Handwritten RAF Lecture Notes of 1935 by 33307 F/O Francis G Ede, Killed in Action 8th June 1940. Notes are based on lectures given by Capt. de la Bere, Professor of English Subjects. An interesting RAF Notebook Form 407 filled with F G Ede’s notes on the Royal Air Force History together with de la Bere’s lecture note sheets (over 20) pasted in. F G Ede was a student of Professor de la Bere, certain pages have his name stamp and comments on the student’s work; Ede was commissioned in 1937. Rupert de la Bere was Professor of English at Cranwell (and editor of the Journal of the RAF College) between 1921 and 1938 and taught many who served during WWII, he also taught and was friends with T E Lawrence; one page of F G Ede’s notes is on Lawrence’s Campaign. F/O Ede was a Bermudian flying Gladiators from HMS Glorious, he was killed in the action against the Scharnhorst June 1940 when HMS Glorious was sunk.

A Substantial Family Archive from Hildegard Dicke of Ottweiler, the Saar – over 275 Letters and Postcards (150+ from the 1930s; 25+ items of Feldpost) from late 19th to late 20th Century Including Family Members Serving in the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe plus Family Photos and Social Ephemera. Letters addressed to the Dicke and Bost families. Earliest letter dated 1876, five years after the Franco-Prussian War. Passing into the 1930s they show HD’s address changing from Kaiserstraße to Hermann-Göringstraße during the Third Reich. Feldpost letters to Uffz. Peter Bost who served in the Luftwaffe in France at least 1940-1942, a letter from October 1942 describes new rationing about to start affecting cabbage, sausage, potatoes, the next sentence how nice the weather is back home, photo of Peter Bost in Luftwaffe uniform as a Gefreiter, his Lohnsteuerkarte for 1944/46. Feldpost from Werner Dicke includes reference to Russian PoWs captured, in temperatures of -7 his fingers felt ice-cold, November 1943. Some letters are in Sütterlin script, one such of April 1933 refers to the NSDAP and an SS-Mann. Envelope containing items from Wilhelm Dicke – Hitler Jugend Urlaubsbescheinigung for 1936, his Mitglieds-Karte for the Reichsluftschutzbund dated 1935. Diaries from 1934 and 1940. Pre-war letters home from Wilhelm Dicke (Hildegard’s brother?), a Panzer-Schütze, later Gefreiter and Unteroffizier in 5. Komp. Pz Regt 7 referring to his Panzer training, a letter from his CO to his father stating Wilhelm is missing October 1939 but hope is high for his return – a family photo from 1934 is inscribed Wilhelm geboren 8/2/18, gefallen 21/9/39 Polen. Wartime Feldpost letters from Werner Dicke (Hildegard’s brother) serving in 1. Artillerie Ersatz Abteilung 69. Another member of the Dicke family is serving in 5 Komp. Panzer Regiment 7 in 1937, the letters are sealed with silver Pz I stickers, and one letter to another Gefreiter Wilhelm Dicke serving with 1. Aufklarungs Regt. 9 in 1939. RAD – Reichsarbeitsdienst name labels to Dicke, Wilhelm of RAD Abteilung 6/323 which was based in the Saar. PoW (Kriegsgefangenenpost) postcard from Peter Bost (m. to Dori Dicke) to his son Manfred (born 24/4/35) dated March 1946. A receipt from 1937 shows the Dicke brothers subscribing to the journal of the paramilitary organisation Stahlhelm. Amongst the general family Feldpost are several bereavement cards for soldiers killed during the war. A letter to Hildegard from mid-1941 praises the army for taking Crete and the navy for sinking HMS Hood and that the British Empire must be ‘hanging on a silken thread’. Items of family ephemera include ration card and savings books for 1917/1918/1919; a school book for Hildegard from 1925, her diaries from 1929, 1930, 1931-1933 mentioning Hitler as Reichs Chancellor, and 1934-35. A 31pp illustrated catalogue for the Nazi publisher Eher-Verlag c.1934. A 19th century Militär-Paß to a family member dated 1879 with stamps for 1 Rheinfeld Artllirie Regt No 8 and Feld Artillerie Regt No 31 (first two pages trimmed out). A folder of mid-20th century postal covers and stamps looks to be collection of Manfred Bost; a stamp album of Saar stamps; Amongst the family names mentioned are: Carl, Wilhelm, Conrad, Waldung Eintz, Sunhild Borchert née Eintz; Ewald Dicke, Karoline Dicke née Eintz, Wilhelm, Wilhelm, Werner Dicke - Obergefreiter late 1943 - and Hildegard Dicke (born 31/07/13) - worked as a justice admin December 1942 – November 1943, called up for Flak service November 1944 through to April 1945, appears not to have married; Peter Bost, Dori Bost née Dicke, Manfred Bost. An extensive grouping of social ephemera worthy of further research into domestic life before, after and during the Third Reich.
Historically Important Original D-Day (Normandy) and Other Maps, one from 2 July 44 showing German Defensive positions in great detail around Carpiquet and Buron south to Marcelet. 1:25,000, defence overprint with key to rear. This is a map we have never seen before and provides a detailed picture of the Defences, down to mg nests for the 12SS at this time (. c.65 cms x c.55cms). Also cut down map, hand coloured of the area around Epron etc, defence key at rear ( c.18cms x 10cms), Another Defence overprint map of area east of the Caen canal from Gorineville sur Merville down to Sonnerville, key to rear and Army Signals stamp. Interesting map of Caen dated March 1944 1:25,000, Also Defence overprint of Delmenhorst 1:25,000 April 1945 with some defences shown and key to rear, c.65 x 55cms). Note another map with hand annotations for Bremen March 1945. Another c.30 geographic maps either of France or Germany for the same period. Note with this lot is "The History of the 2nd Battalion the Lincolnshire Regiment in North-West Europe 6th June 1944 and After" c.50pp., privately published and rare. Henry Scott Bridgwater b.1864 Mezzotint after the original by John Hoppner entitled 'The Frankland Sisters' signed in the margin and bearing OZO Printsellers Association blind-stamp, approx 53 x 64 cms, framed and glazed together with four 19th Century Prints. The first depicting a family harvesting entitled "August", the second depicting the hops harvest entitled "September", third depicting girls feeding chickens entitled "March", lastly hay-raking, all approx 24 x 29 cms in oval mounts, glazed and framed, with verse for each season to verso, published by Leighton Bros Drury Lane London.

A Regency rosewood and marquetry games table by Morant, with chequerboard inlaid top having two fall leaves and two shallow drawers with boxwood outlines and knop handles, with dummy drawers to the reverse and raised upon two tapererd flat profile columns and a turned stretcher, with finely inlaid foliate scroll decoration, and scroll feet with brass castors, stamped to the underside G I MORANT, *(9)1 NEW BOND STREET, 73cm H, 80cm W fully extended, 38cm D. Morant, George, London, interior decorator, cabinet maker, carver and gilder (1790-1839). In 1790 he founded a well-known firm of decorators and cm. His earliest bill-heads appear to date from the beginning of George IV's reign, when he described himself as 'Ornamental Painter and Paper-hanging Manufacturer to their Royal Highnesses the Dukes of Sussex and Cambridge, No.88 New Bond Street, London. House Painting and every article in the Gilding Line.' The firm's Bond St shop front was designed by John Buonarotti Papworth, 1817-19, and the business was style George Morant & Son, 1825-39. Messrs at the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign, on the recommendation of the Duchess of Gloucester. Morant took out a Sun Insurance Policy on 15 March 1824 for £5,200 including £1,000 on household goods in house, workshops and warehouse communicating with house in tenure of a tailor, and with a house and store at 4 Wood St; and £4,200 on drawings, engravings and pictures. [D;Colvin;PRO, LC3/60;GL, Sun MS vol.495, ref. 1014866] Between 1820-22 Morant decorated Farnborough Hill and a small house adjacent to it at Farnborough, called the Pavilion for Mrs Luke Foreman, widow of a wealthy merchant. His bills for paper hanging survive, and he appears to have supplied much of the furniture. [DEF] G.Morant & Sons, u, supplied furnishings for Wynyard Park, Co. Durham, for Charles William Vane, Marquess of Londonderry, c.1823-34. [Durham RO, Londonderry papers, D/LO/E 492] In 1833 the firm submitted a bill to the Duke of Sutherland for 'papering & colouring' at Bridgewater House, costing £584 2s 11d. In 1837 they charged £1,766 and £280 for work at Stafford House, and in 1838, £450 for furniture supplied there. [Staffs. RO.D/593/R/2/13/20;R/1/26/26] Payments are recorded to.Morant by the 6th Earl of Cardigan for Deene Park, Northants. [C. Life, 1 April 1976, p.811] The stamp of Morant's is recorded on Boulle pieces at Mamhead, Devon, to which the firm supplied the state bed for Queen Adelaide's visit in 1838. [C. Life, 2 June 1955; Conn., June 1977, pp.144-45] The firm also supplied furniture to Melford Hall, Suffolk, for Sir William Parker. [Nat. Trust Studies, 1981, p.72].
