Great Britain - QV (line engraved) : (SG 29a) 1855 Experimental printing on Neal’s Steam Press, accorded major SG catalogue listing status SG29a (SG Specialised C8(I)H 1d. red-brown, Die II, alphabet III, plate 22 imperforate, without gum (as catalogued), unused right hand sheet margin multiple block of 18 (3x6), lettered HJ/HL, MJ/ML, complete with full marginal inscription (including the desirable ‘rosette’) instructing the position to affix a stamp ‘above the address and towards the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the letter’. (Nothing has changed 165 years later). Plates 22 (and 25) were used for an experimental printing on a Steam Press and were never officially issued. One sheet of each was found circa 1960 and was cut up. All imperforate examples extant come from these sheets, therefore this marginal rosette inscriptional multiple is unique. Condition report: The block has a horizontal crease through row ‘H’ and ‘M’ and is variously creased between the rows, aside of the lower row - none of which affect the very fine appearance of this block, closed marginal split through rosette. Holcombe 1993 colour photo-certificate of authenticity. Forming one of the most important pieces in the historic Sir Garwaine Baillie collection auctioned by Sotheby’s c.2006, the multiple realised c.£33,000= including buyer’s premium in that famous auction and currently catalogues SG£54,000= as singles (‘from’ £3,000 each), excluding multiple premium: what price the unique positional multiple? Reserved at £26,400= start price upon a £33,000 estimate. Perhaps a unique opportunity to acquire one of the most important pieces of classic British philately. Cat £54000 (image available)

Orange wmk Crown CA, Perf 14, 1882 Straits ovptd 'B' Type 1, variety overprint double, part Bangkok CDS used example, one of the rarest of the double overprints. An exceptionally difficult stamp to locate in cds condition, due to delicate colour, this being a particularly fine example, described on the BPA colour photo-certificate (2019) as bearing manuscript line at foot, creases (absolutely minimal), soiled (barely) and a little rubbed (hardly), is genuine - most of which, apart from the authenticity, is irrelevant because a better example hardly exists. Crucially, clearly defined double 'B' overprint. Exceptionally rare. Cat £4250 (image available) [US4]

Meath; and Winchester. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars on 6 May 1961, and served with them in Sharjah, Trucial Oman States, for seven months in 1961, undertaking desert operations and patrols. The following year he served as a Troop Leader in Aden for five months, before proceeding to Brunei. Promoted Lieutenant on 3 February 1963, he served with the Regiment in Borneo during the emergency there. In a letter home to his mother he describes the situation thus: ‘... Had a bit of a thrill on Tuesday- fired our big guns, and some of the Gunners had a bang too at a couple of camps this side of the border. The Gurkhas follow up party collecting two more terrorists without any loss. The Naval helicopters fired some of their French Guided Weapons at the position too- first time I think that guided weapons have been used by British Forces offensively - history being made before my eyes- very spectacular they were too. We watched from the gun position, five miles away - a great way to fight a war!’ Bowly’s final posting was to Germany in 1965, where he led a very large three power convoy through Brunswick practising for a possible relief of Berlin. He resigned his commission on 3 April 1965, and was subsequently employed as a Bloodstock agent on both sides of the Irish Sea.
