An Apprenticeship Indenture for an Oyster Dredger – aged 10. Essex Apprenticeship indenture 1779 for James Layzoll to John Andrews to be an apprentice oyster dredger in Essex. Pre printed document on a single leaf of paper^ with embossed revenue stamp^ and ms insertions. In fine fresh condition^ approx 13x8 ins. Layzoll was a poor child of the parish aged just 10 and his enforced apprenticeship which in those days was akin to a prison sentence^ was to last until he became 21 years old. If he broke his apprenticeship before then he could be imprisoned and publicly whipped.
Falklands War – autograph – Sir Rex Hunt^ Civil Commissioner to the Falklands during the War map of the Falkland Islands^ bearing the stamp of the Argentinean occupying forces and signed by Hunt to base. Approx size 19x14ins. This is a good example of the official British map of the Falklands produced in 1966 which was clearly captured by the Argentinean forces during the war and given their official stamps – one a title stamp to top left hand corner and the other on the body of the map being the official stamp of the military government of the Malvinas. It was clearly one that was then recaptured by the British and signed by Hunt to re-assert the Sovereignty of the islands. A rare item.
Postal History three manuscript letters with European postal history features^ the first bearing a postage fee service stamp dated April 1860^ the second^ a letter from Bordeaux to Marseilles dated June 1782 bearing a stamp with stylized trefoil lily over the letter ‘B’ as a sign of the city of Bordeaux and the third bearing stamps from the Duchy of Parma dated 1855.
WWII – Autograph - Rudolf Hess extremely rare autograph letter signed with initials ‘R.H.’ dated April 27th 1947 written in pencil on a slip of paper approx 7x4ins^ clearly cut from a larger document. This note was written at a time when Hess was just about to begin his life sentence in Spandau Prison. This is the only example of a letter written from him at this time that we have ever seen. In it^ he repeats a request for a fresh pair of braces and a button to be sewn on his overcoat. The nature of this note bears out the character of Hess^ who was one of seven prisoners who were assigned to Spandau prison in July of the same year as this note. Hess was regarded by his guards as the laziest of the seven^ and a man who regarded menial tasks as below his dignity. Together with original envelope bearing the address to Frau Hess and overprinted with the Spandau Allied Prison mark and stamp for the prison to verso.
