dating: about 1870 provenance: Papal States, Silver skull with pontifical stamp, silvered radial pattern for a Papal Tiara and gilt, decussate heys, crest with oval featuring Pius IX's monogram (papacy: 1846-1878), scarce removable support (for a gala uniform) with black horsehair and beautiful chiselled lion's muzzle, chin-strap with scales and chain, silvered rosette and plume-holder with white and black plume in black feathers; the internal part made of brown leather and red silk cap. The Noble Guard was established as a regiment of heavy cavalry by Pius VII on May, 11th 1801. It consisted of the former 'Lance Spezzate' company, and then was joined by the Pontifical light cavalrymen. The corps was always a volunteer one - its members were not paid for their service, and they had to buy themselves their uniforms (worldwide considered one of the most elegant and beautiful). Due to this conditions, the Noble Guard was formed by very few members, and all the recruits were drawn from noble families in Rome very close to the Holy See. The Noble Guard was abolished by Pope Paul VI in 1970. Those who were serving the Noble Guard were offered the title of 'The Pope's Gentleman', but they all refused it. height 33 cm.
