President Reitz writes the following (see p. 62) of the book in the reverse of the frontis 'After the battle of Colenso the author of this book came to me and said he wished to become a burgher of the Transvaal "as he was convinced that God was on our side". He therefore took the oath of allegiance to the Transvaal Republic which oath - according to his own showing in this book - he broke because he was of the opinion that his duty as an English subject (a loyal one) justified that God save England from such loyalists. When he took the oath (to the Transvaal) he was already contemplating treachery and playing the spy'. Signed F. W. Reitz with further textual annotations by Reitz. Book with Reitz's library rubber stamp. The inside story of this book! Cloth with slight wear and a few small ink spots, internal hinge detaching from spine, foxing. Sold w.a.f.
