It was named after the German airship pioneer, Ferdinand von Zeppelin, who was a count (Graf) in the German nobility. The airship flew 590 flights covering over 1 million miles, it was operated by a crew of 36 officers and men. It was scrapped for fighter aircraft parts in 1940.
