He volunteered for Military service on the 31st August 1914 and was given a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers. He served on the Western Front, being wounded at the battle of Loos in 1915. He was invalided out of the Army but immediately re-enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps, December 1915. After training, he was posted to No39 Home Defence Squadron on 17th June 1916. He scored his first aerial victory on the evening of 23rd September 1916, when he spotted and attacked the German Zeppelin L32. The airship burst into flames, killing all members of the crew, the Zeppelin came down in Billericay, Essex, this drew a large crowd with many souvenirs of the wreckage were took. Sowrey was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O) for this action, gazetted 4th October 1916. He later moved to No36 Home Defence Squadron before being posted to France with No19 Squadron. It was when in France that he continued to score kills, six destroyed and six driven down out of control, bringing his tally to 13. In 1918 he assumed control of 143 Squadron until the wars end. Rare British Airborne 1st Model Step-In Paratroopers Smock, manufactured by Rego Clothiers Ltd, produced in a heavy gabardine khaki coloured material with working central front zip, Newey Patt press stud fittings to the front, storm type cuffs and armpit ventilation. Original shoulder straps. Lower side pockets have the original zips. Interior of the smock has the original “Jackets Parachutist” label, having Rego Clothiers Ltd makers details, size details etc. War Department inspection stamp but no date letter visible. The smock shows light service wear. Overall a very good example of an extremely rare item of British Airborne forces clothing. These smocks were the first examples produced and issued to the newly formed British Airborne Forces. They were a direct copy of the early German Paratrooper smocks, which were also a step-in pattern. These early smocks were issued to the Airborne forces which took part in the Bruneval Raid (Operation Biting). They were soon proved to not be very effective as they were not quick to get in and out of and as a result were very soon replaced by the more commonly found Denison Smocks and Parachute Oversmocks. Very few of these early pattern smocks remain on the collecting market as many were dumped or altered for use after WW2. For more details about these items please see “Denison British Airborne Specialist Clothing From WW2 to the Present Day” by Bruce Wilson.
