Lewis with his blind-stamp on front free endpaper, Acheson crest in gilt on upper cover, a.e.g. (Earls of Gosford), and inscribed "Acheson 1837" on flyleaf. Charles Lewis, (1786 - 1836) was one of the most prominent bookbinders of the 19th c.; who bound many books for William Beckford`s library at Fonthill Abbey.

A very large German for the French market bisque headed doll with sleeping brown eyes, pierced ears and moulded teeth. Heavy quality fully jointed body with mama-papa pull string mechanism. Wearing the original cream silk boys costume including a hat labelled `Deux Passages Grand Magasin ? Paris` and shoes marked Bebe Jumeau Depose. The head impressed `15 DEP` and red stamp. Probably marketed by Jumeau, circa 1905. 35in H
