JEAN BAPTISTE MAUZAISSE (1784-1844) AMBASSADEURS DU SULTAN TIPOO SAIB ADMIS A L'AUDIENCE DU ROY LE.10 AOUST MDCCLXXXVIII The Ambassadors are named in the lower margin as Mohammed Derviche Khan, Achbar Ali Khan and Mohammed Osmann Khan [sic], signed Mauzaisse, pencil with touches of brown ink, laid on original mount with ink title, unframed Subject 25 x 21.7cm; mount overall 32.5 x 28.5cm. * Tipu Sultan's chosen envoys,Muhammad Dervish Khan, Akbar Ali Khan and Muhammad Uthman Khan, were received by Louis XVI at Versailles in August 1788. Muhammad Dervish Khan was also painted by Vigee-Lebrun in the same year (Private Collection). Upon the Ambassadors' return to India, their failure to have achieved the desired alliance with the French resulted in their summary beheading by Tipu Sultan. Paul Maze was born in Normandy, the birthplace of impressionism. Fittingly, his biography is titled ‘The Lost Impressionist’, although he is also frequently described as a Post-Impressionist. His immersion in both movements is unsurprising. He knew Monet and Renoir, and Pisarro was an early teacher. He friends included Derain and Bonnard and he sketched with Raoul Dufy. George Braque was a lifelong friend and he was particularly close to Vuillard who encouraged his use of pastel. Maze had a strong Scottish connection; his first army post was as a volunteer interpreter with the Scots Greys. He served in both world wars and was a much-decorated hero who was awarded the Croix de Guerre, Legion D’honneur, the Military Medal and the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He developed a close friendship with Winston Churchill, whom he taught. He was a frequent visitor to Chartwell. Churchill wrote the preface to Maze’s autobiography and the forward to his 1939 New York exhibition. Then, he wrote “with the fewest of strokes, he can create an impression at once true and beautiful” His work was in the collection of the late Queen Mother and is held in many public collections, including the Tate and at Glasgow. This collection came from the artist’s family. It includes his favourite subjects, Trooping the Colour, still life, yachting, the Sussex landscape of his adopted country and, especially, his beloved wife, Jessie.

A vintage Betel motor car artist's palette with engraved decoration, the top opening to reveal a fitted interior stamped with makers stamp to the boot 25.5 cm long, a carved wooden tortoise 13.5 cm long and a pine and oak framed stool with plaque inscribed "I was born in the service of the Royal Air Force in 1939 and served as Operations Room Plotting Table at Driffield and Topcliffe. I have seen and heard joyful and sorrowful scenes and stories and have also supported tired crews on their return back from operations. At the suppression of the Convents the volumes fell into the hands of Cicognara by whom they were given in an exchange to Canova from whom they passed after his death to Maestro Canova his brother, by him they were sold to Sigr. Francesco Posaro & by him to me. E.C. Venice 1842". One of Cheney’s albums of Italian drawings, presumably purchased following the death of Robert Low in 1909, whose stamp is printed on the 19th century backing paper of the drawing, formed the basis of an exhibition of Tiepolo drawings in May 1928 at the Savile Gallery in London, run by Mark Oliver and Richard Edward Arnesby ('Ted') Wilson.
