JOHN LENNON OWNED PHOTOGRAPHS - HOW I WON THE WAR & ROBERT FREEMAN. Two original 1960s studio prints to include a previously unseen Robert Freeman image of John on a sledge (14.5cm x 10.5cm) plus an image taken by a German photographer (possibly a surname of 'Timm' on 6th September 1966, depicting John Lennon on set during the filming of How i Won the War (height 24 cm and width 15.5cm, photographer's stamp to verso). Provenance: originally given to Bernard Brown (Apple publishing manager) by John Lennon when John moved to New York. The current owner was a good friend of Bernard Brown and purchased them approximately 35 years ago. They have been in his private collection since then. Includes letter of provenance from the vendor along with copies of correspondence between the vendor and Bernard Brown.

CADORNA LUIGI: (1850-1928) Italian General and Marshal of Italy, Chief of Staff of the Italian Army 1914-17 during World War I. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Cadorna in a head and shoulders pose wearing his military uniform. Signed ('L. Cadorna') in bold black fountain pen ink with his name alone to a light area at the head of the image. With an official circular purple stamp to the verso. Together with a second vintage postcard photograph of Cadorna standing in a full length pose in uniform and featuring a facsimile signature at the base of the image, signed by Cadorna in fountain pen ink to the verso with a three word Italian greeting in his hand. Also including a slim 8vo printed menu card for a banquet in honour of Cadorna at the Ristorante Balena on 24th June 1924, signed by Cadorna in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area. PERSHING JOHN J.: (1860-1948) American General of World War I, Commander of the American Expeditionary Force on the Western Front 1917-18. A.L.S., John J. Pershing, one page, 8vo, Place de la Concorde, Paris, 21st August 1931, to General Vanderbilt, on the printed stationery of the Hotel de Crillon. Pershing acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter which has been forwarded from Washington and remarks 'It will give me pleasure to act as Chairman of the Honorary Committee of the ball as you suggest'. With integral leaf (bearing a circular ink stamp with the name C E Warren at the centre). VG Pershing's correspondent may have been Brigadier General Cornelius Vanderbilt III (1873-1942) American Military officer, a member of the Vanderbilt family. Vanderbilt III served in World War I and, amongst other honours, was awarded with the Distinguished Service Medal in 1919.
CRONJE PIET: (1836-1911) South African General during the Anglo-Boer Wars of 1880-81 and 1899-1902. Following his defeat at the Battle of Paardeberg Cronje surrendered, and he and his wife were sent to St. Helena Island prisoner of war camp where they remained until the peace negotiations were concluded in 1902. Fountain pen ink signature ('P. A. Cronje') on a slim oblong 8vo piece neatly removed from the conclusion of an official document, dated Klerksdorp, 1st September 1892. Countersigned by W. H. Neethling, a Special Magistrate, and bearing his official circular purple stamp. Annotated in pencil to the verso by the noted autograph collector Ray Rawlins, observing that Cronje's signature is 'rare'. [RICHTHOFEN MANFRED VON]: (1892-1918) German Rittmeister of World War I, a Flying Ace officially credited with 80 victories, thereby making him the highest scoring Fighter Ace of World War I. Richthofen, known as 'The Red Baron' and considered the ace-of-aces, was awarded with the Pour le Mérite (Blue Max), the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern and the Iron Cross. Richthofen was Killed in Action at the young age of 25. An interesting original pair of pen and ink diagrams, each drawn and signed (with the initials of an unidentified draughtsman) on a 4to sheet of paper, n.p. (London?), n.d. The diagrams, executed in blue and red fountain pen inks, are maps showing where Manfred von Richthofen was shot down and killed near Vaux-sur-Somme on 21st April 1918, one detailing The Red Baron's course towards the site of his crash after having followed the River Somme. The official circular stamp of the Imperial War Museum's Art Department appears in the corner of each diagram and the sheet is lightly mounted to a card. Together with two reproduction photographs (10 x 8 and 8 x 6) of Richthofen in different group poses alongside other pilots, one bearing an Imperial War Museum stamp to the verso (negative Q63148) and lightly mounted to a 4to card with a typed caption laid down above the image stating that it shows Richthofen after his 62nd victory, 22nd September 1917, and with a further pencil annotation beneath the image in the hand of Robert Wright stating, in full, 'This is an interesting group picture of Richthofen. There are plenty of good photographs of him, but this is one of the more natural ones'. Generally VG, 3 Provenance: The three items were previously part of the research archive belonging to Robert Wright (1906-1992) British Historian and Biographer who served as Hugh Dowding's personal assistant during the Battle of Britain and later wrote Dowding and the Battle of Britain (1969).
