Ephemera – broadside- Crimean War – Siege of Sebastopol scarce broadside issued by the Sunderland Herald dated October 2nd 1854 to commemorate the Fall of Sebastopol with woodcut engraved view of the City taken from the sea and text featuring the text of the official dispatch. Revenue stamp to top right hand corner a little dusty and in need of careful pressing but otherwise unblemished.
Hitler Spring flowers still life watercolour on card executed in pastel shades signed ‘A Hitler 1928’ small red stamp of HOA Horvath to bottom left hand corner. Ms note signed ‘Adolf Munchen 1933’ to base – approx 290x190mm – Observation: the handwriting and the signature on the note conforms with the known handwriting of Hitler at that time.

There are scratches and dints along with a thinning of the shank through wear. The ring would benefit from a polish. A Viennese cold painted bronze model of an owl, early 20th century, stamped ‘GESCH, 6250’ and with faint stamp ‘B’ within a vase for Franz Bergmann to the underside, 13.5cm high (lacking one glass eye) Condition Report:** Painted surface is original but is worn and rubbed in places, particularly the exposed extremities. One glass eye is missing. The other might have been re-glued into place. Otherwise, perfectly satisfactory shape.

British Provincial, Cumberland, Workington, Workington Bank, One Guinea, 3 June 1809, no. 192/302, for Wood, Smiths, Stein & Co, signed by Walter Wood (Outing 2428A; Grant 3318). Bankruptcy stamp on back and pinholes, otherwise about very fine The Workington Bank, established in the wake of an agreement between the mining magnate John Christian, later Curwen (1756-1828) and Walter Wood, banker, Benjamin Thompson, solicitor, David Fletcher, ropemaker and Robert Smith in Workington, opened for business in 1801. Previously, Curwen’s own notes, first issued in 1797 (Finlay, p.48) had circulated, but Curwen scrupulously redeemed all his outstanding scrip in order to promote the Wood issues. The failure of the London-based bank of Kensington, Styan & Adams in 1812 led to the Workington Bank being declared bankrupt with total liabilities of £120,000
British Provincial, Dorset, Shaftesbury, Shaftesbury Bank, Ten Pounds, 10 October 1843, no. 698, for W.B. Brodie & Thomas King, signed by W.B. Brodie (Outing 1919B; Grant 2586). Split and rejoined at centre, printed bankruptcy stamp and handwritten dividend stamp on front, pinholes, otherwise fine, rare William Bird Brodie (1780-1863), banker, bookseller and stationer, Whig MP for Salisbury 1832-43, was the proprietor of the Salisbury and Winchester Journal from 1808 until he was declared bankrupt in 1847. By 1811 Brodie had also taken over the banking business in Salisbury begun in the 1770s by Benjamin Charles Collins (1758-1808), nephew of the founder of the newspaper. Brodie, a former officer in the Wiltshire Militia, was appointed Lt-Col of the Salisbury Volunteer Infantry, a unit formed in the wake of the civil uprising which affected the city in November 1830 (Bennett, OMRS Journal, December 2009, pp.239-42, including a lithograph portrait of Brodie). He was an associate of the photographer W.H. Fox Talbot, published pamphlets on banking and slavery, as well as a book of poems. Thomas King (1806-63), a London banker whose country seat was at Alvediston, Wiltshire, entered into the banking partnership in 1834; after the bank failed he became a gentleman farmer at Norrington
