The geometrical patterning recalls the design of the 'Syrian' tin of 1903 ;‘Wood & Ivory Box’ - 1931 by Huntley, Boorne & Stevens by Huntley & Palmers Tin in the form of an oriental wooden chest with a Hindu god on the hinged lid and imitation ivory bands, cardboard container in which this box was originally sold calls it simply 'Ivory Box', the catalogues, on the other hand, refer to it as 'Wood and Ivory Box' it is also suggested that it 'can be used for cigarettes'. Another tin, also called 'Wood and Ivory Box, was made around the same time, only in its case the decorations are Islamic rather than, as here, Hindu; ‘Olden Times’ - 1893 by Huntley, Boorne & Stevens published by Huntley & Palmers, an elaborately shaped tin, decorated with historical scenes on hinged lid, including an Elizabethan game of bowls and a court jester, the ornate shape of this tin was clearly popular as it was used for four tin designs in 1893 and 1894; ‘Ancient Lock - 1896 by Huntley, Boorne & Stevens published by Huntley & Palmer, rectangular tin with slightly embossed lock, handle and metal framework on simulated timber background, simulated wood-effect on this tin was popular in domestic interiors during this period, many wooden door and panels, for example, were painted in brown and painstakingly feathered with lighter paints to recreate the wood grain, (4)
