Studio of Miguel Canals, Spanish 1925-1995- Trouville Beach, after Eugène Boudin; oil on canvas, bears signature 'E. Boudin' (lower right), with the artist’s studio stamp ‘STUDIO M. CANALS’ on the stretcher, 30 x 50 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Bonhams, Chelsea, 7 December 1999, lot 109; where purchased by the present owner. Note: Boudin (1824-1898) started off painting seascapes, but he found a niche in the 1860s producing small scenes of fashionable beach resorts along the Normandy coast. These showed well-to-do holidaymakers from Paris and further afield, who arrived at the fast developing resorts of Trouville and Deauville to sample the health-giving benefits of sea-bathing and the vibrant social life there. He produced a few hundred of these paintings, which have come to define his reputation, something he himself foresaw when he wrote: 'I shall do something else, but I shall always be a painter of beach scenes.’ This composition is typical of Boudin’s many sketches of beaches in showing groups of people ranged along the beach in a frieze-like composition, the whites, reds and blues of their costumes standing out against the silvery greys of the sea and sky. The original painting by Boudin, which is housed in a private collection, extends both upwards and to the right.
Studio of Miguel Canals, Spanish 1925-1995- Afternoon by the Sea, after William Merritt Chase; oil on canvas, bears signature 'W.M. Chase' (lower left), with the artist’s studio stamp ‘STUDIO M. CANALS’ (on the central stretcher bar), 50.5 x 70 cm. Provenance: Anon. Sale, Bonhams, London, 3 December 1996; where purchased by the brother of the present owner. Note: The present work is conceived after a painting by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), a central proponent of Impressionism in his native America. The original painting was executed in 1888, at the height of Chase's creative energy and output, and is housed in a private collection. In this poignant maternal scene, a woman cradles a young child in her lap, whilst an older child looks out, presumably longingly, at the sea below, her back to the viewer.
Studio of Miguel Canals, Spanish 1925-1995- A sunlit Dutch street scene, after Adrianus Eversen; oil on panel, bears signature 'A. Evensen.' (lower right), with the artist's studio stamp 'STUDIO M. CANALS' (on the reverse), 53.9 x 39.9 cm. Provenance: Anon. Sale, Bonhams, London, 3 December 1996; where purchased by the brother of the present owner. Note: Adriannus Eversen (1818-1897) was a Dutch painter whose distinctive cityscapes depict somewhat imagined settings, rather than the more faithful representations of street scenes produced by contemporaries such as Cornelis Springer (1817-1891). The present scene is characteristic of Eversen's output, and clearly relates to his strikingly similar composition which sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam,18 October 2005, lot 66.
Studio of Miguel Canals, Spanish 1925-1995- Place au Beurre Quimper, after Lucien Simon; oil on canvas, bears signature 'L Simon' (lower left), with the artist’s studio stamp ‘STUDIO M. CANALS’ (on the central stretcher bar), 50 x 60.1 cm. Provenance: Anon. Sale, Bonhams, London, 3 December 1996; where purchased by the brother of the present owner. Note: Lucien Simon (1861-1945) was a member of the 'Bande noire', a group which included artists Charles Cottet (1863-1925) and Edmond Aman-Jean (1858-1936), and whose form of Impressionism was influenced by the realist approach of Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) among others. Simon was fascinated by the life and customs of Brittany, and it is to this theme that he returned throughout his career, including in his painting 'Place au Beurre Quimper', from which this works derives, and which sold at Sotheby's, London, 22 November 2011, lot 238.

Prosper Marilhat, French 1811-1847- A caravan at rest in a mountainous landscape; oil on canvas, signed 'P. MARILHAT' (lower right), with 'Durand-Ruel, Paris' canvas stamp verso, 36.3 x 65 cm. Note: The present composition is characteristic of those by the Orientalist painter Prosper Marilhat, who studied under Camille Roqueplan (1802/3-1855) in Paris before spending two years in Egypt in 1831-32, accompanying the diplomat, explorer, and botanist Charles von Hügel (1795-1870). This experience proved formative for Marilhat, as it is the sketches from these travels which formed the basis of the artist's most successful subsequent works. Marilhat's oeuvre contains a number of expansive landscape views just like the present work, with tall palm trees punctuating the horizon, before the hazy mountains which stretch into the distance beyond. The canvas stamp dates the painting to between 1833 and 1856, when the firm were located on Rue des Petits-Champs.

The influence of these artists is evident in the delicate, sinuous studies of female nudes for which Pascin was best-known, and of which the present reclining figure is a wonderful example.
Circle of Francesco Furini, Italian 1603-1646- Portrait of a young woman, head and shoulders, adorned with pearls; oil on canvas fragment, bears ink stamp for the National Gallery of Prague 'Narodni Galerie, vývoz' ('National Gallery, export') verso, 40.5 x 41.5 cm., (unframed). Follower of Pietro da Cortona, Italian 1596-1669- The Rape of the Sabine Women; and Alexander the Great receiving the family of Darius; each oil on canvas fragment, each bears ink stamp for the National Gallery of Prague 'Narodni Galerie, vývoz' ('National Gallery, export') verso, the first 60 x 47.5 cm., the second 59.5 x 47 cm., two (2)., (both unframed). Throughout his career, da Cortona also painted several scenes from the life of Alexander the Great, illustrating the historical subject’s popularity with the artist, his followers, and their patrons. The scene here, with the family of Darius before the tent of Alexander, also features in a fresco cycle painted by da Cortona and his pupils at the Palazzo Pitti, Florence.
