HARLOW JEAN: (1911-1937) American Actress and Sex Symbol. An excellent vintage signed 10 x 13 photograph of Harlow seated in a full length pose wearing a plain black dress. Photograph by Clarence Sinclair Bull and bearing his blindstamp to the lower white border and his Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer credit stamp to the verso. A typed caption lightly affixed to the verso indicates that the photograph dates from the time of The Secret Six (1931), an early gangster movie in which the actress starred as Anne Courtland. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area of the background and dated 4th June 1936 in her hand. Harlow has further added a brief sentiment in her hand, 'May yoeur (sic) life be happy always!' to a light area at the base of the image. Authentic signed photographs of Harlow are extremely rare - as the greeting on this photograph illustrates Harlow was only semi-literate and the vast majority of autographs were signed by her mother. A few light surface and corner creases, otherwise VG Provenance: The present photograph was originally in the collection of Jimmy Starr (1904-1990, American Screenwriter of the 1930s and later a Hollywood columnist) and bears his stamp to the verso, and was later included in the Alan Robinson collection of cinema autographs (IAA Ltd., lot 884, 29th September 2007).

Also signed by the Mayor of Cagnes beneath a short statement in French confirming the authenticity of Renoir's signature on the original painting, dated Cagnes, 13th January 1917. The lower border also features the Mayor's official circular purple ink rubber stamp. Very slightly irregularly trimmed to the right edge and with a few light surface creases to the lower edge, otherwise VG
GERTLER MARK: (1891-1939) British Painter. A scarce, brief A.L.S., Mark, to one side of a postcard, Kemplay Road, London, n.d. ('Thursday', 2nd July 1931), to his aunt, Annie Gertler. The artist informs his aunt that he shall not be able to come tomorrow evening after all, but hopes to see everyone the following Friday, remarking 'I hope Rene (sic) is better now'. Together with an original unsigned 4 x 5.5 photograph of Gertler in a head and shoulders pose, blindstamped Rough Proof to be Returned and with the credit stamp of Elliott & Fry Ltd of London to the verso alongside various pencil annotations and the ink name of Renee Diamond, and also including an unsigned small 8vo printed catalogue of the exhibitions of paintings and drawings by Clara Klinghoffer and paintings by Mark Gertler organised by Ernest Brown & Phillips Ltd. in the Reynolds and Hogarth Rooms of The Leicester Galleries, London, October 1932, featuring biographical notes of both artists. Some light overall age wear and minor faults, G, 3 Renee Diamond was the niece of Gertler, and a friend of the jazz musician Duke Ellington.
DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English Novelist. A fine A.L.S., Charles Dickens (a good example, with paraph), two pages, 8vo, Tavistock House, 24th April 1853, to Major Lake. Dickens writes to explain his difficulties for an engagement on Friday, 'I am not sure when my Scotch friend departs for Edinburgh, but rather think he will not go until Saturday at the earliest', and further refers to 'theatres and other public places' and that he is 'bound to keep in their call - like a Surgeon'. Dickens adds 'I think our only course is, to trust our better fortune - autumn - and India!' although remarks that there may be a possibility of meeting during the summer. Accompanied by the original autograph envelope signed, addressed by Dickens to his correspondent at Charles Street in St. James's and signed ('Charles Dickens') to the lower left corner. The postage stamp has been neatly removed. About EX The present letter does not appear in the Pilgrim Edition of The Letters of Charles Dickens, however a slightly earlier letter of 15th April 1853 to Major Lake is recorded and the editors suggest that Dickens' correspondent was perhaps Edward John Lake (1823-1877), a British Army officer who was commissioned in the Bengal Engineers in 1840 and was the Financial Commissioner of Punjab in 1865. The novelist's Scotch guest was John Thomson Gordon (1813-1865) Scottish Advocate who served as Sheriff of Aberdeen 1847-48 and Sheriff of Edinburgh 1848-52.

(c.1943-45), to his son, Robert, in Somerset. McNamara writes in a hurried and somewhat illegible hand, expressing his pleasure that his son will be staying safely in the country (‘Ye Gods! What would I not give to be there with Mummie & you!’) and continuing to offer his son advice regarding Hafod (‘I repeat HAFOD is No. I – it gets 100% in all parts and I KNOW.’) and the Royal Air Force, ‘I have all along thought…..that for you the RAF aircrew business is an absolute WASTE. Any damn mutt can fly or bomb or gun!!!! Before it is too late – MAKE UP YOUR MIND AND ACT. I should say your idea of RN is first class. Have a go at it….RAF is…..well you KNOW what I think!!!.....’.
