Plowman, George T The Natal Civil Service List 1895 (with folding map) 220 x 150 [See also Lot 308] The 1895 issue of the Natal Civil Service List was the first of the series, superseding the civil establishment returns in the colony`s blue books. On the front paste-down is an 1895 date-stamp of the Chief Engineer of the Natal Government Railways. The full title-page is reproduced in one of the images. The contents far exceed the expected civil establishment and pension lists, which take up only a third of the space. In addition, the colony`s Constitution is reproduced, as are the Civil Service Act, 15 miscellaneous lists (consuls, JPs, advocates, attorneys, land surveyors, field cornets and so on), the Civil Service Calendar, the Civil Service Board, examination results and papers, as well as several indexes. Indeed, one need hardly look further for details of the state of the Natal Colony in the last decade of the 19th century. The red hard pebble-cloth boards, gilt lettered to the front and the (sunned) spine, are in excellent condition, with the extremities only lightly rubbed. The binding is tight. The endpapers are sunned and the first and last text leaves are foxed. The contents - xvii + 167 pp + an excellent copy of the folding colour map of the Colony - are complete, unmarked and undiscoloured. Very Good Pietermaritzburg [Printed by M W Watson] 1895

There is another owner signature on the dedication page and the front page edge. The remains of a school prize label are on the front paste-down. All-in-all, this is an acceptable copy of a now rare reference book. [Footnote. Professor Bosman, whose favourite breed was the Africander (illustrated on the frontispiece), is not to be confused with Professor Bonsma (then a young man included in Bosman`s acknowledgments) of the Mara Research Station in today`s Limpopo Province, who famously developed the Bonsmara (from Bonsma and Mara, mainly from the Africander, which may now be the country`s most populous cattle breed.] Good+ South Africa Central News Agency 1932

Hobhouse, Emily (translator) Tant` Alie of Transvaal. Her diary 1880-1902. Translated from the Taal (1923) 185 x 135 This book, one of Emily Hobhouse`s last and rarest, has not previously been listed on these auctions. It contains one of her most eloquent prefaces, with tributes to Lloyd George, Tant` Alie Badenhorst, who died in 1907, and Olive Schreiner, who described the manuscript as ` . . . a revelation of human nature; I think it is wonderful` and promised to write the preface, but who also died before the book was published. The forewords are by Tant` Alie`s son and grandson. `Translated` may give the wrong impression. Badenhorst`s diary was not transcribed from its original state - `not easy to decipher` and when the translation was completed `the European War was almost upon us` and the book `had to be laid aside`. Hobhouse was helped by many, including Deneys Reitz, `with words no dictionary registers`. The author describes the writer of the diary, whom she met in 1902, as having a `fragrance of holiness`. Hobhouse knew all the people and many of the places in the diary, so could vouch for its accuracy. She had decided to translate and publish the diary because Tant` Alie ` . . . much wished [that it] should be published for [her and other] children`s children, desirous that future generations should know and avoid the cruelty of war`. The green cloth-boards, gilt lettered to the spine and blind ruled to the front, are moderately rubbed. The binding is tight The front endpapers have a bookseller sticker on the paste-down and Pieter Erasmus`s attractive ex-libris label on the front free leaf, while on the back paste-down is a small library rubber stamp. The contents - 320 pp of prelims, text and epilogue - are unmarked and undiscoloured, making this a collectable copy. Very Good London George Allen & Unwin 1923
