*Wellington (Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke, 1769-1852). Autograph letter signed ‘Wellington', Walmer Castle, [Kent], 28th September 1840, to Lord Robert Grosvenor, saying that his house is quite full and has been for a week, and that he cannot tell how much longer this will continue but will write with an invitation when there is an alteration, asking to be remembered to Charlotte, one page with integral address leaf and penny black with Maltese cross cancellation stamp and two dated postmarks adjacent to the torn wax seal, 8vo. An early specimen of the newly introduced penny black, the world's first official adhesive postage stamp, which came into circulation on 2nd May 1840. (1)
