The attractive partially printed cheque, completed in Cooper's hand, is drawn on the Otsego County Bank and is made payable to Anna (?) Peabody for the sum of $5. A circular red bank cancellation stamp only very slightly affects Cooper's signature which also has a couple of small ink blots. Small tear to the right blank margin. About VG

Vintage unsigned 2.5 x 2.5 photograph by Hirsch, the engaging image depicting Saint-Exupery seated outdoors in a full length pose, with several large buildings (reminiscent of New York) in the immediate background. Photographer's credit stamp and date, 13th July 1939, to the verso. VG Saint-Exupery went into exile in North America following France's armistice with Germany and lived in New York for several years during World War II.

BUBER MARTIN: (1878-1965) Austrian-born Jewish Philosopher. T.L.S., Buber, one page, 8vo, Jerusalem, 20th July 1961, to Dr. Bernhard Rang, in German. Buber states that he was delighted to have received the good news from his correspondent and continues to explain that he is sending a manuscript separately, explaining 'The letters would have to be surveyed first and photo[graphed crossed through in Buber's hand]copied…I do not wish to let the originals out of my hands' and adding that he has lost two manuscripts in recent years. In concluding Buber writes 'I myself have not yet seen Melzer's new edition, of which you write. I only know of it because Dr. Robert Weltsch who wrote the epilogue (not Schoeps, as you write in your letter) had asked me for material at the time'. Accompanied by the original envelope (postage stamp neatly cut away). VG

MARCONI GUGLIELMO: (1874-1937) Italian Inventor, developed a radio telegraph system. Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1909. T.L.S., G Marconi, one page, 4to, Marconi House, Strand, London, 16th April 1915, to Sir Henry Trueman Wood, Secretary of the Royal Society of Arts. Marconi states that he has his correspondent's letter 'in regard to the list of names of some of the suggested candidates for the Albert Medal for future years' and explains that he had not realised from previous communications that the list should have been returned, adding '…as my search for it has proved fruitless, it is very probable that it has been destroyed, in which case, of course, its privacy will remain intact, while in the event of my coming across it, I shall send it to you without fail'. With an oval Royal Society of Arts received stamp at the head. VG Henry Trueman Wood (1845-1929) British Secretary and Vice-President of the Royal Society of Arts. Marconi had been awarded the Royal Society's Albert Medal in 1914, the year before the present letter, for 'his services in the development and practical application of wireless telegraphy'. The next recipient, in 1915, was the English Physicist J. J. Thomson.

ADLER ALFRED: (1870-1937) Austrian Doctor, Psychotherapist, and the founder of the School of Individual Psychology. Adler's most famous concept is the inferiority complex. A.L.S., Dr Alf Adler, on two sides of a printed postcard with the title Internationale Zeitschrift fur Indiv[idualpsychologie; the remaining text obscured by scuffing caused by the removal of a postage stamp], Vienna, 27th June 1924, to Dr. Rene Allendy in Paris, in German. Adler states that he has sent his correspondent two of his books, following a request from Dr. E. Schlesinger, and adds that both books have already been translated into English and have become influential. He continues to add that he looks forward to Allendy's opinion of them and thanks his correspondent for his efforts in arranging a speech about Individual Psychology at the Sorbonne, further sending a new edition of the Zeitschrift fur Individualpsychologie as a gift. Several postal cancellations very slightly effect the text, but not the signature, and the card is neatly annotated in ink at the base of the verso of the postcard. About VG Rene Allendy (1889-1942) French Pyschoanalyst and Homeopath.

SCOTT ROBERT FALCON: (1868-1912) British Royal Navy Officer & Antarctic Explorer. An attractive vintage postcard issued for the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901, the image depicting an artist's impression of a group of five explorers pulling a sledge through heavy ice and snow, with the printed Latin words Vive Valeque in the upper corner, also with printed captions to the edges indicating that the present card is number 3 (of 4) from Series 3 of Wrench's Links of Empire postcards, and further stating This card was posted from the “Discovery” at the last port of call before sailing for the South Pole, bearing the circular cancellation of the Antarctic Expedition, S. S. Discovery, 1901, hand addressed by Scott in fountain pen ink to the verso to Miss Eleanor Warrender at 87 Eaton Square, London SW, England, and bearing a New Zealand postage stamp and post mark dated 23rd December 1901. Some light age wear and a few minor surface creases, about VG Eleanor Warrender and her family were friends with the Churchill family, Eleanor herself being particularly close to Winston Churchill's mother Jennie, with whom she had served as a nurse on a hospital ship during the Boer War.

British Army Officer, Leader of the successful British Expedition to Mount Everest, 1953. Both have signed with their names alone in blue inks to clear areas above and below an attractive printed design. With a limitations stamp to the verso, numbered 157 of 500. EX

BERESFORD CHARLES: (1846-1919) British Admiral. A.L.S., Charles Beresford, four pages, 8vo, H.M.S. King Edward VII, Channel Fleet, 28th September 1907, to Mr. Luard of the Salters' Company in London. Beresford states that it will not be possible for him to be present to receive the distinguished honour offered by the Salters' Company, explaining 'I have received orders to hold myself and the Fleet under my command in readiness to do honour to the German Emperor….and I should not be able to get away from the Fleet while His Majesty remains in the country. The programme for the reception of the Emperor is not yet complete so that I cannot tell you when H.M. leaves…' and concludes by asking his correspondent to keep the information confidential, 'as my orders are headed “confidential”'. With an oval received stamp of the Salters' Company at the head of the first page. Together with a second A.L.S., Charles Beresford, three pages, 8vo, H.M.S. King Edward VII, Channel Fleet, 29th May 1908, to [Rennell Rodd] ('My dear Minister'). Beresford thanks his correspondent for their charming letter and states that he will be delighted to see him and Lady Rodd again although can not be certain about dates, adding 'If H.M. intends to visit Fleet will you kindly let me know' and further explaining that he will go in Surprise with 'my flag flying' and that he has just finished entertaining the French. Also including a vintage signed postcard photograph of Beresford in a half length pose wearing his naval uniform and cap. Signed with his name alone in dark fountain pen ink at the base of the image. Generally VG, 3 Rennell Rodd (1858-1941) British Diplomat & Politician.

SCHIRACH BALDUR VON: (1907-1974) German Reichsjugendfuhrer, head of the Hitler-Jugend (Hitler Youth) from 1931-40 and Gauleiter of Vienna 1940-45. T.L.S., Schirach, one page, oblong 4to, Munich, 9th March 1932, to [Ernst Rohm], on the printed stationery of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, in German. Schirach, in his capacity as Reichsjugendfuhrer, writes to his superior and states, in full, 'I ask that note be taken of the following memorandum of the Reich Leader of the H[itler] J[ugend], with which I agree completely. I think it is intolerable that the 'Federation of German Girls in the Hitler Youth' be removed from the structure of the youth organisations and be subordinated to the Organisational Department of the NSDAP, which has no experience in the field of youth organisations'. To the verso Ernst Rohm (1887-1934, German Officer, an early Nazi leader who was co-founder of the Sturmabteilung. Executed on the orders of Hitler and Himmler following his involvement in the Night of the Long Knives) has written his reply, a T.L.S., Rohm (in bold indelible pencil), one page, oblong 4to, Munich, 20th March 1932, to Schirach, stating 'As I have no experience in the Youth movement, I have to go for the most part by the statements of the experienced youth leaders on my staff. I think the argumentation of the leader of Hitler Youth is so well founded that I see no reason to oppose it. On the contrary, I think the suggestions on the last page (6) of the memorandum of von Rentelns are close to the intentions of the Reich Organisational Leader I'. Rare. Two files holes to both the left and right edges and with an official stamp and a few pencil annotations to Schirach's letter. About VG

An unusual First Day Cover commemorating Eisenhower and featuring his portrait, individually signed by each of the twelve Honorary Pall Bearers at his funeral, comprising Edgar Eisenhower (1889-1971) American Lawyer, elder brother of Dwight Eisenhower, Milton Eisenhower (1899-1985) American Educational Administrator, younger brother of Dwight Eisenhower, Omar Bradley (1893-1981) American General of World War II, J. Lawton Collins (1896-1987) American General of World War II, Lauris Norstad (1907-1988) American General in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, Wade Haislip (1889-1971) American General of World War II, Alfred Gruenther (1899-1983) American General of World War II, Leonard Heaton (1902-1983) American Surgeon General who served in World War II, George W. Anderson (1906-1992) American Admiral who served in World War II, Lewis Strauss (1896-1974) American Businessman & Philanthropist, a major figure in the development of nuclear weapons and power in America, G. Gordon Moore ( - ) American Colonel, brother-in-law of Eisenhower and John Moaney (1914-1978) American Army officer, Eisenhower's personal valet. All have signed in bold blue or black inks with their names alone, largely to clear areas. The cover bears a postage stamp featuring Eisenhower's portrait and is postmarked at Abilene, Kansas, 14th October 1969. VG Eisenhower was interred on 2nd April 1969 in a small chapel in the grounds of the Eisenhower Presidential Library in his hometown of Abilene in Kansas. He was buried as a General of the Army. There were ten Honorary Pall Bearers at Eisenhower's funeral service in Washington DC on 31st March 1969, all but one of whom also served as Honorary Pall Bearers for Eisenhower's interment. Milton Eisenhower fell ill and was hospitalised for the latter event and was replaced by General Andrew Goodpaster.

'there is NO longer an enemy to defeat' WORLD WAR II: An extremely rare, historically important document, one page, oblong 4to, Cipher Office, Second Army, 8th May 1945. The original black ink teleprinter document, marked Immediate and Secret is a copy of the final Intelligence report of World War II issued by G-2 section of General Courtney Hodges 1st United States Army to all subordinated G-2 sections via cipher at 0420 on 8th May 1945. The message reads, in full, 'SECRET This is the final ISUM from HQ FIRST US ARMY. For the first time in ELEVEN months there is NO contact with the enemy. The victory which was won on OMAHA and UTAH beaches has reached its climax. Today belongs to the men of this army who fought and conquered the enemy from NORMANDY to the ELBE. There is NO enemy situation to report for there is NO longer an enemy to defeat'. This example bears the purple oval Cipher Office stamp and date of the British Second Army commanded by Lieutenant General Miles Dempsey. With the standard series of file holes to the left and right edges and with a few small tears and minor areas of paper loss to the upper and lower edges, not affecting the text. Some very light overall creasing, about VG THE EMOTIVE FINAL INTELLIGENCE REPORT OF WORLD WAR II DECLARING '…THERE IS NO LONGER AN ENEMY TO DEFEAT'. Miles Dempsey (1896-1969) British General of World War II who commanded the British Second Army during the D-Day landings of 6th June 1944 and throughout the rest of the campaign in North-Western Europe. We can find no records of another example of this signal having ever been offered for sale at auction before.

A Georgian Ring, three green step cut stones spaced by pairs of rose cut diamonds, in yellow claws within a decorative mount, on a scroll decorated mount, finger size G1/2, in box The ring is in good condition, commensurate with age. One of the green stones has a noticeable chip. All bear scuffs and scratches. They are hard to get a definite test result on, but are probably emeralds. It bears no hallmark, nor stamp, but in our opinion it would test as gold. The rose cut diamonds are each estimated to weigh 0.03ct. Their colour and clarity have not been assessed as the ring ought to be professionally cleaned first, and this condition, alongside closed back settings does not allow for accurate judgement.
