A parquetry commode Dutch mid-18th century with a moulded mottled grey marble top with two drawers and veneered with a diamond trellis on walnut with 19th century gilt-bronze rococo mounts h.86cm. w.104cm. d.53cm. During the second half of the 18th century there was a large demand for French furniture in Holland especially from wealthy merchants living in Amsterdam or The Hague. Such large quantities found their way to Holland that in 1771 a ban was imposed on the import of French furniture in order to protect local craftsman. Cabinet makers like Andries Bongen and Matthijs Horrix both originating from Germany anticipated on the high demand by producing furniture in the French taste. Unfortunately most surviving Dutch pieces remain anonymous as cabinet makers were not required to stamp their work. Although it is not possible to attribute this commode the overall design realtes to makers like Bongen and Horrix. For a comparative piece see European Furniture and Good Decorations Sotheby's Am terdam 5th October 2004 lot 34. The commode offered in Amsterdam was from the Trompenburgh Collection. W
