Waffen-SS Overseas / Side Cap & Document Grouping Attributed to Prisoner of War Mathias Bichinger SS-Totenkopf Division, good worn example of the field grey overseas / side cap as worn by members of the Waffen-SS. The insignia has been removed from the cap but the outline of where it was once present can still be seen. Grey cloth lining to the interior with size ink stamp. Side cap shows some service wear. It would appear that he wore this cap whilst being a prisoner of war which is why the insignia has been removed. Accompanying the side cap is a archive of original paperwork including citations for the Demjansk campaign shield dated 1943 when he was serving with a SS Pioneer battalion of the Totenkopf division, Wound badge in silver whilst serving with SS Panzer Grenadier regiment of Totenkopf division and Iron Cross 2nd class citation when he was at the SS Hospital in Wien (Vienna). The Iron Cross citation has a signature of Heinrich Himmler but we believe this to be a facsimile. Other documents in the grouping include recommendation for the wound badge which states he lost his leg when he stood on a mine, prisoner of war paperwork including release documents, period publications and personal record files.
