[Vivisection]. Report of the Royal Commission on the Practice of Subjecting Live Animals to Experiments for Scientific Purposes, with Minutes of Evidence and Appendix, HMSO, 1876, xxiii + 388 pp., lib. blind-stamp to title, modern library buckram, rubbed, folio. The inadequacy of Martin's Act of 1822 for the protection of animals and Miss Cobbe's anti-vivisection crusade led to a call for new legislation and resulted in the Royal Commission of Enquiry. The subsequent vivisection act 1876 gave protection to experimental workers and was an important landmark in the history of British pathology and physiology and led to the formation of the Physiological Society. The six Commissioners included T.H. Huxley and Sir John Erichson, fifty-nine mostly medical men gave evidence, including Charles Darwin (Freeman 1275), David Ferrier, Michael Foster and Joseph Lister. (1)
