upper joint, lower corner of upper cover rounded (?as issued), preserved in green cloth drop-back box by Temple Bookbinders, 8vo, [1911].⁂ A very good copy of her first published collection of short stories. Published by the ill-fated Stephen Swift (aka Charles Granville) who ended up imprisoned for bigamy and his publishing company liquidated in 1912. This first printing is one of only 500 copies. This edition was followed by two further reprints of 500 copies in January and in May/June 1912. The title was then not republished until 1926 after the author's death, when her husband John Middleton Murry had it reprinted. Extremely scarce with such attributes.
