Unframed Together with another photograph by Cecil Beaton, Sir Michael Duff (1907-1980), Raimund von Hofmannsthal (1906-1974), Duff Cooper (1890-1954), Lady Caroline Duff, née Paget (1913-1973) Lady Elizabeth von Hofmannsthal, née Paget (1916-1980) with her two children, Sarah Arabella Marjorie von Hofmannsthal (b.1942) and Octavian von Hofmannsthal (b.1946) (sitters in order of left to right), Gelatin silver print, Inscribed (verso) 18.7 x 23.5cm (7 3/8 x 9 1/4in.) Unframed (2) Provenance: Private collection, a local lady who was employed at Plas Newydd By direct descent to her daughter The photographer, Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) was a British fashion, portrait and war photographer. Beaton is renowned for having a distinguished style characterized by taking advantage of the perfect shutter-release moment. This enabled him to produce striking, high-definition images that were ideal for fashion photography and high-society portraits. He was employed in the United States by Vogue and Vanity Fair, and photographed celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Coco Chanel and Katherine Hepburn, as well as the artists Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol and Georgia O'Keeffe. Upon returning to England in the late 1930s, he produced portraits of the Royal Family and the British high society, of which this set of photos is a part of. Beaton was also a friend of Rex Whislter, whom he photographed and was painted by. The two photographs show the members of the prominent families Paget, Duff and Hofmannsthal. The first photograph shows Sir Michael Duff and Raimund von Hofmannsthal standing next to Duff Cooper. Sitting on the armchair is Lady Caroline Duff, née Paget, and her younger sister Lady Elizabeth von Hofmannsthal with her two children, Sarah and Octavian. The second photograph depicts Lady Caroline Duff holding her son Charles, who was adopted after her marriage with Sir Michael Duff in 1939. Lady Caroline Duff, née Paget (1913-1973) was the first daughter of Charles Paget (1885-1947), 6th Marquess of Anglesey and his wife Lady Victoria Manners, and eldest sister to Charles Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey (1885-1947). She developed a relationship with painter Rex Whistler (1905-1944) after he was commissioned by the Marquess to paint a mural in the dining room of Plas Newydd, where it can still be admired. Whistler became a friend of the family and spent much time with the family during the 1930s, producing several paintings of the Marquess' eldest daughters. The numerous casual portraits of the eldest daughter, as well as the famous nude study from the Plas Newydd collection are a testimony to Whistler's fascination with Lady Caroline. Five years after Whistler's death in 1944 during the Second World War, Lady Caroline married Sir Michael Duff, 3rd Baronet (1907-1980), grandson of the fourth Earl of Lonsdale and godson of Queen Mary. Together, they adopted Charles David Duff (b.1950). Duff Cooper, 1st Viscount Norwich (1890-1954) was a military, diplomat and politician who served as Secretary of State of War and as Minister of Information. He was related to Sir Michael Duff on his mother's side, Lady Agnes Duff (1852-1925), daughter of James Duff, 5th Earl of Fife. Lady Elizabeth Hester Mary von Hofmannsthal, née Paget (1916-1980), was Lady Caroline's younger sister and the second child of the 6th Marquess of Anglesey. She was maid of honour at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, in 1937. She was also the subject of Rex Whistler's art, seem in a reclining portrait from 1938 that hangs at Plas Newydd. Lady Elizabeth was married in 1939 to Raimund von Hofmannsthal (1906-1974), the son of Gertrud Schlesinger and Austrian dramatist Hugo von Hofmannsthal (a friend of composers Richard Strauss and Jean Sibelius, and producer Max Reinhardt). They had a daughter, Sarah Arabella Marjorie von Hofmannsthal (b.1942) and a son, Octavian von Hofmannsthal (b.1946). Condition Report: Lady Caroline Duff and her son - The edges and corners with scuffs and abrasions. Crease to the upper right corner. Staining and scratch to the right edge. Sir Thomas Lawrence P.R.A. (Bristol 1769-1830 London)Portrait of Jane Allnutt with her pet spaniel, within a painted oval oil on canvas, unlined61 x 50.4cm (24 x 19 13/16in).Footnotes:ProvenanceLeft by the sitter to her half-brother John Allnutt (1803-1881)Violet Susannah Knox, his daughter Vicesimus John Knox, her sonHolliss Allnutt Knox, his son, and thence by descent to the present ownerThe enchanting subject of this unrecorded portrait by Lawrence is Jane Allnutt (1818-1845), the daughter of one the artist's more significant patrons whose family had made their fortune in the wine and brandy trade in the 18th century. John Allnutt (1773-1863) lived in some style in a palatial home in then-rural Clapham, and used his considerable wealth to buy from the great artists of the day; works by Constable and Turner graced the walls of the family home including the latter's The Devil's Bridge, St. Gothard of circa 1803-4 which bore a label in John's hand recording that he had gifted the painting 'to my daughter Jane.' In addition to a full-length portrait of John by Lawrence, we know he painted several other portraits of the family, amongst which a second study of Jane painted in 1826. Judging from that unfinished portrait (K. Garlick, Sir Thomas Lawrence, 1989, no. 21) we can assume that the present study was painted around 1821-22 when Jane was three or four. Like the 1826 portrait, it has descended through the sitter's family after her death in 1845, the year of her marriage to Henry Carr (1817-1888) at Holy Trinity Church, Clapham. Lionized by the aristocracy, Lawrence was known for his good nature and charm, although his closest friendships were amongst the professional men and their families who were his earliest patrons. Not least of these were the families of John Julius Angerstein, Sir Francis Baring and indeed John Allnutt, who is known to have helped Lawrence in his financial difficulties: £5,000, for example, is said to have been paid to Allnutt following the artist's death. Many of Lawrence's best portraits during the last decade of his life were of children: indeed, his importance in this regard was recently recognised when the National Gallery in London agreed to buy the artist's celebrated Red Boy for £9.3 million. This dazzling tour de force (which was the first painting to be displayed on a British postage stamp) was described by the Gallery this year to be a unique opportunity 'to acquire an exceptionally important painting by one of the finest European portraitists of the early 19th century, which is of outstanding significance for British national heritage.' Previously dismissed as superficial, owing to the apparent facility of his technique, none of Lawrence's followers matched the fresh immediacy of his brushwork, with the possible exception of John Singer Sargent, and today, especially following the 1979 exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, this great artist's stature has been reappraised: he is now widely believed to have been the finest portrait painter of his generation in Europe. Lawrence's achievement as a painter was based largely on his confidence in his largely self-taught powers as a draughtsman. As appears to have been the case with the present portrait, he usually drew the figure directly on his canvases before applying the paint, rarely producing separate preliminary sketches. His admiration of the great draughtsmen of the past influenced his own work as well as stimulating him to acquire outstanding examples of the work of the Old Masters. Unlike such artists as Sir Joshua Reynolds, who delegated such chores to studio assistants, Lawrence was also remarkable for insisting on choosing the dress, accessories and settings of his sitters with particular regard to the age and concerns of the sitter. This intimate depiction of a close family friend is the perfect example of Lawrence's extraordinary ability and dedication to his art.We are grateful to Peter Funnell and Brian Allen for their assistance in cataloguing this lot.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Registration No: NNT 586W Chassis No: T4DCYAL314800 MOT: ExemptSupplied new to the city of Aachen in GermanyImported to the United Kingdom in 2015 and just one UK keeperAccompanied by a Sunbeam Lotus Owners Club Dating CertificateRestored by the late-vendor for the use in historic rallyingEarly A-Series exampleThe Talbot Sunbeam-Lotus was one of the most exciting hot-hatches to come out of the 1970s. Commissioned by Chrysler, Lotus was tasked with producing an effective entrant for international Group 4 rallying - to attempt to beat the dominant Ford Escort RS’s. Lotus utilised a 1.6 GLS shell and installed a 2.2-litre version of their 16-valve four-cylinder engine (the 'Type 911', a close relative to the Type 912 found in S2 and S3 Esprits) which was mated to a 5-speed ZF gearbox. Offered only in Black and Silver initially, they launched in 1979, with the high-compression 2174cc twin-cam engine breathed through two twin-choke Dell'Orto carburettors.Developing 150bhp, the twin-cam engine was very tuneable (up to over 200bhp) for rally use and being rear-wheel drive and weighing only 960kgs, could reach 0-60mph in just 6.6 seconds. The design by Lotus didn’t stop at the engine only however, with the suspension and exhaust system being Lotus’ designs. Immediately proving extremely effective on the international rally stage, the Sunbeam-Lotus finished 1st, 3rd and 4th at the 1980 Lombard-RAC rally, Britain's round of the World Rally Championship. In 1981, the Sunbeam Lotus brought the entire manufacturer's championship to Talbot.Chassis number T4DCYAL314800 was manufactured in the Linwood plant being finalised on the 6th of March 1980 according to the accompanying Sunbeam Lotus Owners Club Dating Certificate and is understood to have been supplied new to the German city of Aachen in left-hand-drive configuration. Fitted with the aforementioned 2172cc Lotus Type 911 16-valve engine mated to the five-speed ZF manual gearbox, the Sunbeam-Lotus is still finished in the original Embassy Black (albeit without the Grey stripe). Originally fitted with the Grey cloth Lotus interior upholstery, ‘NNT 586W’ now features a rally prepared interior including Sparco seats, roll-cage and Brantz rally meters.Remaining on the continent until being imported into the United Kingdom in 2015 by the late-vendor, the Talbot-Lotus was retained by him until being offered today, making just one UK keeper to date. The late-vendor, a rally enthusiast and participant, uprated the Talbot-Lotus for use in historic rallying. Restored by him for competing in said historic rallies and competing on a few occasions in events (including as pictured with him at the helm), the Talbot-Lotus entered into dry storage following the vendors passing approximately two years ago until around six weeks previous. Benefitting from mechanical fettling so the Lotus would run and drive, ‘NNT 586W’ is likely to still require some further recommissioning following the period in storage.Offered with a history file comprising documents regarding the importation and registration; a selection of German paperwork; a few past MOT certificates; the aforesaid Sunbeam Lotus Owners Club Dating Certificate; Dastek Dynamometers report from 2016 and a current V5C document. Interested parties should note that while being registered with the DVLA post-importation to the United Kingdom, the Talbot-Lotus has been registered to state the vehicle service number rather than the chassis number. Furthermore, since the catalogue went to press we have been contacted by the Membership Secretary / Treasurer of the Sunbeam Lotus Owners Club to say that the SLOC Dating Certificate on file was issued in response to a written request and not as the result of a first hand, physical inspection by a SLOC Official. Please Note: The five spare alloys, spare differential and ten spare tyres are in storage in Buxton but are not present at the venue.Footnote: PLEASE NOTE: The late owner of this lot imported it from Europe as a restoration project in 2015. He subsequently obtained a Dating Certificate from the Sunbeam Lotus Owners’ Club which included the following information (our addition in italics):‘This vehicle has been inspected (from owner supplied photographs) by the undersigned and verified that the original VIN and Service ID tags are present. The chassis number has been re-stamped on the bonnet slam panel; it bears the hallmarks of being a genuine stamp by the Talbot agent in Germany as a result of the car being prepared for competition by them and the original stamp being obscured by the strengthening process’.On the basis that the car has been (a) used for competition, (b) prepared as such and (c) extensively restored, we do not know whether it retains its original bodyshell or not. An upmarket range with superior performance and price tag to match, the 8 Series was designed to be a standalone premium model although seen to be the successor to the 6 Series. The 8 Series was offered in 830i, 840Ci and 850i/Ci form and, when introduced in mid-1993, it was fitted with a 4 litre, V8 engine mated to either a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. From mid-1995, production phased in the newer 4.4 litre M62B44 engine, the 4.4 Sport offered a better driving experience with considerably more torque.Manufactured in 1997, this 840 CI Sport was UK-supplied when new having been ordered for ‘Dealer Own-Use’ by Sytner Nottingham.
