Brunei. 1941 unissued 3ct blue-green mint block of ten, being the two left columns of the sheet. This is from the new 50-set plate with the first two columns of the 60-set plate excised, so that the former R1/4 re-entries appear on R1/2. Gum streaky although not excessively so, hinged on selvedge only, a little splitting; a most desirable block of this rare and under-rated stamp, ex Dr Wood. SG footnote (£2500)

Ascension Postal History. 1867 envelope to Devonport from 'J. Clark Boiler Maker Ascension' and countersigned by 'John Hawkins for Co. Officer', Clark rating as a seaman, with 1d red Plate 97 paying the concessionary rate, cancelled by '250' numeral of Devonport. Light Ascension CDS of DE 2 67 to left of the stamp. A tear through the backflap affects the top of the envelope, affecting the CAPE PACKET/DEVONPORT CDS on the reverse, and there is a little staining. Plate 97 is not recorded in the SG listing. Sismondo Certificate of 2004, misstating the Plate number as 87. SG Z2 (from £3250)
Ascension Postal History. 1875 envelope to Westmoreland from Matron E.M. Reade of the Hospital, addressed to her father, the Revd. Reade. As Matron, she was rated as a seaman, and entitled to the privilege postal rate of 1d; the letter is countersigned by John Bradley, the Staff Surgeon in Charge. The stamp (1d red, Plate 178) is cancelled by Plymouth duplex of DE 31 75 and has an Ascension CDS of DE 15 below to the left. Roughly opened, affecting the backflap only. SG Z2 (from £3250)

A brightly patterned shirt, by Hung On You, London, 1960s, cotton and linen shirt, with bold asymmetrical pattern of semi-circles in red and green on a white ground, four-button closure, rounded shirt tails, satin label at nape lettered in purple 'Hung On You a Londres', with size printed in black above '15 1/2', some very light soiling at cuffs and neck, chest 102cm (40ins), length 75cm (29.5ins), sleeve length 60.5cm (23.75ins) Upmarket London fashion boutique Hung On You (1965-1969) was owned by the designer Michael Rainey, and was famous for its avant-garde approach to clothes. Its standard lines consisted of psychedelic shirts, kipper ties, military uniforms, shimmering sharkskin suits, frilly shirts, jackets with velvet cuffs, and other such flamboyant garments. Its avant-garde approach to clothes, and the clients it attracted, such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and Terence Stamp, meant that it became part of the culture of the swinging sixties, and the shop is considered now as occupying an important place in fashion history: 'Its customers were the real departure from the routine, for they were almost exclusively the new male dandies invented by the 1960s, a taboo-breaking mixture of social and rock aristocracy as never encountered before.' Bouleaux [beech trees] Eugene Besnard 1887Paris vendor stamp on verso Eugene Antoine Samuel Lavieille was the younger brother of famous wood engraver, Jacques Adrien Lavieille. He studied under Camille Corot and was one of his best students in landscape painting. Lavieille made his Salon debut in 1844 and received multiple medals in the period from 1849 until 1870. He participated in four world exhibitions in 1855, 1862, 1867, and 1878; and his works are in the collections of many Museums, including New YorkÕs MoMA and Musee du Louvre in Paris.
Circle of Henry William Pickersgill (British, 1782-1875) Portrait of Mrs Anthony Hamond (1806-1900), née Mary Anne Musters of Annesley Park, Nottinghamshire, wearing a blue dress, red cloak, pearls in her hair, seated, three-quarter length oil on canvas, unlined, in a good English frame 75 x 62cm (29 x 24in) Provenance: By descent within the family of the sitter Westacre High House, Norfolk and thence by descent to the present owner Other Notes: Mary Anne Musters married Anthony Hamond of Westacre in 1828 at Colwick Hall, Nottinghamshire. The present portrait is thought to have been painted in 1840. John Musters, Mary Anne's father, was a keen huntsman and was Master of the Pytchley hunt in Northamptonshire. It was through hunting that the Musters family met the Hamond family of Norfolk. Three of the Musters children subsequently married Hamond siblings. Unlined. Bitumen problems. Needs attention. Face nicely painted and a grand frame Oil on canvas which is unlined. The canvas has a supplier's stamp for Charles Roberson with a tax stamp. The canvas is slightly slack on the stretcher. The paint layer shows drying defects with uneven surface texture and wide drying cracks. The varnish is very yellowed with some staining and surface dirt. The frame is in a poor condition with losses to the moulding and tarnishing.
Mather Brown (American, 1761-1831) Portrait of Sir Edward Astley, 4th Bt. (1729-1802) of Melton Constable Hall, Norfolk oil on canvas, unlined, oval 73 x 60cm (28 x 23in) Provenance: Westacre High House, Norfolk, and by descent to the present owner Literature: Sir Frederick Duleep Singh, Portraits in Norfolk Houses, Norwich: Jarrold and Sons, 1928, Volume 2, p.372; Dorinda Evans, Mather Brown (1761-1831) - An Early American Artist in England, Middletown, Conn. Wesleyan University Press, 1982, p.68 (in the Library at Westacre High House) Other Notes: Mather Brown was a portrait and historical painter, born in Boston, Massachusetts, but active mostly in England. Brown was the son of Gawen and Elizabeth (Byles) Brown, and descended from the Reverend Mr Increase Mather on his mother's side. He was taught by his aunt and around 1773 (age 12) became a pupil of Gilbert Stuart. He arrived in London in 1781 to further his training in Benjamin West's studio, entered the Royal Academy schools in 1782 with plans to be a miniature painter, and began to exhibit a year later. The present portrait was painted in 1790 when Sir Edward Astley was 61 years of age. Tax stamp on the back of the canvas. Canvas maker's stamp "J Poole, High Holborn, British Linen. 1508-23-85". Cleaned in June 1958. Cleaner reported: "Unlined canvas, two small patches on back of canvas". Chips to the frame. Two old repaired tears. Oil on canvas which is unlined. There is an artist's suppliers stamp for J Poole on the reverse and a tax stamp. The canvas has two patch repairs on the reverse. The painting is attached to a rectangular wooden stretcher, some keys are missing and canvas tension is slightly slack. Apart from the small tears in the canvas, the paint layer is in a good condition. There are small areas of retouching covering the areas of damage. The varnish is dull and yellowed, but even. There is a layer of surface dirt present. The frame is missing a section of the moulding along the upper edge. There are a few scattered losses to the gilding.

An antique opal and diamond brooch and a modern Australian opal brooch, the first a knife-edge bar brooch set to the centre with an oval cabochon opal in a heart-shaped surround with ribbon bow surmount all set with rose cut diamonds, unmarked yellow precious metal, length 4.2cm, in period fitted case; the second designed as the Southern Cross constellation, with five oval opal cabochons as terminations representing the stars, on knife-edge bars, length 4.3cm, yellow precious metal with stamp unclear; both test for 14-15ct gold (2)
Silvio Gazzaniga (1921-2016) for Bertoni of Milan Olympic trophy for 1960 Paralympics bronze, in the form of a figure beneath an arch with Olympic rings to the top manufacturer's stamp on marble base 42cm high. This trophy was probably awarded to a Paralympian for outstanding individual performance at the first international Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960. Silvio Gazzaniga was a well renowned sculptor, most notably creating the FIFA World Cup Trophy, which was chosen by the committee in April 1971. His designs also include the UEFA Cup Trophy (1972), the UEFA Super Cup Trophy (1973) and the Baseball World Cup Trophy (2001).
A very good heavy Victorian brass and metal Dog Grate, in the Adams stye, with raised decorated arched back over a large basket grate with pierced apron, on brass fluted and tapered legs with large classical urn finials, with Registration stamp on reverse, 85cms high x 86cms wide (33 1/2" x 34").
