A .577/450” Martini Henry Mark II Artillery Carbine, 37” overall, barrel 21½” with government sale mark at breech, the frame engraved with crown over “Enfield/ 1876/ II” and with number “22”, the butt with Enfield storekeeper’s stamp, government sale mark, and brass disc stamped “3/ 1894/ V.HLD.A/ 559” (Highland Artillery Vols ?), with sling swivels. GWO & QGC (pitted and worn, no cleaning rod, the breech cut). .
A watercolour portrait of a WWI Indian Infantry officer Subedar Manta Singh, in its original gilt frame with gilt window mount, the back bearing the stamp of the Whitehall Theatre of War, 10¾” x 12¼” overall. GC. Subedar Singh was wounded rescuing a wounded fellow officer during the battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915, was shipped back to England where he was a patient in the Royal Pavilion and General Hospital in Brighton, where he later died. The portrait was apparently painted at the Royal Pavilion in 1915, by a local artist, M J Barret.

Both covers also feature the Commemorative FIFA postage stamp issued by Monaco in 1964 for the 60th Anniversary of the ruling body, both post marked at Monaco, 3rd December 1964 (in recognition of the qualifying matches). Both covers further feature a Harrow & Wembley post mark dated 30th July 1966 (the date of the final, England vs. West Germany) as well as the special commemorative boxed post marks for the World Cup final, and one of the covers also features the England Winners 4d postage stamp post marked at Harrow & Wembley on the First Day of Issue, 18th August 1966. CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. Autograph Envelope Signed, addressed in Churchill’s hand in dark fountain pen ink to Mrs. [George] Scrivings at 12 Bolton Street, London W, England. Signed (‘W S Churchill’) to the lower left corner. With an Egyptian postage stamp affixed and post marked at Khartoum, 24th December 1907. With the blind embossed crest of the Colonial Office to the verso. Some light overall age wear and a few minor stains, about VG Churchill’s correspondent was Mrs. George Scrivings, the widow of Churchill’s servant, who were both employed at the first house Churchill owned in Bolton Street, just off Piccadilly. George Scrivings accompanied Churchill on a journey to East Africa in 1907 but was never to return as he caught a tropical illness and died there. Churchill, grief-stricken, buried him close to the Victoria Falls and on his return home not only made a lifelong provision for George's widow but also gave financial help for many years to his bereaved mother too. Churchill served as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1905-08.

COCHRANE JOHN: (1930-2006) British Test Pilot associated with Concorde. A Commemorative Cover issued for the Test Flight of Concorde G-AXDN at Tangier, featuring an image of the aircraft. Signed by Cochrane in black ink with his name alone to a clear area. The cover features a Moroccan postage stamp and is post marked at Tangier, 15th April 1974. With the printed address of the El Minzah Hotel in Tangier to the verso. Together with Mike Bannister (1949- ) British Airline Pilot, the Chief Pilot for British Airways' Concorde fleet 1995-2003. A Commemorative Cover issued for the 40th Anniversary of the Formation of the Air Transport Auxiliary on 1st December 1939 and featuring a colour image of various aircraft in flight. Signed by Bannister in black ink with his name alone to a clear area and also signed by two fellow crew members. Post marked at Jersey, 1st December 1979 and also featuring a green British Airways Concorde cachet. Some very light creasing to the head of Cochrane's cover, otherwise VG, 2
CONCORDE: Brian Trubshaw (1924-2001) British Test Pilot, the first to fly Concorde, April 1969. Signed First Day Cover issued for the 20th Anniversary of the First Scheduled Commercial Concorde Flight, London to Washington, and featuring a colour image of the aircraft. Signed by Trubshaw in black ink with his name alone to a clear area. A very light smudge only slightly affects a few letters of the signature. Post marked at Heathrow, 24th May 1996 and again on 28th October 1996 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the airport; John Cochrane (1930-2006) British Test Pilot, co-pilot to Trubshaw on the maiden flight of Concorde 002 in April 1969. Signed Royal Air Force museum cover issued to commemorate the Farnborough Air Show of September 1970 and featuring a colour image of an early aircraft in flight. With a Concorde cachet stating that the cover was flown on Concorde 002 on a development test flight. Signed by Cochrane in black ink and also signed by his co-pilot Peter Baker in blue ink, both with their names alone to clear areas. With a Concorde postage stamp affixed, post marked 7th September 1970. VG, 2

WORLD CUP: A rare Scot Landy cover issued to commemorate Britain's National Stamp Exhibition (Stampex), 18th - 26th March 1966, featuring seven different postage stamps issued by various countries and most associated with various World Cups, post marked at Stampex, 18th March 1966, and at Harrow and Wembley, 18th August 1966. Signed by Hilderaldo Bellini (1930-2014) Brazilian Footballer, Captain of the first Brazilian team to win the World Cup in 1958 and by Djalma Santos (1929-2013) Brazilian Footballer, a member of the World Cup winning teams of 1958 and 1962. Bellini has signed in black ink to a clear area at the head of the cover, adding 1958 in his hand, and Santos has signed in black fountain pen ink with his name alone across a clear area at the centre of one of the postage stamps. The cover bears the address cachet of the collector Ronald Antinoris. VG The National Stamp Exhibition of 1966 is remembered for being the venue of the theft of the Jules Rimet Trophy. Stanley Gibbons' stamp company had received permission to place the Trophy in the Exhibition on condition that it would be under guard at all times. The Exhibition was held in the Westminster Central Hall and opened on 19th March 1966, and the World Cup was a major attraction. Two uniformed officers guarded the trophy around the clock, reinforced by two plainclothes officers during the day. Nevertheless, on 20th March, guards noticed that the display case had been broken into and the Trophy stolen. A Flying Squad investigation commenced, involving anonymous telephone calls and ransom demands, before the Trophy was famously recovered by David Corbett and his dog Pickles on 27th March 1966.

Both covers feature various post marks including Kensington, 6th January 1966 (the date of the World Cup draw at the Royal Garden Hotel) and several from Harrow and Wembley dated 30th July 1966 (the day of the final between England and West Germany) including the special boxed commemorative post mark for the final. Both covers bear the address cachet of the collector Ronald Antinoris. VG, 2 An accompanying typed caption states that the 1964 Monaco postage stamp was affixed to one cover to represent the play off games taking part between 1964-66 and that only ten of each of the FIFA commemoratives were serviced for the Final at Wembley and for the Final and Victory, also post marked at Wembley.
EVEREST EXPEDITION 1924: A vintage postcard issued for the Mount Everest Expedition of 1924 and featuring an image of Mount Everest from the base camp in the Rongbuk Valley, Tibet, and bearing a facsimile signature and greeting by Captain John B. L. Noel (1890-1989) British Mountaineer & Filmmaker, official photographer to the Everest Expedition of 1922 who also filmed the Expedition of 1924. The card is individually signed at the base by three members of the Everest Expedition of 1924 comprising Noel Odell (1890-1987) British Scientist & Mountaineer, T. Howard Somervell (1890-1975) British Missionary who also participated in the 1922 Expedition, Bentley Beetham (1886-1963) English Mountaineer, Ornithologist & Photographer, and Arthur Wakefield (1876-1949) British Mountaineer, a member of the Everest Expedition of 1922. The postcard, issued to fund and promote interest in the 1924 Expedition and Noel's film, is hand addressed to the verso to an individual in Cambridge (the name and street address heavily crossed through in dark ink) and bears an Indian One Penny postage stamp post marked at Darjeeling, 6th August 1924, and also bears a Mount Everest Expedition stamp and cachet from Base Camp at Rongbuk, 1924.
