FARGO WILLIAM: (1818-1881) American Businessman, co-founder of the American Express Company, and Wells Fargo. D.S., Wm G. Fargo, one page, 4to, New York, 29th January 1869. The partially printed document being a certificate, No. 2738, for five $100 shares as issued by the American Merchants Union Express Company, stating in part, 'This certifies that Morris Bradley of Westport Ct. is entitled to five shares in the American Merchants Union Express Company organized under articles of association and agreement dated November 25th 1868…' The verso bears a partially printed declaration that the shares have subsequently been legally transferred. Signed by Fargo, as President, in brown ink to the foot of the document, and further signed by E. P. Ross, as Treasurer, and J. N. Knapp, as Secretary. A cancellation stamp partially covers the signature of Fargo, although clearly still legible, and a neat file hole has been punched at the centre of the document, with very light age wear, about VG

[DREYFUS ALFRED]: (1859-1935) French Jewish Artillery Officer, famously placed on trial for treason, in what became known as the Dreyfus Affair. Lucie Dreyfus (1869-1945) French wife of Alfred Dreyfus. A.L.S., Lucie Alfred Dreyfus, two pages, 8vo, Paris, n.d., to a lady, in French. Dreyfus informs her correspondent, in part, 'We will be very happy, my husband and I to pass an evening with you and Mr and Mrs Bjørnson… you will excuse me for only replying this morning… but it reached me very late have been to an old address'. Together with an autograph envelope, unsigned, addressed by Alfred Dreyfus to Madame Bjørnson at 4 Avenue Ingres, and postmarked Paris, 26th June 1900. With the postage stamp neatly removed. The envelope, due to its size, would evidently have included a different letter to the one offered here. G to VG, 2Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (1832-1910) Norwegian Writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1903.  Bjørnson was, from the beginning of the Dreyfus Affair, a staunch supporter of the French officer.Karoline Bjørnson (1835-1934) Norwegian Actress, wife of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.

Signed commemorative cover honouring the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910, and specifically Camp 60 Antarctica, March 29th 1912, the envelope bearing a postage stamp depicting Robert Falcon Scott, cancelled 12th November 1972. Signed ('Tryggve Gran') in black fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area of the cover. VG

CRONJE PIET: (1836-1911) South African General during the Anglo-Boer Wars of 1880-81 and 1899-1902. Cronje participated in the conclusion of the Jameson Raid in 1896 and also began the sieges of Kimberley and Mafeking, the latter being a siege of 1200 troops under the command of Robert Baden-Powell. A good, rare vintage signed sepia 4.5 x 6.5 photograph of Cronje, the oval image depicting the General in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by A. L. Innes of St Helena and bearing their copyright stamp to the verso. Very slightly, irregularly trimmed to the edges, not affecting the image or signature, otherwise VG The present photograph was taken whilst Cronje was imprisoned, following his defeat at the Battle of Paardeberg and subsequent surrender in 1900, as a prisoner of war in St Helena island. He would remain there until the conclusion of peace negotiations in 1902 and never returned home, instead joining a show at Coney Island in New York.

Book signed, a hardback edition of Above The Bright Blue Sky, First Edition published by Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc. 1928. Signed ('Elliot White Springs') in bold black fountain pen ink with his name alone, beneath printed text, which states, 'This edition, bound in the famous Fort Mill sheeting is limited to one hundred and fifty copies. This copy is number 14 and is presented to you with compliments but you do not have to read it. If you do read it, you do not have to like it. If you do like it, you do not have to tell me about it. If you do tell me about it, you do not have to offer me a drink. Alcohol and flattery both go to my head.' Bound in green cloth. No dustjacket. With light age wear and dust staining to the spine. Together with a T.L.S, Elliot Springs, using a purple rubber stamp signature, one page, 4to, Lancaster, South Carolina, 17th October 1956, to Captain Neil M. Goen, on the printed stationery of the Lancaster and Chester Railway Company. Springs replies to his correspondent's enquiry as to the addresses of former military comrades, comprising Mort Newhall, L.K. Callahan, Bennett Oliver, Lt. Brown, Adjutant, and Major General Bissell. Accompanied by the original envelope. Also including three photographs, unsigned, of Springs, two with comrades of World War I, c.1918, and a third of Springs seated, at the wheel of a car, 1917. Each annotated to the verso, and being part of the collection of his wife Frances Hubbard Ley. G-VG, 5

 [HITLER ADOLF]: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. VON BISMARCK OTTO CHRISTIAN ARCHIBALD (1897-1975) Prince of Bismarck. German Politician & Diplomat. T.L.S., Bismarck, one page, 4to, London, 2nd April 1935, to Miss [Eileen] Cond, on the Prince's personal printed stationery from the German Embassy. Bismarck thanks his correspondent for her kind letter and explains 'Unfortunately it will not be possible to get you a signature of Herr Hitler, as he declines giving his signature to anybody'. In a holograph conclusion the Prince invites Cond to come and see him at the Embassy if she comes to London. Together with a T.L.S. by a member of Hitler's staff at his Chancellery, one page, small 4to, Berlin, 24th March 1934, to Herr Cond, in German. The official writes on behalf of the Fuhrer and states, in part, 'I am sorry to inform you that the exceedingly great demand & the great number of similar requests makes it impossible to fulfil your wishes for a personal signature'. Also including a series of T.Ls.S. etc., by various secretaries and officials on behalf of other famous individuals, most political leaders and members of Royal families, the majority written to Eileen Cond in the 1930s and politely declining her requests for signatures, including representatives of Benito Mussolini (in part, 'I regret to inform you that the Head of the Italian Government, following a practice he has adopted and from which he does not feel he can depart, is very sorry to be unable to comply with your request of granting you his autograph'), King Edward VIII (accompanied by a portion of the original registered envelope featuring the typed address panel bearing a square ERI VIII rubber stamp to the lower left corner), King Leopold III of Belgium, Prince Arthur of Connaught, Queen Victoria Eugenie, Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, Italo Balbo, Maurice Ravel, J. M. Barrie etc. Some light overall age wear and a few letters with paperclip rust stains to the edges. Generally G, 33

[BURNS STEPHEN]: (1921-1943)British Flight Sergeant, Rear Gunner of Lancaster ED936/G AJ-H of 617 Squadron on the Dambusters Raid, 16th May 1943. A pair of flying goggles used by Burns during World War II, the Mark IIIA goggles issued by the Air Ministry and featuring perspex lenses contained in a painted brass surround, with a central hinge and dark brown leather nose cover, also with ram air and exhaust vents (slightly damaged). The goggles have a brown felt backing and the adjustable leather and elastic strap is still present. With the Air Ministry stamp and serial numbers 22C/62 88926/39 to the strap. Some age wear, G Provenance: Accompanied by a copy of a typed inventory of the Burns Archive prepared by a previous owner in 2001 when he acquired the material from Dorothy Mundon, the sister of Stephen Burns. The present goggles are listed on the inventory, and also included in the lot is a copy of a handwritten letter from Mundon to the previous owner explaining that she has been through the inventory and that it is correct.

Signed 4 x 3 magazine photograph by both Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco individually, the image depicting the Royal couple in formal dress, outdoors, in half-length poses. Signed by the Prince ('Rainier, Prince de Monaco') and Princess ('Grace de Monaco') in dark fountain pen inks to a clear area of the border and partially into the image. Neatly laid down to the upper left corner of a backing card, to an overall size of 5½ x 4. Together with a postcard, unsigned, the image depicting photographic portraits of Rainier and Kelly against the backdrop of their residence, a commemorative postage stamp adhered to the front. VG, 2

Signed and inscribed colour 10 x 8 photograph of Castro standing in a three quarter length pose, at a dining table, dressed in his characteristic green uniform. Seated alongside Castro at the table appears another gentleman. Signed ('Fidel Castro') in bold blue ink to a clear area at the centre of the image, and dated 19th October 1986 in his hand, further adding a warm inscription in Spanish to Eloy Perez, presumably the other individual captured in the photograph. Accompanied by the original envelope (some large tears, FR) addressed to Lieutenant Colonel Eloy Perez, marked Personal, and with an official stamp dated 30th October 1986. About EX

NEWMAN PAUL: (1925-2008) American Actor, Academy Award winner. D.S., Paul Newman, one page, 4to, n.p., 13th March 1964. The document being a Release Form between Newman and New Syndicate Co. Inc., stating, in full, 'In consideration of the publicity to be given to me and which may arise herefrom, my consent is hereby irrevocably given to you, your assignees and licensees, and to the Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate, Inc., and its subscriber and licensees, to use my name, picture, or portrait, in publications for editorial and promotional purposes, excluding, however, commercial advertising.' Signed by Newman at the conclusion. With minor tears to the right edge. Together withRobert Redford (1936-  ) American Actor, Academy Award winner. D.S., Robert Redford, one page, oblong 8vo, Los Angeles, 23rd December 1969. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, being an unsecured loan agreement between Redford and City National Bank, Los Angeles, stating, in part, 'On demand, or if no demand made then on March 24, 1970, for value received, the undersigned promise to pay to the order of City National Bank, at its banking house in this city, the sum of one hundred thousand and no/100 dollars with the interest thereon at the rate of 9 per cent per annum from December 24, 1969 until paid.' Signed by Redford to the foot of the page. With a bank stamp, only very slightly affecting the signature, three staple holes, and a few small annotations. G to VG, 2Newman and Redford starred together in two notable films, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), and The Sting (1973), for which Redford was nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards.

Fisher states, in full, 'In England - The Order of the Garter, In France - The ribbon of the Academy, In America - A pencilled head by James Montgomery Flagg… Put 'em all together and they spell, "Local Boy makes good." With minor tears to the edges of the vertical folds. Together with Jules Feiffer (1929-  ) American Cartoonist. Signed printed page entitled 'On Contributions', featuring Feiffer's drawings of President Eisenhower and Vice-President Richard Nixon, alongside a satirical commentary. The page also featuring an 8c American postage stamp depicting Eisenhower and postmarked 10th May 1971. British 1888 Mark II Lee Metford Bayonet By Wilkinson This is an early Edwardian, Lee Metford, 1888 Mark II bayonet manufactured for the British .303 calibre Enfield, Lee Metford rifle. The bayonet blade which is in good clean condition, double edged and unfullered with a medial ridge running from the ricasso to the blade tip. The ricasso of the blade is also marked with a Crown over 'Wilkinson London'. The reverse is stamped with the broad arrow and an inspection stamp. The grips are of wood, held together with two brass rivets.
