Local Interest - Politics - an early Victorian election epistolary solicitation, sent from the Southern Division of the County of Leicester to James Esq, Leamington, Warwickshrie, under the auspices of its chairman John Biggs, on behalf of their Liberal Candidates for Parliament, Colonel Edward Cheney and Thomas Gisborne, Jun., Esq [son Thomas Gisborne of Derby, an Anglican priest and member of the Wilberforce's Clapham Sect], printed July 5th 1841, franked Queen Victoria one penny stamp, three postal stamps for Leicester July 7th 1841, Leamington July 8th 1841 and Leamington again July 15th, 1841, broken red wax seal; another, sent to the Revd. George Hake, franked Queen Victoria one penny stamp, two postal stamps for Leicester 7th July 1841 and Warwick July 9th 1841, broken red wax seal (2)The Revd George Hake (1784-1848) held the living of Ellastone, Staffordshire (then Warwickshire), with other livings in the age of plurality, rather late in life after leaving Cambridge without a degree and a career in the army. Hake was an evangelical preacher; very ugly, stuttering and porcine; though poor he was unscrupulous about getting into debt, which he did frequently and to a considerable degree; he concealed meanness under a rather excessive air of benevolence; it comes as no surprise that he was direspected by his parishioners.
